The Church of St. Mark was built on the site of an older church of the same name, built in 1835. That first church was more modest, with a simple appearance, but it had an important spiritual and cultural significance for the citizens of Belgrade. Unfortunately, during the bombing of Belgrade in 1941, the church was seriously damaged, which accelerated the decision to build a new, larger church.

The construction of the current church began in 1931, and the works lasted until the Second World War. It was designed by architects Petar and Branko Krstić, who were inspired by the architecture of the medieval Serbian church in Gračanica. The church was built in the Serbian-Byzantine style, with massive walls, domes and bell towers reaching a height of 62 meters.

The interior of the church was not completely completed, because the war destruction and subsequent political upheavals hindered the work. Nevertheless, the frescoes that have been installed are characterized by exceptional artistic quality. One can often see motifs inspired by frescoes from medieval monasteries, such as Studenica and Visoki Dečani.

One of the most significant historical aspects of St. Mark's Church is that it houses the tomb of Emperor Dušan the Strong, one of the most important Serbian rulers. His remains were transferred here from the Monastery of the Holy Archangels near Prizren, after the monastery was looted and destroyed several times over the centuries. The tomb of Emperor Dušan attracts a large number of visitors, both local and foreign, who come to pay their respects to the famous ruler.

In addition to Emperor Dušan, the church also houses the grave of Patriarch German, one of the most important Serbian church dignitaries of the 20th century. His role in the restoration of the Serbian Orthodox Church and its preservation during challenging times was of great importance.
