The spiritual fortress of the Serbian people
On the hill of Vračar, above the bustle of the city streets of Belgrade, rises the monumental Church of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world and a symbol of the spiritual strength of the Serbian people. Its dome dominates the panorama of the capital, and the white marble and granite shine under the sun as a testimony of centuries-old aspirations, suffering and faith.
The construction of the Church of Saint Sava traces its roots back to 1594, when the Ottoman authorities burned the relics of Saint Sava, the first archbishop of the autocephalous Serbian Orthodox Church. The place where the relics were burned was chosen for the erection of a temple as an eternal monument. Nevertheless, the fate of this sanctuary was stormy, and the construction took more than four centuries from idea to realization.
The first competition for construction was announced in 1905, but the Balkan wars, the First and Second World Wars, as well as political changes, constantly delayed the construction. Only in 1935 was the foundation stone laid, and in 1939 the first works began. The Second World War and the arrival of a new government stopped the construction, so that the works were renewed in 1985. The temple finally got its grand appearance at the beginning of the 21st century.
The Temple of St. Sava occupies an area of 3,500 m², and with its high domes it reaches a height of 79 meters, while the cross on top adds another 12 meters. The dome weighs about 4,000 tons and was raised to its height by special technology in 1989, which was an undertaking of world scale.
The interior of the Temple is decorated with a magnificent mosaic, one of the largest in the world, with more than 50 million pieces made in golden and colorful tones. The central part consists of a grandiose representation of Christ Pantokrator in a dome, with a face looking down on worshipers and visitors from above. The mosaic was made by artists from Russia and Serbia, using ancient techniques that give the interior light depth and spiritual sublimity.
The crypt of the Temple, located under the main space, is a true underground treasure of art and spirituality. Decorated with golden iconostasis, frescoes and reliefs, the crypt preserves the spirit of the past centuries and testifies to the perseverance of the people to preserve their heritage.
The Church of Saint Sava is not only a place of worship, but also a symbol of identity, faith and national pride. It stands as a silent, eternal watch over Belgrade, reminding all passers-by of the centuries-old struggle to preserve faith and tradition. Its walls and domes tell the story of a people who, despite all historical adversities, remained steadfast on their path.
