found color in the market today

i went back to the market this morning without really planning it, just needed to get out of the apartment and walk around. you know how sometimes you're scrolling through your feed or watching streams and nothing hits the same, so you just have to go touch grass and remember what real life looks like.

the market was packed as always, that specific kind of chaos where everyone's moving in different directions but somehow it still flows. there's this energy there that's hard to explain if you haven't been. people calling out prices, vendors arranging their stuff, kids running between stalls, the smell of fruit and bread and wet concrete all mixed together.

i was just walking through, taking in the vibe, when i started really looking at how people had set things up. like, the way certain stalls had their colors organized without even trying to be fancy about it. oranges next to lemons next to avocados, and it's not some instagram aesthetic thing, it's just practical and it happens to look insane. the tarps overhead casting these soft shadows, the light coming through gaps in the fabric creating these little pockets of brightness.

that's when it hit me why i love spaces like this for sketching and just observing. there's real composition happening naturally. nobody's thinking about rule of thirds or color theory, but it's all there. the interplay between the chaotic movement and the structured moments, the way light breaks through the fabric canopies, how people's clothing creates accents in the frame.

i spent like an hour just sitting on a bench with my sketchbook, trying to capture some of it. didn't finish anything perfect, but that wasn't the point. sometimes you just need to be around actual people doing actual things, seeing how light and shadow and color exist when nobody's curating it for a camera. beats any reference image you could find online.

heading back there tomorrow probably. might grab a drink after if i run into someone i know.
