El último domingo de mayo se celebra en Venezuela el Día Nacional del Árbol, una efeméride que se instauró en 1951 con el objetivo de concienciar sobre la importancia de los árboles para el equilibrio medioambiental y también para fomentar la participación de las personas en la protección de la naturaleza.

The last Sunday of May is celebrated in Venezuela the National Tree Day, an event that was established in 1951 with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of trees for the environmental balance and also to encourage the participation of people in the protection of nature.

Varios grupos senderistas y el Instituto Nacional de Parques (Inparques), convocaron a una jornada de reforestación este domingo 26 de mayo a las 8:00 am en el cerro La Bandera de La Victoria, estado Aragua, y no me quise perder esta actividad. Se le pidió a las personas que llevaran alguna planta para sembrar, sobre todo árboles frutales, y yo llevé una lechoza (papaya) que me dio mi mamá, ella puso a germinar una semilla y la planta se puso de este tamaño más o menos en dos meses.

Several hiking groups and the National Institute of Parks (Inparques) called for a reforestation day this Sunday, May 26th at 8:00 am at La Bandera hill in La Victoria, Aragua state, and I didn't want to miss this activity. People were asked to bring a plant to plant, especially fruit trees, and I brought a papaya that my mother gave me, she germinated a seed and the plant grew to this size in about two months.

Pero no pasaba nada si alguien no había llevado su planta, también era importante asistir para colaborar con la siembra, ya que mucha gente donó pero no pudo venir, así que había bastantes plantas y por eso se necesitaban muchas manos para completar la tarea.

But it was okay if someone had not brought their plant, it was also important to attend to collaborate with the planting, as many people donated but could not come, so there were quite a few plants and therefore many hands were needed to complete the task.

Alguien vino con su camioneta, y el que quería, ponía su planta allí atrás, como la primera parte del camino en subida es por una vía de cemento, este vehículo facilitó las cosas. Mi planta no pesaba mucho, y decidí cargarla hasta arriba.

Someone came with his truck, whoever wanted to, put his plant back there, as the first part of the road uphill is on a cement road, this car made things easier. My plant did not weigh much, and I decided to carry it to the top.

Mientras esperábamos para empezar a subir el cerro, pregunté qué plantas había, algunas de ellas: mango, níspero, samán, pomarrosa, chaguaramos, aguacate y otras que no recuerdo. Sólo yo había llevado lechoza (papaya) 😊.

While we were waiting to start climbing the hill, I asked what plants there were, some of them: mango, medlar, monkey pod tree, rose apple tree, chaguarama palm, avocado and others that I don't remember. Only I had brought papaya 😊.

El entusiasmo estaba alto, sólo esperábamos que no lloviera, había amanecido muy nublado.

Antes de que nosotros llegáramos, varios guardaparques que trabajan aquí habían abierto los orificios en la tierra a un lado de la vía, para que al ir subiendo fuéramos sembrando más rápido.

Before we arrived, several park rangers who work here had opened holes in the ground on one side of the road, so that as we climbed, we could plant more quickly.

Se iban tomando las plantas de la parte de atrás de la camioneta y poco a poco todos los huecos fueron llenados con futuros árboles, que esperemos pronto se consoliden y nos ofrezcan oxígeno, frescor y belleza. Hace un par de meses esta montaña sufrió mucha pérdida de vegetación por los incendios.

Plants were being taken from the back of the truck and little by little all the holes were filled with future trees, which we hope will soon consolidate and offer us oxygen, freshness and beauty. A couple of months ago this mountain suffered a lot of vegetation loss due to fires.

Faltaba poco para llegar a la parte donde el sendero es de tierra, pero aún teníamos muchas plantas, por ejemplo la mía, yo la quería sembrar en una de las colinas.

It was not long before we reached the part of the trail where the path is dirt, but we still had a lot of plants, for example mine, I wanted to plant it on one of the hills.

We continued to climb and put in more plants, and from above I saw that there was another group of people planting at the bottom of the mountain.

Finalmente llegó el turno de mi lechoza (papaya), ¡qué emoción! Me tardé en sembrarla, no sólo porque la quería poner en la colina, sino también porque debíamos buscar una botella para rodear su pequeño tronco.

Finally it was the turn of my papaya, what a thrill! It took me a while to plant it, not only because I wanted to put it on the hill, but also because we had to find a bottle to surround its small trunk.

Pisé bien la tierra a su alrededor para dejarla lo más estable posible.

I stepped well on the soil around it to make it as stable as possible.

Un rato después una persona del grupo me consiguió la botella, la cortó y con cuidado recogí las hojas de la planta para que pasara hasta la tierra, donde la incrusté bien. Me dijeron que con esta protección, los bachacos, esas hormigas grandes que viven por aquí y suelen comerse algunas plantas, no la atacarían, espero funcione.

A while later a person from the group got me the bottle, cut it and carefully I picked up the leaves of the plant so that it would pass through to the soil, where I embedded it well. I was told that with this protection, the bachacos, those big ants that live around here and usually eat some plants, would not attack it, I hope it works.

Luego subimos hasta otra colina, a sembrar los últimos árboles.

Then we climbed up another hill to plant the last trees.

Y allí nos reunimos, para escuchar a los organizadores de la actividad y felicitarnos todos por esta jornada tan necesaria en tiempos donde el cuidado de la naturaleza es vital para la supervivencia en la tierra.

And there we met, to listen to the organizers of the activity and congratulate all of us for this day so necessary in times where caring for nature is vital for survival on earth.
