Quito, my first encounter with the capital of the "Middle of the World" - The Ecuador diary / Quito, mi primer encuentro con la capital de la "Mitad del Mundo" - El diario de Ecuador

In my travel archive, I have a lot of stories that I haven't written yet, and although it's been a while since I had those adventures, when I look at the photos, all those moments come back to me, and what better place than this blog to immortalize them. It's never too late to share our experiences, and since these places are still on the map, I'm sure they can be useful to anyone looking for information about these destinations.

En mi archivo de viajes tengo un montón de historias que aún no he escrito, y aunque ha pasado tiempo desde que viví esas aventuras, cuando veo las fotos, todos esos momentos vuelven a mi memoria, y qué mejor lugar que este blog para inmortalizarlos. Nunca es demasiado tarde para compartir nuestras experiencias, y dado que estos lugares siguen estando en el mapa, estoy segura de que pueden ser útiles para cualquiera que busque información sobre estos destinos.

That said, I begin my travel diary of Ecuador, where a few years ago I spent 28 days traveling through various regions.

Dicho esto, doy inicio a mi diario de viaje por Ecuador, donde hace unos años pasé 28 días recorriendo diversas regiones.

I planned this trip for several months, and of course, I also saved enough money to pay for it, I had a good job at the time. In previous years, I had been to Argentina, Cuba, Uruguay, Chile, and Brazil, and those experiences motivated me to continue exploring Latin America, so my next choice was Ecuador, the country divided into two hemispheres where you can stand at the center of the world in its capital city. Doesn't that sound exciting?

Este viaje lo planifiqué durante varios meses, y claro, también ahorré lo suficiente para poder pagarlo, tenía un buen trabajo en ese momento. En años anteriores había estado en Argentina, Cuba, Uruguay, Chile y Brasil, y esas experiencias me motivaron a seguir explorando Latinoamérica, por lo que mi siguiente elección fue Ecuador, el país dividido en dos hemisferios donde en su capital puedes pisar el centro del mundo. ¿No suena emocionante?

On a flight from Venezuela, I arrived in Quito on a Thursday afternoon and took a taxi from the airport to a hostel in La Mariscal area called Blue House. I had emailed them a few days earlier and they told me they had availability for the dates I wanted, and although I didn't pay anything in advance, they reserved a room for me.

En un vuelo desde Venezuela, llegué a Quito un jueves por la tarde y tomé un taxi desde el aeropuerto hasta un hostal que quedaba en la zona de La Mariscal llamado Blue House. Les había enviado un correo electrónico unos días antes y me dijeron que tenían disponibilidad para las fechas que yo quería, y aunque no les pagué nada por adelantado, me reservaron una habitación.

As it was already getting dark when I arrived, I didn't leave the hostel, I put my things away in the room and went to see the facilities. There was a living room, a patio, and a kitchen. I sat in the living room reading some tourist brochures and met another guest, Vero, an Argentine girl who was also traveling alone. We talked for a while and agreed to go out together the next day to visit the historic center of Quito.

Como ya estaba oscureciendo cuando llegué, no salí del hostal, acomodé mis cosas en la habitación y fui a ver las instalaciones. Había una sala de estar, un patio y la cocina. Me senté en la sala a leer unos folletos turísticos y allí conocí a otro huésped, Vero, una chica argentina que también estaba viajando sola. Nos pusimos a conversar un buen rato y acordamos salir juntas al día siguiente para ir al centro histórico de Quito.

Before 9:00 a.m., we were already out on the street, and on the recommendation of the hostel staff, we went to a bank to get some small bills. As many people know, after a deep economic crisis, Ecuador abandoned the Sucre in 2000 and adopted the US dollar as its official currency to stabilize its economy. But by losing monetary autonomy and being unable to issue coins and bills, liquidity became limited. So, it's a good idea to exchange at least $20 in small bills so you don't have problems paying small amounts in cash, because often they don't have change to give you if you pay with large bills.

Antes de las 9:00 de la mañana ya estábamos en la calle, y por recomendación de la gente del hostal, fuimos a un banco para obtener sencillo. Como muchos saben, tras una profunda crisis económica, en el año 2000 Ecuador abandonó el Sucre y para estabilizar su economía adoptó el dólar estadounidense como moneda oficial. Pero al perder la autonomía en lo monetario y no poder emitir monedas y billetes, la liquidez se vio limitada. Entonces, es bueno cambiar al menos 20 dólares en billetes o monedas para no tener problemas a la hora de pagar pequeñas cantidades en efectivo, ya que a menudo no tienen cambio para darte si pagas con billetes grandes.

With that money in our pockets, we took a bus, which cost $0.25, and arrived at the impressive historic center of Quito.

Con ese dinero en nuestros bolsillos, tomamos un autobús, que costaba $0,25, y llegamos al impresionante centro histórico de Quito.

I had marked a few places to visit in the Ecuador travel guide I was carrying with me. I mentioned them to Vero, and she liked the itinerary, but we didn't follow it too strictly. We started walking and let ourselves be surprised by whatever appeared in front of us.

Había marcado algunos lugares para visitar en la guía de viaje de Ecuador que llevaba conmigo. Se los mencioné a Vero y a ella le gustó el itinerario, pero no lo seguimos al pie de la letra. Empezamos a caminar y nos dejamos sorprender por lo que aparecía frente a nosotras.

With the largest (320 hectares) and best-preserved historic center in Latin America, Quito was the first city in the world to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978.

Con el centro histórico más grande (320 hectáreas) y mejor conservado de Latinoamérica, Quito fue la primera ciudad del mundo en ser declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 1978.

Walking through its historic district and surrounding areas, you feel like you are in an open-air museum. Spanish colonial architecture dominates the landscape, but other styles can also be seen, there is a great deal of intermingling. At every turn, you find yourself with too many things to see: beautiful cobbled streets, squares, houses, buildings, museums, churches... in short, many gems, much art. In addition, all this within an attractive geography, Quito is a city surrounded by great mountains and is the second highest capital in the world, at 2,850 meters above sea level.

Caminando su zona histórica y alrededores te sientes como en un museo al aire libre. La arquitectura virreinal española domina el paisaje, pero también se pueden ver otros estilos, hay una gran mezcla. A cada paso te consigues con demasiadas cosas que ver: hermosas calles empedradas, plazas, casas, edificios, museos, iglesias… en fin, muchas joyas, mucho arte. Además, todo esto dentro de una atractiva geografía, Quito es una ciudad rodeada de grandes montañas y es la segunda capital más alta del mundo, a 2850 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

We went north of the historic center, climbed a steep street and arrived at the imposing Basilica del Voto Nacional (Basilica of the National Vote), a neo-Gothic temple with so many interesting details on its facade that it made us look up for a while.

Nos fuimos al norte del centro histórico, subimos una calle empinada y llegamos a la imponente Basílica del Voto Nacional, un templo neogótico con tantos detalles interesantes en su fachada que nos hizo mirar hacia arriba durante un buen rato.

This work by French architect Emilio Tarlier dates back to 1924 and is one of the most outstanding of its style in Latin America.

Esta obra del arquitecto francés Emilio Tarlier data de 1924 y es una de las más destacadas de su estilo en Latinoamérica.

For a very reasonable price, you can climb the towers to enjoy panoramic views of the city, but we didn't go up, preferring to continue admiring the facade. One of the most striking features of this temple are its gargoyles, sculptures that serve as drains.

Por un monto bastante económico se puede acceder a sus torres para tener vistas panorámicas de la ciudad, pero nosotras no subimos, preferimos seguir viendo la fachada. Una de las cosas más llamativas que tiene este templo son sus gárgolas, esas esculturas que funcionan como desagües.

Look at that! They designed some very unique gargoyles, several figures of animals from Ecuadorian wildlife such as armadillos, pumas, alligators, turtles, monkeys, albatrosses, among others. I thought it was so original; I had never seen anything like it before.

¡Miren eso! Se concibieron unas gárgolas muy particulares, varias figuras de animales de la fauna ecuatoriana, como armadillos, pumas, caimanes, tortugas, monos, albatros, entre otros. Me pareció tan original, nunca había visto algo así.

The next place we visited was the Contemporary Art Center, a large museum housed in a former military hospital. Admission was free and we spent about an hour there viewing all the exhibitions.

El siguiente lugar que visitamos fue el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, un amplio museo que funciona en un antiguo hospital militar. La entrada era gratuita y pasamos como una hora allí viendo todas las exposiciones.

Below are images of some of the things that caught my attention, both in terms of the art on display and the structure of the museum.

As is well known, contemporary art is very diverse and open to interpretation by the viewer.

Como es bien sabido, el arte contemporáneo es muy variado y abierto a la interpretación del espectador.

When we left the Contemporary Art Center, it was already noon and we were hungry, so our next goal was to find somewhere to eat. But of course, in our search, we continued exploring the streets of the beautiful historic center and watching the comings and goings of its people.

Cuando salimos del Centro de Arte Contemporáneo ya era mediodía y teníamos hambre, así que nuestro siguiente objetivo era encontrar algún lugar para comer. Pero claro, en esa búsqueda seguimos explorando las calles del hermoso centro histórico y viendo el movimiento de su gente.

And speaking of its people, according to historical data, the name of the city comes from the Quito, who were the first inhabitants of this area before the arrival of the Incas in the 15th century. Then came Spanish colonization, which dominated the region for three centuries, and in 1830 Ecuador gained its independence.

Y hablando de su gente, según datos históricos, el nombre de la ciudad proviene de los quito, quienes fueron los primeros habitantes de esta zona antes de la llegada de los incas en el siglo XV. Luego llegó la colonización española, que dominó la región por tres siglos, y en 1830 Ecuador logró su independencia.

Despite the fusion left behind by these historical events, which is evident in the architecture, art, culture, and faces of the people, the indigenous, the native, is very present wherever you look, and for me, that is one of the attractions you find here.

A pesar de la fusión que dejaron estos acontecimientos históricos, evidente en la arquitectura, el arte, la cultura y los rostros de la gente, lo indígena, lo nativo, está muy presente donde quiera que mires, y para mí, ese es uno de los atractivos que encuentras aquí.

In Ecuador there are 14 indigenous nationalities, which, according to what I have read, total more than 1,300,000 people, almost 8% of the country's population, with the Kichwa being the most numerous, with more than half a million. The worldview of the indigenous peoples of the Americas is something that has always interested me, and here many of them still preserve their languages and customs.

En Ecuador hay 14 nacionalidades indígenas, que según leí suman más de 1.300.000 personas, casi el 8% de la población del país, siendo los más numerosos los kichwa, con más de medio millón. La cosmovisión de los pueblos originarios de toda América es algo que siempre me ha parecido interesante, y aquí muchos de ellos siguen conservando sus lenguas y costumbres.

Returning to our search for a place to have lunch, we arrived at the famous La Ronda street, which is full of bars, restaurants, and a great cultural atmosphere.

Volviendo a nuestra búsqueda de un sitio para almorzar, llegamos a la famosa calle La Ronda, que está llena de bares, restaurantes y un gran ambiente cultural.

We walked down this street to see what menus and prices were available. Of course, we wanted to try some of the local cuisine.

Recorrimos esta calle para ver las opciones de menús y precios que había. Por supuesto queríamos probar algo de la gastronomía local.

And we found a nice place. I don't remember the name of the restaurant or the dish I ordered, but it included the famous ceviche (marinated seafood) accompanied by various types of corn, plantains, salad, and some bread rolls. Everything was delicious 😋.

Y conseguimos un buen lugar. No recuerdo el nombre del restaurante ni del plato que pedí, pero incluía el célebre ceviche (mariscos marinados) acompañado de varios tipos de maíz, plátanos, ensalada y unos pancitos. Todo estaba delicioso 😋.

With our batteries recharged, we continued our walk through the historic center, the ideal place to capture in photos the idiosyncrasy of this city.

Con las pilas recargadas, continuamos el paseo por el centro histórico, el lugar ideal para capturar en fotos la idiosincrasia de esta ciudad.

We passed in front of the Government Palace or Carondelet Palace, seat of the executive branch and official residence of the President of the Republic of Ecuador, and were told that there were free guided tours. We thought it sounded interesting and decided to queue up to go in, as there were only a few minutes left before the next tour.

Pasamos frente al Palacio de Gobierno o Palacio de Carondelet, sede del poder ejecutivo y residencia oficial del presidente de la República del Ecuador, y nos dijeron que había visitas guiadas gratuitas. Nos pareció interesante y decidimos hacer la cola para ingresar, faltaban pocos minutos para el siguiente tour.

During colonial times, this building was the seat of the Royal Court and the Governor's Office. When the country gained independence, it was given a new use and was also remodeled in a neoclassical style.

Durante la época colonial, esta edificación fue sede de la Real Audiencia y de la Gobernación. Cuando el país se independizó se le dio nuevo uso y también fue remodelado con un aire neoclásico.

We entered the inner courtyard, and that's where the tour began. They explained that there were exhibitions in various areas of the palace and that, obviously, as it was the seat of government, some areas were restricted.

Entramos al patio interior y allí comenzó la visita. Nos explicaron que había exposiciones en varios espacios del palacio, y que obviamente, al ser sede del gobierno, algunas zonas estaban restringidas.

One of the most striking works on display in the palace is Osvaldo Guayasamín's mural about the Amazon.

Una de las obras más llamativas que se pueden apreciar en el palacio es el mural de Osvaldo Guayasamín sobre el Amazonas.

We went up to the second floor, where we were able to visit the Yellow Room, with portraits of all the country's democratically elected presidents; the Banquet Hall, where official receptions are held and Quito art is displayed; and other rooms exhibiting gifts received by the presidents and other objects of historical value.

Subimos al segundo piso, donde pudimos visitar la Sala Amarilla, con retratos de todos los presidentes elegidos democráticamente del país; el Salón de Banquetes, donde se celebran recepciones oficiales y se exhibe arte quiteño; y otras salas que exhiben obsequios recibidos por los presidentes y otros objetos de valor histórico.

When I was in Ecuador, Rafael Correa was president. Our guide told us that he was there at that moment, in a meeting, and that he didn't mind tourists spending a few minutes looking around the room while they were working. You can see him in this photo, sitting in front of the flag.

Cuando estuve en Ecuador, el presidente era Rafael Correa. Nuestro guía nos dijo que él estaba allí en ese momento, en una reunión, y que no le molestaba que los turistas pasaran unos minutos a ver la sala mientras estaban trabajando. Lo pueden ver en esta foto, sentado delante de la bandera.

The guided tour lasted about half an hour, and when we left the palace it was already around 5:30 in the afternoon. We took some photos there and decided to return to the hostel before it got dark.

La visita guiada duró una media hora, y cuando salimos del palacio ya eran como las 5:30 de la tarde. Nos tomamos unas fotos allí y decidimos regresar al hostal antes de que oscureciera.

And so ended my first encounter with Ecuador's capital city, well, during the day, because that night I was invited out and got to see one more place, but this is getting too long, so I'll leave that for the next post 😉.
