The mountain that looks at us / La montaña que nos mira

Yesterday I was running some errands in the east of Caracas, I hadn't been there for a while. When leaving the subway my eyes were looking for one thing, if there is something that stands out in this area is the view towards the emblematic mountain of the Venezuelan capital: Avila or Waraira Repano.

Besides, the morning was sunny, the sky was blue, and the urban landscape combined with that natural background has always seemed fabulous to me. I walked in the direction of Los Palos Grandes, and as I advanced along its avenues and transversals, I looked at the mountain, or it looked at me, walking there at its feet.

Behind it is the sea, can you believe it? A few years ago I climbed to its highest point, Pico Naiguatá (2,765 meters) and I had that spectacle before me: on one side the city, on the other the Caribbean Sea.

It's been a while since I climbed it, there are hundreds of hiking trails in this National Park that is the lung of this great city, I think it's about time to see us up close again...

Ayer estuve haciendo algunas diligencias por el este de Caracas, tenía tiempo sin pasar por allí. Al salir del metro mis ojos buscaron una sola cosa, si hay algo que destaca de esta zona es la vista hacia la montaña emblemática de la capital venezolana: el Ávila o Waraira Repano.

Además la mañana estaba soleada, el cielo azul, y el paisaje urbano combinado con ese fondo natural, siempre me ha parecido fabuloso. Caminé en dirección a Los Palos Grandes, y mientras avanzaba por sus avenidas y transversales, miraba la montaña, o ella me miraba a mí, caminando allí a sus pies.

Detrás de ella está el mar, ¿pueden creerlo? Hace unos años subí hasta su punto más alto, el Pico Naiguatá (2.765 metros) y tuve ese espectáculo ante mí: por un lado la ciudad, por el otro el mar Caribe.

Hace tiempo que no la subo, hay cientos de rutas de senderismo en este Parque Nacional que es el pulmón de esta gran ciudad, creo que ya va siendo hora de volver a vernos de cerca…
