Up close with the turkey family

(Edited)

I recently had the opportunity to spot a family of turkey up close. Usually they keep a safe distance from me, but I was able to sneak up on them and get some pictures before they scurried away. In these pictures we can see what looks like a adult male and female, along with three babies. They are just going through the grass looking for something to eat, the adults just taking the babies for a walk.

The first picture I was able get focused and on the spot was of the female along with two babies in sight.

Seeing the young little birds run is always fun, they can really move.. and already fly at this point.

The mother is close behind.

She keeps looking back to make sure I am keeping my distance.

The two babies are not turning back, they are just running towards the closest woodline.

Eventually the babies get far enough away where they feel safe, and the mother and father stay close by keeping an eye on me.

It is really cool seeing both sexes next to each other. We can really see the difference in their plumage. The male has some blue colors to it, but the female is mostly just brownish grey.

They hang around for a bit, but eventually follow their babies into the forest.

I try to get closer, but I lose sight of them.. they are somewhere deep in that brush.

Well it was cool seeing them like that, up close is always really fun. This is the closest I have seen them. Doubt it gets much better than this for those wild birds.. they are not brave like the peacock is, more prone to running off when they see something..

maybe that is why they call them a bunch of turkeys.. lol

Very cool. We have a couple places near where I live that they are constantly crossing the street back and forth. You have to really slow your roll to make sure you don't hit them!

Around where I live now we see them a lot more that is for sure. I used to see them every so often but now I see them nearly every day.

That is cool. I was driving through a suburb just yesterday and I came across a big flock in someone's front yard. Totally threw me!

Never seen a wild turkey, I thought that they were all domesticated by now. Peacock is way more colorful.

I'm convinced it's a different species or different environment.

Turkeys in my country would do anything but run off😭😭😭

Very fearsome birds..

Although it is cool that you got to see them up close ✨

That is really cool! I've never seen a family together like that before, what a lucky find. Your property out there really has some nice wildlife! Is that peacock still hanging around?

Same here.
I would hear them a lot in the distance. Sounded bizarre in the distant forest area.

There is something special about seeing wild turkeys!

Around here, in the spring before all the crops grow tall a drive in the country can get you views of some of them at the edges of the fields where they meet the forest. I have never taken the time to get closer or photograph them but that looks like another fun part of living away from the city.

I know hunters immediately think of shooting them for thanks giving but I just love when the wild animals show themselves for a little while.

Yep that seems to be their favorite spot.. In fields right along the wood line.. So they can dart back into the woods for safety if needed.

During hunting season in about a month I expect them to disappear... lol they know.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen wild turkeys up close like that. The babies sound adorable when they’re running, I bet they look so funny zooming through the grass.

Hah yeah those babies look quite silly.. they are more round shaped when babies.. now they can fly so not as much running anymore.

It's cool. They seem notice that you are taking picture of them that's why they get a chance to skip and you didn't see them. 😆
