Hanabanilla - Phone Photography - #71 [ENG/ESP]

We're back on the blog quite quickly this week, as I had the photos ready and was just waiting for the chance to publish them. This will be a post for Phone Photography, in its 71st edition—thank you @untilwelearn for this magnificent weekly opportunity. The photographs featured today were taken in Hanabanilla, a hidden corner of Cuba. They've been edited in Lightroom and Snapseed, especially because they were captured from quite a distance due to the natural conditions of the place.

Gracias a @untilwelearn por esta magnífica oportunidad semanal. Las fotografías que hoy comparto fueron tomadas en Hanabanilla, un rincón de Cuba. Están editadas en Lightroom y Snapseed, sobre todo porque fueron capturadas desde muy lejos debido a las condiciones naturales del lugar.

Hanabanilla is located in Cuba, specifically in Villa Clara, and without a doubt it’s a magical and overwhelmingly green place. It’s surrounded by nature on all sides—mountains and water—and is steeped in ancient legends. The area is embraced by the Guamuhaya mountain range, a region known for its natural biodiversity, with unique plants and animals.

Hanabanilla se encuentra en Cuba, específicamente en Villa Clara, y sin dudas es un lugar muy mágico y sobre todo verde. Está lleno de naturaleza por todos lados—montañas y agua—y además se funde con leyendas muy antiguas. Está rodeado por el macizo montañoso de Guamuhaya, un lugar reconocido por su biodiversidad natural, con plantas y animales únicos.

The first thing you discover about the place is the origin of its name, which is both very interesting and quite beautiful. Hanabanilla means "little basket of gold" in the Cuban aboriginal language—I imagine the name alludes to its great natural wealth. One thing that surprised me is that the lake is artificial, created by humans in a setting that feels entirely shaped by nature. If I'm not mistaken, there used to be a river with the same name that was dammed, giving rise to the current lake, which flooded an ancient valley.

The waters are crystal-clear, but in the distance they appear a vibrant green due to the abundant vegetation—both beneath the surface and surrounding the area. Towering royal palms dominate the scene, especially around the edges; they are the national tree of the country.

There’s a nearby waterfall with a lovely name—Cascada del Amor—which offers a pleasant experience thanks to the microclimates that keep the temperature nearly stable all year round.

Rock formations are quite common in this area and appear in a variety of fascinating shapes. There are caverns and caves of all kinds—something very typical in Cuba due to the nature of its terrain, where limestone formations are prevalent.

She loved gazing at her reflection in the river’s waters, and that’s how the river came to bear her name. Later, the lake would carry it too. It stands as a symbol of the region’s beauty.
