Our helpers for teaching respectful management of snakes | monomad challenge

This pet snakes are part of a team for teaching safe and respectful management to avoid snake bite and to manage it if it happens to people that are very exposed to them. This workshop was conducted for forest rangers in Mexico. First they practice with non-venomous ones such as pythons, boas, bullsnakes or kingsnakes.

Then we move on to venomous ones where they practice how to contain them in a controlled environment and once they do that easily we stage real life scenarios. This practice is made with Crotalus species which is the most abundant genus of venomous snakes in the region.

I enjoy greatly doing this workshops, people change the way they usually think and react on snakes so quickly after spending some time with them. This animals don’t deserve the reputation they have. We did them wrong, as a species, on so many levels. It’s our responsibility to reflect and care and this encounters show me that we can.

Once people make themselves available to learn about them, the fear melts away. Now these people who used to kill every snake on their way, take pictures of the snakes they find on their work and daily life and show them proudly to everyone. Imagine if every person that’s very exposed to them had this type of knowledge and experience…
