Some shots of Fortaleza - Brazil Series #1 [ENG-ESP]

When I started blogging on the blockchain, my backpacking experience in Brazil was the first travel diary I shared here, there were 16 posts that I enjoyed writing because it was like going through those places again. However in those articles I gave more prominence to the text and left many photos out, images with which I now start this series dedicated to the great South American country.

Cuando comencé a bloguear en la blockchain, mi experiencia mochilera por Brasil fue el primer diario de viaje que compartí aquí, fueron 16 publicaciones que disfruté mucho escribiendo porque fue como volver a recorrer esos lugares. Sin embargo en esos artículos le di más protagonismo al texto y dejé muchas fotos por fuera, imágenes con las que ahora inicio esta serie dedicada al gran país suramericano.

During the 40 days I was traveling in Brazil I visited five states: Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Months before starting this adventure I had bought a guidebook about the country to assemble the itinerary adjusted to my backpacker budget and I decided to make a route from north to south, so the city of Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará, was the first place I visited. I arrived by plane and immediately contemplated the contrasts in the landscape, nature and the urban meet and mismatch at every turn.

Durante los 40 días que estuve viajando por Brasil visité cinco estados: Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahía, Río de Janeiro y Sao Paulo. Meses antes de iniciar esta aventura había comprado una guía sobre el país para armar el itinerario ajustado a mi presupuesto mochilero y decidí hacer una ruta de norte a sur, entonces la ciudad de Fortaleza, capital del estado de Ceará, fue el primer lugar que conocí. Llegué en avión e inmediatamente contemplé los contrastes en el paisaje, la naturaleza y lo urbano se encuentran y desencuentran a cada rato.

Fortaleza is one of the largest cities in the northeast of Brazil, with more than 2.5 million inhabitants, although as it is so large in territory, it doesn't feel so populous. I got a very cheap hostel in the Iracema area, very close to Beira Mar Avenue, which is next to the urban beaches, and the first thing I did when I left my backpack in the room was to go for a walk there to get a first impression of the city.

Fortaleza es una de las ciudades más grandes del nordeste de Brasil, con más de 2,5 millones de habitantes, aunque como es tan amplia en territorio, no se siente tan populosa. Conseguí un hostal muy barato por la zona de Iracema, muy cerca de la Av. Beira Mar, la cual está al lado de las playas urbanas, y lo primero que hice al dejar mi mochila en la habitación fue ir a caminar por allí para tener una primera impresión de la urbe.

Cities with beaches have always been attractive to me, it seems that the rhythm is different when the sea is present in people's daily lives. Walking around there I found people taking a bath, exercising and others playing volleyball and of course soccer, the sport that most represents this country.

Las ciudades con playas siempre me han parecido atractivas, parece que el ritmo es diferente cuando el mar está presente en la vida diaria de las personas. Al pasear por allí me encontré con gente dándose un baño, ejercitándose y otros jugando voleibol y por supuesto fútbol, el deporte que más representa a este país.

Further down that same avenue, I stumbled upon a street fair, something that excited me because I love to see the creations of local artisans, it gives you an insight into their culture. There were all kinds of things, from colorful paintings to tablecloths, purses, clothes, utensils, accessories (bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc). There were also food stalls and it was the place where I tasted for the first time the tasty tapioca, a kind of tortilla made with cassava flour that is filled with sweet or savory, for example I had a cheese one.

Más adelante por esa misma avenida, me topé con una feria callejera, algo que me emocionó porque me encanta ver las creaciones de los artesanos locales, te da una visión de su cultura. Había todo tipo de cosas, desde coloridas pinturas hasta manteles, carteras, ropa, utensilios, accesorios (pulseras, collares, zarcillos, etc). También había puestos de comida y fue el lugar donde probé por primera vez la sabrosa tapioca, una especie de tortilla hecha con harina de yuca que se rellena con dulce o salado, por ejemplo yo comí una de queso.

After walking almost all afternoon through the downtown area of the city, at sunset I sat for a while at Iracema Beach, a spot where there were many people at that time. It was Saturday and I guess some were getting ready to go out to have fun later, in this region of Brazil there is a very popular dance music genre, the "forró", and it was already in the air.

Después de caminar casi toda la tarde por la zona céntrica de la ciudad, al caer el sol me senté un rato en la Playa de Iracema, un punto en el que había mucha gente a esa hora. Era sábado y supongo que algunos se preparaban para salir a divertirse más tarde, en esta región de Brasil hay un género musical bailable muy popular, el “forró”, y ya se escuchaba en el ambiente.

I stayed four days in Fortaleza, but I didn't spend much time in the city, nature always calls me and I preferred instead to go to several beaches that were on the outskirts, which I had read were a must. But I think I met several emblematic places, like this one I show you below: the Center of Art and Culture Dragâo do Mar (Dragon of the Sea).

Estuve cuatro días hospedada en Fortaleza, pero no le dediqué mucho tiempo a la ciudad, la naturaleza siempre me llama y preferí en cambio ir a varias playas que quedaban en sus afueras, las cuales había leído que eran imperdibles. Pero creo que conocí varios lugares emblemáticos, como este que les muestro a continuación: el Centro de Arte y Cultura Dragâo do Mar (Dragón del Mar).

Inaugurated in 1999, it is one of the most visited cultural centers in Brazil, it is conceived as a meeting place and there is everything to entertain: gallery, theater, cinema, museums, planetarium, training areas, and also around it there are bars, cafes, restaurants and craft stores. I spent a whole morning there.

Inaugurado en 1999, es uno de los centros culturales más visitados de Brasil, está concebido como un sitio de encuentro y hay de todo para entretenerse: galería, teatro, cine, museos, planetario, áreas para la formación, y además alrededor tiene bares, cafés, restaurantes y tiendas de artesanía. Yo pasé toda una mañana allí.

His name pays homage to Francisco José do Nascimento (1839-1914), later called Dragão do Mar, an Afro-Brazilian fisherman who in 1881 led a strike in the port of Fortaleza in which he and his companions refused to transport enslaved blacks on their boat to be sold in Rio de Janeiro and other parts of the country. The port authorities fired him for joining the abolitionists, but in 1884 the state of Ceará abolished slavery and Nascimento became a hero.

Su nombre rinde homenaje a Francisco José do Nascimento (1839-1914), a quien llamaron luego Dragão do Mar, un pescador afrobrasileño que en 1881 lideró una huelga en el puerto de Fortaleza en la que junto a sus compañeros se negó a trasladar en su embarcación a negros esclavizados para ser vendidos en Rio de Janeiro y otras partes del país. Las autoridades del puerto lo despidieron por unirse a los abolicionistas, pero en 1884 el estado de Ceará abolió la esclavitud y Nascimento se convirtió en un héroe.

From one of the aerial corridors of the cultural center, you can see how the old and the modern mix in this city.

Desde uno de los pasillos aéreos que tiene el centro cultural, se puede ver cómo se mezcla lo antiguo y lo moderno en esta ciudad.

This sort of house filled with rubble was one of the art installations in the outdoor spaces.

Esta especie de casa rellena de escombros era una de las instalaciones artísticas que se encontraban en los espacios externos.

Then I continued my tour and entered the Museum of Culture of Ceará, I think every big city should have a place like this where you can find easily digestible information about its history, customs and characters.

Luego continué mi recorrido y entré al Museo de la Cultura de Ceará, creo que toda gran ciudad debería tener un lugar como este donde puedes encontrar información fácil de digerir sobre su historia, costumbres y personajes.

Before leaving the Center of Art and Culture Dragâo do Mar, I passed by a square where the statue of a man stood out, I really liked his expression and I took a couple of pictures, then I found out that it was the poet Patativa do Assaré (1909-2002), one of the most recognized popular writers of the Brazilian northeast.

Antes de irme del Centro de Arte y Cultura Dragâo do Mar, pasé por una plaza donde destacaba la estatua de un señor, me gustó mucho su expresión y le hice un par de fotos, luego me enteré que se trataba del poeta Patativa do Assaré (1909-2002), uno de los cultores populares más reconocidos del nordeste brasileño.

His literary work portrays above all the hard life of the people who lived in the sertâo, the arid land of this region.

Su obra literaria retrata sobre todo la dura vida de las personas que vivían en el sertâo, la tierra árida de esta región.

After this cultural tour I opted to visit something busier, the Central Market of Fortaleza, which was only a few blocks away. I thought it would be an old place but I was surprised by its modernity, it actually looked like a big shopping mall. The four floors were crowded with people, there were so many things that I didn't know what to look at, here you get from the most traditional of the region to the most commercial things you could buy anywhere else.

Después de este paseo cultural opté por visitar algo más ajetreado, el Mercado Central de Fortaleza, que quedaba a sólo unas cuadras. Pensé que sería un lugar antiguo pero me sorprendió su modernidad, en realidad parecía un gran centro comercial. Los cuatro pisos que tiene estaban abarrotados de gente, había tantas cosas que no sabía qué mirar, aquí consigues desde lo más tradicional de la región hasta lo más comercial que podrías comprar en cualquier otro sitio.

I had lunch, rested for a while and took a bus to a natural place with a very attractive name: Praia do Futuro (Future Beach), it is 5 km from the city center and according to what I was told it is one of the most visited. I wanted to go for a swim but the weather changed suddenly and I didn't feel like it, but I still went for a walk along this very wide beach that has all kinds of services for people.

Almorcé, descansé un poco y tomé un autobús para ir a un lugar natural con un nombre muy atractivo: Praia do Futuro (Playa del Futuro), está a 5 Km del centro de la ciudad y según me dijeron es de las más visitadas. Quería darme un baño pero el clima cambió repentinamente y se me quitaron las ganas, pero igual di mi paseo por esta amplísima playa que cuenta con todo tipo de servicios para la gente.
