Expedition Tenerife nr.3 - Day 4

avatar

Welcome to the fourth installment of the Tenerife Christmas Trip. Today's part is not exactly long in terms of distance, but more interesting for the landscape.

In the morning, I woke up around sunrise, so I didn't get to take photos before the sun was already above the horizon. Basically, from the place where we slept, I had only one composition option, and that was to use the intersection at the edge of the forest with a view of the nearby ridge. Because in all other directions I was shooting directly into the sun.

After breakfast and packing up the temporary camp in the pines. We set off on a journey that was supposed to lead uphill for almost the whole day. Fortunately, the beginning of the path led through a forest with massive Canary pines, so I stopped quite often and looked at what nature had created for giants.

_M4A1355.jpg

Canary pines form large clumps of needles to trap as much moisture as possible.

_M4A1357.jpg

After about 200 meters of elevation gain, I began to notice fallen leaves in the pine forest. The leaf looked familiar, but somehow I couldn't place it at the time. When we reached the edge of the forest, it was clear to me what it was all about. Edible chestnuts grew here on the black volcanic sand.

So we stopped for a while in the shade and started looking for fallen nuts. An even bigger surprise was that some of them were completely fried thanks to the black sand. So we enjoyed an energy-rich snack with a view of the coast.

_M4A1374.jpg

I was completely mesmerized by the contrast of the yellow trees growing on the black sand and the absolutely blue sky. That I didn't even mind the heat that prevailed here.

The trees slowly began to decrease and the volcanic material increased as we approached the Arafo Volcano. Which should have been one of the main goals of the day. The landscape was completely different from the previous days. And even the colleagues were blown away and I assumed that they would not like the whole day's climb.

_M4A1389.jpg

We also saw some volcanic bombs as these round stones are called. Because, for example, this one was thrown about 200 meters away from the eruption site and weighed over 20 kg.

On the way to the Mirador de la Crucita lookout, we also encountered several interesting igneous rocks from older eruptions.

_M4A1410.jpg

At the viewpoint, we looked at what we had actually conquered in the whole day. In 5.5 Km, we climbed over 1000 meters in height. And for the first time we looked at the western part of the island of the Orotava Valley.

_M4A1412.jpg

As we got off the saddle, the landscape changed every moment. First we walked on granite stones and looked at rocks that looked like castles.

_M4A1418.jpg

Next we would go through deep trenches in the clay bed. We descended the trenches into the nearest forest where we camped. In the whole day we walked a dizzying 7.3 km :)

Aby jsme pak zase šli hlubokými zákopy v jílovém podloží. Zákopy jsme sestoupali do nejbližšího lesa kde jsme se utábořili. Za celý den jsme ušli závratných 7.3km :)

Spectacular photos. I never hiked in Tenerife and I regret it because I had many opportunities to do it. I love my island.

I don't know if it's because of the translation but I read that you camped with a tent to sleep? Isn't it forbidden? I understand that in all of Spain.

@acont is a friend who just arrived in Tenerife.

Sleeping in a tent is prohibited in almost all of Europe. That's why we only travel with a sleeping bag, with which it is easier to hide. And I haven't had a problem in 20 years. It is important not to leave any traces behind.

That was one of the first things I looked at. If there are any poisonous animals on the island.
