The stones of the Orinoco River [ENG-ESP]

Water constantly circulates through them, in the rainy season it can cover some of them completely and when the drought arrives it uncovers them to a certain point and on their surfaces you can see the marks of the different levels reached by the vital liquid. This action of nature surely happens in many countries of the world, but not everywhere you can see formations as old as the stones of the Orinoco River. They have existed for millions of years and are part of the Amazonian Granitic Complex of the Guiana Shield, one of the oldest regions on earth.

El agua circula constantemente por ellas, en época de lluvias puede llegar a cubrir a algunas por completo y cuando llega la sequía las descubre hasta cierto punto y sobre sus superficies se pueden ver las marcas de los distintos niveles que alcanza el vital líquido. Esta acción de la naturaleza seguramente sucede en muchos países del mundo, pero no en cualquier parte puedes ver formaciones tan antiguas como las piedras del río Orinoco. Existen desde hace millones de años y son parte del Complejo Granítico Amazónico del Escudo Guayanés, una de las regiones más viejas de la tierra.

With a length of 2,140 Km, the mighty Orinoco River is the largest in Venezuela and the third in South America. Its basin has an area of 989,000 square kilometers, the truth is unimaginable how huge it is, when consulting a map you can see that it passes through seven states of Venezuela and two of Colombia.

Con una longitud de 2.140 Km, el imponente río Orinoco es el más grande de Venezuela y el tercero de Suramérica. Su cuenca tiene una superficie de 989.000 Km cuadrados, la verdad es inimaginable lo enorme que es, al consultar un mapa se puede ver que pasa por siete estados de Venezuela y dos de Colombia.

The times I have sailed its waters through the states of Apure, Amazonas and Bolivar I've been impressed by the stones I have seen in many of the stretches through which I passed and in this publication I show you some shots I took of them in the different trips. Most of them are rounded, with curves, there are also some with coarser figures. Their colors also stand out, sepia tones, black, some opaque and others shiny, all of them impressive in my opinion.

Las veces que he navegado sus aguas por los estados Apure, Amazonas y Bolívar me han impresionado las piedras que he visto en muchos de los tramos por los que pasé y en esta publicación les muestro algunas tomas que hice de ellas en los distintos viajes. La mayoría son de forma redondeada, con curvas, hay también unas con figuras más toscas. Destacan asimismo sus colores, tonos sepia, negro, algunas opacas y otras brillantes, todas a mi parecer impactantes.

By Apure state / Por el estado Apure

I went to this remote place for work, to get there you take a boat in Puerto Paez, a town in the south of Apure state, on the border with Colombia. As soon as you start the trip to Santa María del Orinoco, which is between Apure and Bolívar, the rocks appear on each side.

Fui a parar a este remoto lugar por trabajo, para llegar hasta allí se toma una lancha en Puerto Páez, un pueblo que queda en el sur del estado Apure, en la frontera con Colombia. Apenas comienza el viaje hacia Santa María del Orinoco, que queda entre Apure y Bolívar, van apareciendo las piedras a cada lado.

The boats go at a high speed and therefore sometimes it's not easy to focus and keep the camera steady.

Las lanchas van a una alta velocidad y por eso a veces no es fácil enfocar ni mantener estable la cámara.

In addition, there is almost always a lot of humidity and the lens can fog up easily.

Además casi siempre hay muchísima humedad y se te puede empañar el lente fácilmente.

The mighty Orinoco River is almost completely navigable, and boats of all kinds can be seen here. Since colonial times it became an important trade route to the main ports of the world, all kinds of goods were imported and exported through its waters.

El caudaloso río Orinoco es navegable casi por completo, por aquí se pueden ver embarcaciones de todo tipo. Desde la época colonial se convirtió en una importante vía comercial hacia los principales puertos del mundo, todo tipo de mercancías se importaban y exportaban pasando por sus aguas.

In addition to its particular scenic beauty, in its waters and surroundings lives a great diversity of flora and fauna, thousands of species of plants and animals make up its richness, giving this river an important role for the environmental balance. On the other hand, as it possesses mineral resources and highly coveted raw materials such as iron, bauxite, oil, gas, gold, diamonds, kaolin, rubber, wood, among many others, pollution and deforestation are the main threats it faces. At least so far the Orinoco stones are not in danger.

Además de su particular belleza paisajística, en sus aguas y alrededores vive una gran diversidad de flora y fauna, miles de especies de plantas y animales conforman su riqueza dándole a este río un importante papel para el equilibrio ambiental. Por otro lado al poseer recursos minerales y materias primas muy codiciadas como hierro, bauxita, petróleo, gas, oro, diamantes, caolín, caucho, maderas, entre muchos otros, la contaminación y la deforestación son las principales amenazas que enfrenta. Por lo menos hasta ahora las piedras del Orinoco no corren peligro.

Between many of these rock formations are stretches of fine sand, beaches where some people bathe.

Entre muchas de estas formaciones rocosas hay extensiones de fina arena, playas en las que algunas personas se bañan.

When we returned from Santa María del Orinoco to Puerto Páez, the boat passed closer to the stones and I was able to photograph them better, millions of years of nature's work to create this, aren't they incredible?

Cuando regresamos de Santa María del Orinoco a Puerto Páez, la lancha pasó más cerca de las piedras y pude fotografiarlas mejor, millones de años de trabajo de la naturaleza para crear esto, ¿no son increíbles?

To get by land to Amazonas state, in the south of Venezuela, when you come from the center-north of the country, you must cross the Orinoco River in barges, although the trip from one piece of land to another is short, about 15 minutes, again the gaze is diverted to the stones, there is practically no land on the banks on one side and the other, all the ground is rocky.

Para llegar por tierra al estado Amazonas, al sur de Venezuela, cuando vienes del centro-norte del país, debes cruzar el río Orinoco en chalanas, aunque el viaje de un pedazo de tierra a otra es corto, de unos 15 minutos, nuevamente la mirada se desvía hacia las piedras, prácticamente no hay tierra en las orillas de un lado y otro, todo el suelo es rocoso.

When you walk through Puerto Ayacucho, the capital of this state, you find the river in a nice boardwalk and if you take a boat there you cross it and arrive at the town of Casuarito, Colombia, which is in front. The huge rocks bid you farewell on one side and welcome you on the other.

Cuando paseas por Puerto Ayacucho, la capital de este estado, te encuentras con el río en un agradable malecón y si tomas una embarcación allí lo cruzas y llegas al pueblo de Casuarito, Colombia, que queda en frente. Las enormes rocas te despiden de un lado y te reciben en el otro.

On these sides we also did a tour from the port of Morganito to bathe in some beaches that the Orinoco River has there and I captured more stones, here they looked a little different because they contrasted with the green of the vegetation.

Por estos lados hicimos también un paseo saliendo desde el puerto de Morganito para bañarnos en algunas playas que tiene el río Orinoco por allí y capté más piedras, aquí se veían un poco diferentes porque contrastaban con el verdor de la vegetación.

It's interesting to see the relationship of the people with this river, something that has existed for hundreds of years, since in this region there are many indigenous populations that preserve their customs and are maintained with the resources provided by the Orinoco, the main activity that is seen is fishing for example.

Es interesante ver la relación de las personas con este río, algo que existe desde hace cientos de años, ya que en esta región hay muchas poblaciones indígenas que conservan sus costumbres y se mantienen con los recursos que provee el Orinoco, la principal actividad que se ve es la pesca por ejemplo.

I end with a photo of a more urban section of the Orinoco, in Ciudad Bolivar, Bolivar state, there is the narrowest part of the river (1,678 meters) and that was used in the '60s (twentieth century) to build a bridge over it, known as Angostura, which is seen in the background.

Finalizo con una foto de una sección más urbana del Orinoco, en Ciudad Bolívar, estado Bolívar, allí está la parte más angosta que tiene el río (1.678 metros) y que se aprovechó en los años '60 (siglo XX) para construir sobre él un puente, conocido como Angostura, que se ve al fondo.

As you can see, the stones are still protagonists in these banks and beyond, on the far right of the image you can see the Middle Stone, also known as the Orinocometer, because thanks to it the people of the city can be aware of the ups and downs of the water level that can affect them.

Como pueden observar, las piedras siguen siendo protagonistas en estas orillas y más allá, en el extremo derecho de la imagen se ve la Piedra del Medio, también conocida como el Orinocómetro, porque gracias a ella la gente puede estar atenta de las subidas y bajadas del nivel del agua que puede llegar a afectarlos.
