One of the places you can't miss if you want to learn more about a country's culture is its traditional markets, which have been around for years or even centuries and where you can see a display of the knowledge and flavors of the local population.

Uno de los lugares que no se pueden perder si quieren conocer mejor la cultura de un país son sus mercados tradicionales, esos que tienen años e incluso siglos existiendo y donde puedes ver un despliegue de los saberes y sabores de la población local.

It was Saturday and my second day in Ecuador, and since I had seen in my travel guide that on Saturdays there was a large indigenous market in a town near Quito, I had made a note to go. I asked Vero, the Argentine girl I met at the hostel, if she wanted to come with me, and early in the morning we went to the bus terminal.

Era sábado y mi segundo día en Ecuador, y como había visto en mi guía de viajes que los sábados se montaba un gran mercado indígena en un pueblo cercano a Quito, lo había anotado para ir. Le dije a Vero, la chica argentina que conocí en el hostal, si quería venir conmigo, y bien temprano en la mañana nos fuimos hasta el terminal de autobuses.

The destination was Otavalo, about 100 km from Quito, and the ticket, if I remember correctly, cost $2.50. There was a bit of a line to get on the bus, most of us were tourists, but we didn't wait long to board. I love traveling by road and looking out the window, and even though the sky was cloudy, I enjoyed the scenery.

El destino era Otavalo, a unos 100 Km de Quito, y el pasaje, si mal no recuerdo, costó $2,50. Había algo de cola para tomar el autobús, la mayoría éramos turistas, pero no esperamos mucho para montarnos. Me encanta viajar por carretera viendo por la ventana, y aunque el cielo estaba nublado, disfruté del paisaje.

In about two hours, we arrived in Otavalo, in the province of Imbabura. The bus dropped us off quite close to the market, so we walked a few blocks and arrived.

Más o menos en dos horas llegamos a Otavalo, en la provincia de Imbabura. El autobús nos dejó bastante cerca de donde se instala el mercado, así que caminamos unas cuadras y llegamos.

This indigenous market, one of the largest in Latin America, has its center in the Plaza de los Ponchos. We began to explore it in no particular order, simply letting ourselves be drawn to whatever caught our attention, which in my case was almost everything 😄, there was so much to see!

Este mercado indígena, uno de los más grandes de Latinoamérica, tiene su núcleo en la Plaza de los Ponchos. Empezamos a recorrerlo sin ningún orden específico, simplemente dejándonos llevar por lo que nos llamaba la atención, que en mi caso era casi todo 😄, ¡había tantas cosas para ver!

The stalls stretch along the streets and occupy a large part of downtown Otavalo. As you can see in the photos I'm sharing, the variety of items that can be found is very large, from traditional handicrafts to, let's say, things that have been modernized.

Los puestos se extienden a lo largo de las calles y ocupan gran parte del centro de Otavalo. Como pueden ver en las fotos que comparto, la variedad de artículos que se pueden encontrar es muy grande, desde artesanía tradicional hasta cosas, digamos, modernizadas.

The colorful textiles and traditional clothing worn by the people of this town are some of the most notable items here: pants, skirts, embroidered blouses, wool ponchos, espadrilles, hats, belts, among others.

Los textiles coloridos y la ropa típica que usa la gente de este pueblo son algunas de las piezas que más destacan aquí: pantalones, faldas, blusas bordadas, ponchos de lana, alpargatas, sombreros, correas, entre otras.

Of course, food is also mixed with crafts. On every corner there are vendors selling drinks, fruit, sweets, and other things unknown to us foreigners.

Por supuesto, la comida también se mezcla con la artesanía. En cualquier esquina hay vendedores de bebidas, frutas, dulces y otras cosas desconocidas para los que somos extranjeros.

And speaking of food, we leave the crafts behind for a while and arrive at a market selling fruit, vegetables, and many other things, a more everyday part of Otavalo, where you can see what the townspeople consume.

Y hablando de alimentos, nos alejamos un rato de las artesanías y llegamos a un mercado de frutas, legumbres y muchas otras cosas, una parte más cotidiana de Otavalo, donde se puede ver lo que consumen los habitantes del pueblo.

I was fascinated watching everything they sold and how they sold it, and of course, asking a lot of questions because there were so many things I couldn't identify.

Yo estaba fascinada viendo todo lo que vendían y cómo lo vendían, y claro, preguntando mucho porque había tantas cosas que no podía identificar.

Among the staple crops of this region of Ecuador are corn, beans, and avocados. But there is also a variety of fruits, vegetables, spices, and more.

Entre los cultivos básicos de esta región de Ecuador están el maíz, los frijoles y los aguacates. Pero también hay una gran variedad de frutas, vegetales, especias y mucho más.

Then I read that, thanks to their handicrafts and everything else they produce and sell at the market, the people of Otavalo are the wealthiest indigenous in the country. I don't doubt it, they dress and eat very well.

Luego leí que gracias a sus artesanías y todo lo demás que producen y venden en el mercado, los otavaleños son los indígenas más ricos del país. No lo dudo, se visten y comen muy bien.

And in such a changing world, they have preserved their culture, their way of life. I think that is very valuable.

Y en un mundo tan cambiante, han conservado su cultura, su forma de vida. Creo que eso es muy valioso.

We had already walked through almost the entire market, seen the items and prices, and now it was time to decide what we wanted to buy. It was not an easy matter, I liked many things, both for myself and as gifts for family and friends, but my budget was limited.

Ya habíamos recorrido casi todo el mercado, visto los artículos y los precios, y ahora tocaba decidir qué queríamos comprar. No era un asunto fácil, me habían gustado muchas cosas, tanto para mí como para regalar a la familia y amigos, pero mi presupuesto era limitado.

Look at these beauties, the little llama and alpaca figures were made from natural wool, so incredibly soft. And the rugs, baskets, etc., with very attractive ethnic designs.

Miren estas bellezas, las pequeñas figuras de llamas y alpacas estaban hechas con lana natural, tan increíblemente suave. Y las alfombras, cestas, etc., con diseños étnicos muy atractivos.

As it was almost 2:00 p.m. and we were very hungry, we went to eat before finalizing our purchases. In one part of the market, there are many stalls offering local cuisine options.

Como ya eran casi las 2:00 de la tarde y teníamos mucha hambre, antes de concretar nuestras compras, nos fuimos a comer. En una parte del mercado están concentrados muchos puestos que ofrecen opciones de la gastronomía local.

We sat down to eat at one of these stalls, the prices were really cheap. I ordered a plate of fried fish with rice, yuca (cassava), and salad, which cost me less than $4.

En uno de esos puestos nos sentamos a comer, los precios eran realmente baratos. Yo pedí un plato de pescado frito acompañado con arroz, yuca y ensalada, que me costó menos de 4 dólares.

And now, in “full stomach, happy heart” mode, we went shopping for a few things 😄.

Y ahora sí, en modo "estómago lleno, corazón contento”, nos fuimos a comprar algunas cosas 😄.

I bought some woven hats, one for myself and another to give to my sister, a small colorful tablecloth with a typical local design, a hammock, key chains, and other small gifts for friends. For my mom, I bought a woven bag, which in the Kichwa language is called a shigra and is the traditional Ecuadorian bag.

Me llevé unos sombreros tejidos, uno para mí y otro para regalar a mi hermana, un pequeño mantel colorido con diseño típico del lugar, una hamaca, llaveros y otras cosas pequeñas para regalar a amigos. Para mi mamá compré una cartera tejida, que en lengua kichwa le dicen shigra y es el bolso tradicional ecuatoriano.

The shigras are made from cabuya leaves (a type of agave) and dyed with natural dyes. The artisan was finishing them right there, attaching the handles.

Las shigras están hechas con hojas de cabuya (un tipo de agave) y teñidas con tintes naturales. El artesano las estaba terminando allí mismo, colocándoles las asas.

There was one thing I really liked but couldn't afford to buy: the gualca. Gualcas are traditional necklaces from Otavalo made from small blown glass beads plated in gold of varying carats. I asked the price of one and it cost over $200, not suitable for my backpacker budget...

Hubo una cosa que me gustó mucho pero no pude comprar: la gualca. Las gualcas son unos collares típicos de Otavalo que están hechos de pequeñas cuentas de vidrio soplado y bañadas en oro de diferentes quilates. Pregunté el precio de uno y costaba más de $200, no apto para mi presupuesto de mochilera...

Then we walked through other streets in the town, which is very pretty, by the way, we saw more handicrafts, but in shops, and when we came across a display case with chocolates, we felt like eating dessert.

Luego caminamos por otras calles del pueblo, que por cierto es muy bonito, vimos más artesanías, pero en tiendas, y al encontrarnos una vitrina con chocolates, nos provocó comer postre.

It was already past 5:00 pm, a good time to leave and not return to Quito so late, but exploring a bit more, we arrived at a plaza, Simón Bolívar Park. After a light drizzle, we sat there for a while to organize the things we had bought. They were in bags, and we put them in our backpacks.

Ya eran más de las 5:00 pm, una buena hora para irnos y no regresar a Quito tan tarde, pero explorando un poco más llegamos a una plaza, el Parque Simón Bolívar. Tras una ligera llovizna, nos sentamos allí un rato para organizar las cosas que habíamos comprado. Estaban en bolsas, y las metimos en nuestras mochilas.

One curious thing is that although this plaza is named after Simón Bolívar, there isn't a statue of him there. Instead, there's a statue of Rumiñahui, an indigenous leader who resisted the Spanish conquest.

Algo curioso es que, aunque esta plaza se llama Simón Bolívar, no hay una estatua de él allí. La que está es la de Rumiñahui, líder indígena que resistió la conquista española.

And so we said goodbye to the magnificent indigenous market of Otavalo. If you go to Ecuador, don't miss it, I'm sure you'll enjoy this experience.
