Sandane - the heart of Nordfjord, Norway [PL|EN]

I am currently on a business trip in the Vestlandet region, working on adding successive segments to the body of the beast that Saint John wrote about (can anyone guess what I mean?). We have been accommodated in the village of Sandane, and this post is dedicated to it. This weekend, I spent my free time strolling around the village far and wide and reading up a bit about it.

Przebywam obecnie na delegacji w rejonie Vestlandet i zajmuję się dokładaniem kolejnych segmentów cielska bestii, o której pisał święty Jan (kto zgadnie, co mam na myśli?). Zakwaterowano nas w miejscowości Sandane i jej poświęcam poniższy post. Wolny czas w ten weekend przeznaczyłem na przespacerowanie się po tej wiosce wzdłuż i wszerz oraz poczytaniu trochę o niej.

Location: Sandane is situated in the heart of the Nordfjord region. The important E39 road, connecting the south and north of Norway, passes through here. The village is surrounded by steep mountains, and its centre stretches along the shore of a calm fjord and a fertile valley. It is the administrative centre of the municipality of Gloppen, located in the county (fylke) of Vestland. It lies in a picturesque setting at the very end of the Gloppefjorden, which is a branch of one of the longest and most beautiful Norwegian fjords – Nordfjord.

Położenie: Sandane jest zlokalizowane w sercu regionu Nordfjord. Przebiega tędy ważna droga E39, łącząca południe i północ Norwegii. Miejscowość otaczają strome góry, a jej centrum rozciąga się wzdłuż brzegu spokojnego fiordu i żyznej doliny. Jest to centrum administracyjne gminy Gloppen, położonej w województwie (fylke) Vestland. Leży malowniczo na samym końcu Gloppefjorden, który jest odnogą jednego z najdłuższych i najpiękniejszych norweskich fiordów – Nordfjordu.

Landscape: This is a place where majestic mountains meet the waters of the fjord. The valley in which Sandane lies is extraordinarily fertile, which means that agriculture, particularly dairy cattle farming and fruit growing (apple and plum trees), plays an important role here. The river Gloppenelva, known for its abundance of salmon, flows through the village.

Krajobraz: To miejsce, gdzie majestatyczne góry spotykają się z wodami fiordu. Dolina, w której leży Sandane, jest niezwykle urodzajna, co sprawia, że rolnictwo, zwłaszcza hodowla bydła mlecznego i sadownictwo (jabłonie, śliwy), odgrywa tu ważną rolę. Przez miejscowość przepływa rzeka Gloppenelva, znana z obfitości łososi.

The history of settlement in the Sandane area dates back thousands of years. This region was an important centre as far back as the Viking Age. Several interesting burial mounds can be found in the vicinity, testifying to its rich past. In Sandane itself, there is the burial mound of Karnilshaugen, although it does not look particularly impressive, as visually it is simply a small hillock on the outskirts of the village. Sandane has two museums in operation: Holvikejekta, with exhibits in the form of boats, and Nordfjord Folkemuseum, combined with an open-air museum.

Historia osadnictwa w rejonie Sandane sięga tysięcy lat wstecz. Region ten był ważnym ośrodkiem już w epoce Wikingów. W okolicy znajduje się kilka ciekawych kurhanów, które świadczą o bogatej przeszłości. W samym Sandane znajduje się kurhan Karnilshaugen, jednak nie wygląda on imponująco, gdyż wizualnie jest to po prostu niewielki pagórek na skraju miejscowości. W Sandane są czynne dwa muzea: Holvikejekta z eksponatami w postaci łodzi oraz Nordfjord Folkemuseum połączone ze skansenem.

The village of Sandane itself has a population of around 2,500. The entire municipality of Gloppen has approximately 5,900 inhabitants. Nearby, there is an airport for domestic flights and a ferry crossing northward to the small town of Nordfjordeid.

Sama miejscowość Sandane liczy około 2 500 mieszkańców. Cała gmina Gloppen ma około 5 900 mieszkańców. W pobliżu znajduje się lotnisko dla lotów krajowych oraz przeprawa promowa na północ do miasteczka Nordfjordeid.

In Sandane, you can stay at Gloppen Hotel, which is of a very high standard while offering relatively moderate prices (on a similar level to often inferior hotels). In winter, not much happens here, which is why some restaurants and shops have shorter opening hours or are only open on certain days of the week. It is worth eating at Sølvane Matbar (their food is essentially small works of art) or at the hotel restaurant (also of a high standard), although the prices at these establishments are quite steep. I would not, however, recommend the Mona Lisa "restaurant" – the food there is dreadful. There is a lack of anything in the middle – the choice is either two top-tier establishments or an absolute dive. There is also a burger bar, but I have not managed to try it yet. You can always, of course, get in the car and drive to Nordfjordeid or Stryn for dinner, where the dining options are more plentiful.

W Sandane można się zatrzymać w Gloppen Hotel, który jest na bardzo wysokim poziomie, a jednocześnie oferującym stosunkowo umiarkowane ceny (na podobnym poziomie, co często gorsze hotele). Zimą dzieje się tu niewiele, dlatego część lokali i sklepów jest otwarta krócej lub tylko w niektóre dni tygodnia. Warto zjeść w Sølvane Matbar (właściwie to ich jedzenie to małe dzieła sztuki) lub w hotelowej restauracji (również wysoki poziom), choć ceny w tych lokalach są dość wysokie. Nie polecam natomiast "restauracji" Mona Lisa, jedzenie tam jest fatalne. Brakuje czegoś pośrodku - do wyboru są albo dwa lokale z najwyższej półki, albo totalna speluna. Jest jeszcze bar z hamburgerami, ale nie zdążyłem go wypróbować. Zawsze można jednak wsiąść w auto i podjechać na obiad do Nordfjordeid albo Stryn, gdzie baza gastronomiczna jest większa.

What is there to do in Sandane? In winter, you can go to Loen and take the mountain gondola to the very top, where there is a restaurant with a view. From the summit, you can ski or toboggan down a specially prepared run. I will dedicate a separate post to Loen. In summer, you can go on mountain hikes or swim in the fjord. The Briksdalsbreen glacier is not far away. You can also go fishing in the river or the fjord.

Co można robić w Sandane? Zimą można pojechać do Loen i wjechać tam kolejką górską na sam szczyt, gdzie jest restauracja widokowa. Ze szczytu można zjechać na nartach albo sankach specjalnie przygotowaną trasą. Poświęcę Loen osobny post. Latem można udać się na wędrówki górskie albo pływać w fiordzie. Niedaleko znajduje się lodowiec Briksdalsbreen. Można też wędkować w rzece lub fiordzie.
