Traveling to the exotic Galapagos Islands with a free ticket - The Ecuador diary ✈️ Viajando a las exóticas Islas Galápagos con boleto gratis - El diario de Ecuador

After five intense days in Quito, my trip continued to another region of Ecuador, one that I didn't want to miss for anything in the world when I planned my itinerary for this country: the legendary Galapagos Islands.

Después de cinco intensos días en Quito, mi viaje continuó hacia otra región de Ecuador, una que no quería perderme por nada del mundo cuando planifiqué mi itinerario por este país: las legendarias Islas Galápagos.

But there was one big problem: traveling to these islands is quite expensive. When I went to the airline's offices in Venezuela to buy my ticket to Ecuador, I asked how much it would cost to include that leg of the journey, and it was about $300. My budget was low, but my desire was great, so I thought to ask about the miles I had accumulated from previous trips. I didn't know how that worked, I had never used them before, but I mentioned it to the person who helped me, she checked on the computer and it turned out that these miles covered the ticket, meaning that the round-trip ticket from Quito to the Galapagos Islands was free. I couldn't believe it!

Pero había un gran detalle, ir a estas islas es bastante caro. Cuando fui a las oficinas de la aerolínea en Venezuela, para comprar mi boleto a Ecuador, consulté en cuánto me salía incluir ese tramo, y eran unos 300 dólares. Mi presupuesto era bajo, pero mi deseo grande, entonces se me ocurrió preguntar por las millas que tenía acumuladas de viajes anteriores. Yo no sabía cómo funcionaba eso, nunca las había usado, pero se lo mencioné a la persona que me atendió, ella revisó en la computadora y resultó que esas millas me cubrían el boleto, o sea, el pasaje ida y vuelta de Quito a las Islas Galápagos me salió gratis. ¡No lo podía creer!

My flight departed from Quito airport at 8:30 a.m. bound for Guayaquil, where we made a stopover, and then continued on to Seymour airport on Baltra Island, already in the Galapagos Islands. In total, the trip lasted about three and a half hours.

Mi vuelo salió del aeropuerto de Quito a las 8:30 de la mañana con destino a Guayaquil, donde hicimos una escala, y luego continuamos hacia el aeropuerto Seymour, en la isla Baltra, ya en las Islas Galápagos. En total el viaje duró unas tres horas y media.

Of course, I had requested a window seat; I wanted to see the landscape of this exotic place from above. The Galapagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 km off the coast of mainland Ecuador.

Por supuesto, había pedido un asiento con ventana; quería ver el paisaje de este lugar exótico desde arriba. Las Islas Galápagos se encuentran en el océano Pacífico, a unos 1000 km de la costa continental de Ecuador.

Fortunately, it was a clear day, and I was able to take several photos from the window as we were landing.

Afortunadamente, el día estaba despejado y pude tomar varias fotos desde la ventana mientras aterrizábamos.

The Galapagos Islands are of volcanic origin. The archipelago consists of 13 large islands, 6 small islands, and many islets. It has been a National Park since 1959, and in 1978 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site due to its unique characteristics, such as the endemic flora and fauna that exist there.

Las Islas Galápagos son de origen volcánico. El archipiélago está formado por 13 islas grandes, 6 pequeñas y muchos islotes. Desde 1959 es Parque Nacional y en 1978 la Unesco lo declaró Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad por sus características únicas, como la flora y fauna endémicas que allí existen.

These islands were visited in 1835 by the English scientist Charles Darwin, an experience that was key to his famous theory of biological evolution by natural selection. There he observed how, depending on the island, species adapted differently.

Estas islas fueron visitadas en 1835 por el científico inglés Charles Darwin, una experiencia que fue clave para su famosa teoría de la evolución biológica por selección natural. Allí observó cómo, dependiendo de la isla, las especies se adaptaban de manera diferente.

Being in natural settings is what I seek most when I travel, so my excitement upon arriving in the Galapagos Islands was unmatched. We got off the plane and after collecting our luggage, we had to go through the ticket office.

Estar en entornos naturales es lo que más busco cuando viajo, por lo que mi emoción al llegar a las Islas Galápagos fue incomparable. Bajamos del avión y después de recoger el equipaje, había que pasar por taquilla.

Although the ticket to get here had been free for me, the entrance fee was not. At the airport in Quito, I had paid $10 for the Transit Control Card, and at this airport, I had to pay the entrance fee to the Galapagos National Park. As a citizen of Venezuela (Andean Community Mercosur), I had to pay $50, while other nationalities paid $100.

Aunque el boleto para llegar aquí me había salido gratis, la entrada no lo era. En el aeropuerto de Quito había pagado $10 por la Tarjeta de Control de Tránsito y en este aeropuerto había que pagar la tasa de entrada al Parque Nacional Galápagos. Por ser de Venezuela (Comunidad Andina Mercosur), me tocaba pagar 50 dólares, otras nacionalidades pagaban $100.

This amount could only be paid in cash, so I took out a $100 bill. I had bought this bill from a friend's aunt a few months before traveling to Ecuador. I handed it to the girl at the ticket office and she started checking it, feeling it, running it through a detector, and guess what? It was fake! She rubbed it against a surface and it broke. I was stunned, I didn't know if it was a crime to have counterfeit money. She told me that if I didn't have cash at that moment, they would hold my passport until I paid. Luckily, I had another bill and was able to get out of this incident unscathed. By the way, I kept the bill as a souvenir of this anecdote 😂.

Este monto sólo se podía pagar en efectivo, así que saqué un billete de $100. Este billete se lo había comprado a la tía de una amiga unos meses antes de viajar a Ecuador. Se lo entregué a la chica de la taquilla y ella empezó a revisarlo, a palparlo, lo pasó por un detector, y ¿adivinen qué? ¡Era falso! Lo frotó contra una superficie y se rompió. Me quedé atónita, no sabía si era delito tener dinero falso. Me dijo que si no tenía efectivo en ese momento, me retendrían el pasaporte hasta que pagara. Menos mal que tenía otro billete y pude salir airosa de este incidente. Por cierto, guardé el billete como recuerdo de esta anécdota 😂.

Now I could continue. From Baltra Island airport, you have to take a bus that takes you to the port in a few minutes, and there you take a ferry that also takes you to Santa Cruz Island in a few minutes, which is the most populated island and has the most services.

Ahora sí podía continuar. Desde el aeropuerto de la isla Baltra había que tomar un autobús que en unos minutos te deja en el puerto, y allí se toma un ferry que también en pocos minutos te lleva a la isla Santa Cruz, que es la más poblada y la que cuenta con más servicios.

Once on Santa Cruz Island, I took the bus to Puerto Ayora, which is 42 km away and is where most of the hotels and other tourist services are located.

Una vez en la isla Santa Cruz, tomé el autobús a Puerto Ayora, que está a 42 km y es donde se encuentran la mayoría de los hoteles y demás servicios turísticos.

When I arrived in Puerto Ayora, it was already around 3:00 in the afternoon. I hadn't booked a hotel, so I started looking for one that fit my budget. I walked around, asked here and there, and a tourist promoter recommended the Hotel España. He accompanied me there, and it seemed like a good option at $28 a night, so I stayed there for the seven days I was in the Galapagos Islands.

Cuando llegué a Puerto Ayora ya eran como las 3:00 de la tarde. Yo no había reservado hotel, así que me puse a buscar uno acorde a mi bolsillo. Caminé, pregunté por aquí y por allá, y un promotor turístico me recomendó el Hotel España. Me acompañó hasta allá y me pareció una buena opción por $28 la noche, así que me alojé allí durante los siete días que estuve en las Islas Galápagos.

I left my things in the room and immediately went out to explore for the rest of the afternoon. I had to make the most of every minute here! As soon as I reached the coast, I saw the first animals. These colorful crabs are known as zapayas, and you can see them everywhere.

Dejé mis cosas en la habitación e inmediatamente salí a explorar durante el resto de la tarde. ¡Tenía que aprovechar cada minuto aquí! Apenas me asomé a la costa, vi los primeros animales. Estos cangrejos tan coloridos se conocen como zapayas, y los puedes ver por todas partes.

I kept walking and came to a fish market. There were several birds gathered there, such as pelicans and another that I had only seen in documentaries and books: the blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii).

Seguí caminando y llegué a un mercado de pescado. Allí estaban concentradas varias aves, como pelícanos y otra que sólo había visto en documentales y libros: el piquero o alcatraz patiazul (Sula nebouxii).

How beautiful! It was waiting there to eat what the fishermen discarded, and it was taking little steps as if dancing. I love animals, and seeing them up close and free like this fascinates me ❤️.

¡Qué precioso! Estaba allí esperando comer lo que los pescadores descartaban, y daba pasitos como bailando. Amo a los animales, y verlos así tan de cerca y libres me fascina ❤️.

I had read that the animals on the Galapagos Islands were not afraid of people, and I was beginning to see that this was true. The following days would bring me many surprises...

Había leído que los animales de las Islas Galápagos no le tenían miedo a la gente, y estaba empezando a ver que era verdad. Los días siguientes me traerían muchas sorpresas...

I stayed for a while watching the fishermen feed these birds, and then I went to another place, a very special one, which I will show you in my next post.

Me quedé un rato observando cómo los pescadores alimentaban a estas aves y luego me fui a otro lugar, uno muy especial, que les mostraré en mi próxima publicación.
