The first time I bet on a horse race 🐎 🐎 La primera vez que aposté en una carrera de caballos

Being on the track, reviewing the list of participants, choosing the horse, spending some money and waiting for the race, hoping to be lucky enough to win, is something I have never experienced before.

Estar en la pista, revisar la lista de participantes, elegir el caballo, gastar algo de dinero y esperar la carrera ligando tener la suerte de ganar, es algo que nunca había experimentado.

In Venezuela the racecourse is very popular, there are many people who like this equestrian activity for betting and prefer it over the lottery, but I never paid attention to it. I remember that when I was a child, on Sundays they used to show the horse races on television and in the kiosks they sold the equestrian magazine "5 y 6", but to me it all seemed boring.

En Venezuela el hipódromo es muy popular, hay mucha gente que le gusta esta actividad ecuestre para apostar y la prefiere sobre la lotería, pero yo nunca le presté atención. Recuerdo que cuando era niña, los domingos pasaban las carreras de caballos por televisión y en los quioscos vendían la revista hípica "5 y 6", pero a mí todo eso me parecía aburrido.

It was as an adult that I visited a racecourse for the first time, the one in La Rinconada in Caracas, and it was not to watch horse races but to attend a concert of the Argentinean band Soda Stereo 😉. But the first time I bet was a few years later, at the Palermo racecourse in Buenos Aires, while I was in the Argentine capital doing a course.

Fue ya de adulta que visité un hipódromo por primera vez, el de La Rinconada en Caracas, y no fue para ver carreras de caballos sino para asistir a un concierto de la banda argentina Soda Stereo 😉. Pero la primera vez que aposté fue unos años después, en el hipódromo de Palermo, en Buenos Aires, mientras me encontraba en la capital argentina haciendo un curso.

Everything happened by chance, it was a weekend and I had gone out for a walk around the city with some classmates, we went to the Palermo area, we found out that there was a special race because it was being promoted in the surrounding area and we decided to enter the racecourse to try our luck.

Todo se dio por casualidad, era fin de semana y había salido a pasear por la ciudad con algunos compañeros del curso, fuimos a la zona de Palermo, nos enteramos de que había una carrera especial porque la estaban promocionando en los alrededores y decidimos entrar al hipódromo a probar suerte.

The Argentine Palermo Racecourse, as it is officially called, is an imposing site, inaugurated on May 7, 1876, is the largest in this country.

El Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo, como es su nombre oficial, es un recinto imponente, inaugurado el 7 de mayo de 1876, es el más grande de este país.

When we entered we were given a brochure containing information about the event and of course the horses participating in the races.

Cuando ingresamos nos dieron un folleto con información sobre el evento, y por supuesto sobre los caballos que participaban en las carreras.

As I recall, none of us had any experience betting on horse racing, but if we had, we didn't know the horses anyway, so it didn't matter 😄.

Si mal no recuerdo, ninguno de nosotros tenía experiencia apostando en carreras de caballos, pero si la hubiésemos tenido, de todos modos no conocíamos a los caballos, entonces daba lo mismo 😄.

We looked at the brochure and each one of us chose the one we liked and then went to the ticket office to bet on one of the races, that of the Grand Prix. It's a pity that among the things I keep from that trip, I didn't get the paper of that bet, and I don't remember the name of the horse I chose.

Miramos en el folleto los nombres y cada quien escogió el que le gustaba para luego ir a la taquilla a apostar en una de las carreras, la del Gran Premio. Es una lástima que entre las cosas que conservo de ese viaje, no conseguí el papel de esa apuesta, y no recuerdo el nombre del caballo que elegí.

But I do remember the name of the horse that a couple of my classmates bet on, his name was Secretario (Secretary), isn't that funny? That must be why I didn't forget it 😄.

Pero sí recuerdo el nombre del caballo por el que apostaron un par de compañeras, se llamaba Secretario, ¿no es gracioso? Debe ser por eso que no se me olvidó 😄.

Our turn came and I must admit that watching a race like this live and direct is very exciting, especially because you have bet and you want to win 😉, there I understood why the racecourse captivates so many people.

Llegó nuestro turno y debo reconocer que ver una carrera así en vivo y directo es muy emocionante, sobre todo porque has apostado y quieres ganar 😉, ahí entendí por qué el hipódromo cautiva a tanta gente.

We jumped and screamed in support of our horses, between the narration of the racecourse and all the rowdy crowd, the noise was impressive. Unfortunately I didn't win, but my companions who bet on Secretario did, how lucky they were! Of course, they regretted not having put more money on him, I don't remember what position he came in, but when they collected the prize it was a sum with which they could eat out for a couple of days, not bad at all...

Brincamos y gritamos apoyando a nuestros caballos, entre la narración del hipódromo y todo el público alborotado, el bullicio era impresionante. Lamentablemente no gané, pero mis compañeras que apostaron por Secretario sí, ¡qué suertudas! Por supuesto se lamentaron por no haberle puesto más dinero, no recuerdo en qué posición llegó, pero cuando cobraron el premio era una suma con la que podían comer afuera un par de días, nada mal...

After the races with bets, other horses came out to the track with their jockeys dressed very elegantly, this was a day of national commemoration in Argentina for a historical date, and of course, we stayed a while longer to see this parade.

Después de las carreras con apuestas, salieron a la pista otros caballos con sus jinetes vestidos muy elegantemente, este era un día de conmemoración nacional en Argentina por una fecha histórica, y claro, nos quedamos un rato más para ver este desfile.

And so ended this improvised adventure at the racecourse, where I didn't win but I had fun and experienced something new, and that counts too! Since then I have not gone to a track or bet on horse races, and you, have you had this experience? Leave me your comments!
