Sunday of historical and cultural walk, El Calvario - Venezuela 🚶🍃 Domingo de caminata histórica y cultural, El Calvario - Venezuela

There are places close to us, but for some reason, we haven't had the chance to visit them yet. When I heard there was a historical and cultural walk in the city this Sunday, which included an old bridge I'd been wanting to see for a while, I jumped at the chance.

Hay lugares que tenemos cerca, pero por alguna razón, aún no hemos tenido la oportunidad de visitarlos. Cuando me enteré que este domingo habría una caminata histórica y cultural en la ciudad, que incluía un antiguo puente que hace tiempo quería conocer, no dudé en asistir.

The meeting point for the 3rd Come to El Calvario Walk in La Victoria, Aragua (Venezuela) was at 7:00 a.m. in Plaza Bolívar. From there, the route would cover approximately 4 km until reaching the community of El Calvario, located in a mountainous area.

El punto de encuentro para la 3era Caminata Ven a El Calvario, en La Victoria, Aragua (Venezuela), fue a las 7:00 de la mañana en la Plaza Bolívar. Desde allí, la ruta recorrería unos 4 Km hasta llegar a la comunidad de El Calvario, ubicada en una zona montañosa.

As is my custom, I arrived on time, knowing we would probably start around 7:30 a.m. My sister, more relaxed, arrived a little later. Meanwhile, I amused myself by taking some photos around Plaza Bolívar, which, although familiar, can always offer different angles.

Como de costumbre, llegué puntual, sabiendo que probablemente saldríamos como a las 7:30 am. Mi hermana, más relajada, llegó un rato después. Mientras tanto me entretuve tomando algunas fotos en la Plaza Bolívar, que aunque la conozco, siempre puede ofrecer ángulos diferentes.

The plaza was the first stop on this historical and cultural route. Aside from the space that pays tribute to the Liberator Simón Bolívar with a statue, we can also see the Church of Our Lady of La Candelaria in front of us. This church dates back to the 18th century and was built at the initiative of immigrants who came from the Canary Islands.

La plaza fue la primera parada de esta ruta histórica y cultural. Además del espacio que rinde homenaje al Libertador Simón Bolívar con una estatua, también podemos ver la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria al frente. Este templo data del siglo XVIII y fue construido por iniciativa de inmigrantes procedentes de las Islas Canarias.

This activity was organized by the community of El Calvario with support from the mayor's office and several hiking groups in the city. More people arrived, and the hike finally began around 7:45 a.m. A broadcaster was in charge of leading the way to liven up the route, and there was also a motorcyclist with horns, livening up the atmosphere with music.

Esta actividad fue organizada por la comunidad de El Calvario con el apoyo de la alcaldía y varios grupos senderistas de la ciudad. Fue llegando más gente y finalmente la caminata comenzó alrededor de las 7:45 am. Un locutor se encargó de ir al frente para amenizar el recorrido, y también había un motorizado con unas cornetas, animando el ambiente con música.

It's been raining a lot these past few days, but fortunately, we had a clear morning. A few minutes later, we arrived at our next stop: the Mariano Montilla Barracks, an impressive military building that resembles a castle.

Ha llovido mucho estos últimos días, pero afortunadamente tuvimos una mañana con cielos despejados. Unos minutos después llegamos a la siguiente parada: el Cuartel Mariano Montilla, una impresionante edificación de uso militar que parece un castillo.

Although its construction began in 1906 at the initiative of then-Venezuelan President Cipriano Castro, who wanted La Victoria to be the country's capital, it wasn't completed until 1937, under the leadership of Eleazar López Contreras. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1978, and the Army's Professional Troops School currently operates here.

Aunque su construcción comenzó en 1906 por iniciativa del entonces presidente de Venezuela Cipriano Castro, quien deseaba que La Victoria fuera la capital del país, no se completó hasta 1937, bajo el liderazgo de Eleazar López Contreras. At the entrance to the Montilla Barracks, we were greeted by a military band, which played for us for a few minutes.

We continue our route to Plaza José Félix Ribas, the city's main square, located in the historic center.

Plaza Ribas was the site of the Battle of La Victoria, a crucial battle in the struggle for Venezuelan independence, on February 12, 1814.

There, young students and seminarians, led by General José Félix Ribas, defended the city and defeated the royalist troops of the Spanish crown. In honor of their heroism, Venezuela celebrates Youth Day every February 12th.

We continued along the route and reached the city's main avenue, where we walked toward Plaza de Las Madres (Mothers' Square), a monument built in the 1960s by the Lions Club, a community service organization.

Continuamos la ruta y llegamos a la avenida principal de la ciudad, para caminar hacia la Plaza de Las Madres, monumento construido en la década de 1960 por el Club de Leones, una organización de servicio comunitario.

Now we were heading towards the Jesús neighborhood, and for that we entered the Sarayauta sector, northwest of the city.

Since it was Sunday and still early, many people were looking out of their windows or going out to the door to see what was happening on the street, why there was music and a crowd walking around there 😄.

Como era domingo y aún temprano, muchas personas se asomaban por las ventanas de sus casas o salían a la puerta a ver qué estaba pasando en la calle, por qué había música y un gentío caminando por allí 😄.

The landscapes here are beautiful, lush with greenery and mountains taking center stage. Continuing along this road, you'll reach Colonia Tovar, Venezuela's German village.

Los paisajes por aquí son muy bonitos, hay mucho verdor y las montañas son las protagonistas. Siguiendo por esta carretera se llega a la Colonia Tovar, el pueblo alemán de Venezuela.

We entered the Jesús neighborhood, climbing a very steep street. This was the part where we sweated the most 😄.

Nos adentramos por el barrio Jesús subiendo por una callecita bien empinada, esta fue la parte donde más sudamos 😄.

This neighborhood, like many others in Venezuela, was built by people among the hills. There's a lot of improvisation here, but also beauty.

Este barrio, como muchos otros de Venezuela, ha sido construido por la gente entre los cerros. Hay mucha improvisación por aquí, pero también belleza.

So we arrived at another stop on this tour, the only one of these places that I hadn't been to before. It was the old La Victoria aqueduct irrigation ditch, popularly known as Guzmán Bridge.

Así llegamos a otra parada de este recorrido, el único de estos lugares que yo no conocía, se trata de la antigua acequia de acueducto de La Victoria, conocido popularmente como Puente Guzmán.

It's an incredible ancient structure; it looks so striking in that landscape. It's a shame its state of preservation is poor. I hope the responsible authorities (the mayor's office) take steps to ensure this work isn't lost.

Little by little, we all crossed the bridge, whose history dates back to 1875, when it was built during the government of Antonio Guzmán Blanco.

Poco a poco todos cruzamos el puente, cuya historia se remonta al año 1875, cuando fue construido durante el gobierno de Antonio Guzmán Blanco.

The Venezuelan Cultural Heritage Institute's Catalogue states the following about the bridge: "It consists of three large successive pointed arches over which is a ditch or canal to carry water. It was built using large stones with mortar and bricks—mixed masonry. This engineering work was part of the aqueduct that supplied water to the small town, and was fed by water from the northern slope of the Aragua mountain range, which by gravity reached the tanks that were located near the hill of the El Calvario Chapel, where this infrastructure is located."

En el Catálogo del Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de Venezuela se lee lo siguiente sobre el puente: "Se trata de tres grandes arcos ojivales sucesivos sobre los cuales está una acequia o canal para conducir agua. Fue levantada utilizando grandes piedras con argamasa y ladrillos —mampostería mixta—. Esta obra de ingeniería era parte del acueducto que surtía de agua al pequeño pueblo, y se alimentaba del agua proveniente de la vertiente norte de la cordillera aragüeña, que por gravedad llegaba a los tanques que estaban situados cerca del Cerro de la Capilla El Calvario, donde se encuentra esta infraestructura."

The last stop on this historical and cultural route was El Calvario, a neighborhood located just a short walk away.

La última parada de esta ruta histórica y cultural fue en El Calvario, barrio que queda cerca de allí, caminando unos minutos.

We arrived at a small square called Guaicaipuro, named after a great indigenous chief, and then climbed the colorful stairs there, which serve as the official entrance to this part of the city.

Then we continued climbing until we reached the Chapel of El Calvario, a temple dedicated to Jesus Christ dating back to 1825.

Shortly before 9:00 a.m., we reached the summit, where the chapel is located. The space there isn't very large, so we were somewhat crowded. The organizers offered us water, fruit, and candy to recharge our batteries.

Every September 14th a mass is celebrated in the church and then a procession, commemorating the date on which an image of Jesus appeared here. According to some historical accounts, this happened in the early 19th century, but it's not entirely clear exactly how.

As part of the route's closing ceremony, the organizers had several activities planned for attendees, including dance therapy to relax muscles and juggling and comedy acts.

My sister and I rested for a while, took a few photos, and then left.
