Assassin bug lurking among the cacti

While I was checking on all the upcoming new growth on the prickly pear cactus I spotted a bug hanging out on the surface of the pads of the cacti. It has a black shell and orange tips to its antenna.. They look like stink bugs, but bigger. I think its an Assassin bug, a predatory insect probably waiting for a potential meal to scurry by.

I am surprised it could get so deep within the spines without issue. It is pretty well protected in there from birds and such, hopefully it hunts something.. if anything is feeding on my cacti. I have not seen any signs of that but maybe the bug is onto something and knows about some critters I do not.

The flower buds of the Eastern Prickly Pear are really coming along. Hope they open in a week or so. Eventually I should have some cacti fruit to eat if they do well. I wonder what color the cactus fruit meat will be.. its usually a deep red color inside.

Even the paddles growing through the wiring in the baskets have flowers forming.

I started to count them all and got up close to 100.

Its good to see both paddles and flowers forming, I think they are quite happy in the newly refreshed baskets.

The Brittle Prickly pear are also growing, but no signs of flowers on them yet. But if they are anything like other opuntias they should also bloom eventually when ready.

The Mojave prickly pear are also producing new paddles, but no flowers on those either.

Well it was pretty cool seeing that bug hanging out within the cacti spines. Only seen it once, but I am sure it has been there longer than I have noticed.

Ah nice, I also remember seeing joshua trees and stuff like that when I visited NV.. no idea if you got them in NM but those are cool looking.

Good evening my brother, what you said is absolutely true, the insect must have lived there for a long time, and must have become very adept at entering the thorny cactus tree, because it is used to it.So it is very easy for him to live on the tree and is very safe from other animals, I see the cactus tree is very good and hopefully it will bear lots of fruit my friend ❤️🙏

Hey there. yeah it is pretty amazing to find so many cool bugs on all the plants. I always love going outside and looking for them.. they can hide well but if you look hard enough you usually find something.

Prickly pears remind me of my trips to Malta 🇲🇹. My in-laws came from there and I just love visiting that faraway place when I can. As a big rock in the sea south of Italy and north of Saudi Arabia, it is a neat place with zero native trees. So, they were all imported over the centuries.

A quick check tells me the actually are native to Malta and they are everywhere.

Thats really cool. I remember seeing cactus growing on the coast of the pacific ocean.. not expecting cacti to grow there but they sure do.

I used to know a man who ate the paddles from the prickly pear cactus. I am not sure how he prepared them, but I would think you could look up recipes. They grow wild down here, and as a kid, I ate many of the fruit. It is really good.
