I like to visit cities, but I like being close to nature much more, so after a couple of days in Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia, I wanted to go somewhere paradisiacal that I could afford with my backpacker budget, and after some research I ended up choosing Morro de Sâo Paulo.

Conocer ciudades me gusta, pero estar cerca de la naturaleza me gusta mucho más, por eso después de un par de días en Salvador, la capital del estado de Bahía, quería irme a algún lugar paradisíaco que pudiera pagar con mi presupuesto de mochilera, y averiguando un poco por ahí terminé eligiendo Morro de Sâo Paulo.

In the morning I took a boat at the Salvador Maritime Tourist Terminal and after about 40 minutes of a bumpy ride, we arrived at the island of Itaparica, where a bus took us to the town of Valença and from there a boat took us to Morro de Sâo Paulo.

En la mañana tomé una embarcación en el Terminal Marítimo Turístico de Salvador y tras unos 40 minutos de viaje bien movido, llegamos a la isla de Itaparica, donde un autobús nos trasladó a la población de Valença y de ahí una lancha nos llevó hasta Morro de Sâo Paulo.

It was already noon when I arrived and since I didn't have a reservation in any hotel, the first thing I did was to ask where there were inns or hostels. They sent me to the main street of town which is near the port, so I walked around and got a room in a small inn. After leaving my backpack I went out to see the surroundings and arrived at the beaches, a small one called Prainha or First Beach and then Praia da Poça or Second Beach, where I bathed and spent the afternoon, apparently it had rained because I was greeted by a spectacular rainbow.

Ya era mediodía cuando llegué y como no tenía reservación en ningún hotel, lo primero que hice fue preguntar dónde había posadas u hostales. Me mandaron a la calle principal del pueblo que está cerca del puerto, así que me fui caminando y conseguí habitación en una pequeña posada. Tras dejar mi mochila salí a ver los alrededores y llegué a las playas, una chiquita llamada Prainha o Primera Playa y luego Praia da Poça o Segunda Playa, donde me bañé y pasé la tarde, al parecer había llovido porque me recibió un arco iris espectacular.

In Morro de Sâo Paulo, located north of the island of Tinharé, you get a sample of the hundreds of beaches in the state of Bahia, in northeastern Brazil. This region has 900 km of coastline and it is normal that when you visit some of them you have them all to yourself.

En Morro de Sâo Paulo, ubicado al norte de la isla de Tinharé, obtienes una muestra de las cientos de playas que hay en el estado de Bahía, en el nordeste brasileño. Esta región tiene 900 km de costa y es normal que al visitar algunas de ellas, las tengas sólo para ti.

The day after my arrival I wanted to walk beyond the Second Beach, and so I did along the shore, until I reached the Fifth Beach about 5 km from the village. Although they have their names, the beaches here are known more by number. From Third Beach on I saw almost no people, I really felt like I owned the place 😂.

Al día siguiente de mi llegada quería caminar más allá de Segunda Playa, y así lo hice por toda la orilla, hasta llegar a la Quinta Playa a unos 5 Km del pueblo. Aunque tienen sus nombres, las playas aquí se conocen más por número. A partir de Tercera Playa ya casi no vi gente, de verdad me sentí dueña del lugar 😂.

Surely this is how the first people who came to this island felt. According to what I read, apart from the Portuguese colonizers who arrived in the 16th century, this place was the lair of Dutch and French pirates, maybe there is some treasure hidden here...

Seguramente así se sintieron los primeros que llegaron a esta isla. Según leí, aparte de los colonizadores portugueses que arribaron en el siglo XVI, este lugar por ser tan remoto fue la guarida de piratas holandeses y franceses, quizás haya algún tesoro escondido por aquí…

As I advanced, the beauty of the place became more explicit, not only because of the sea but also because of the surroundings. Lush vegetation, rivers, mangroves, in short, the tropics in its splendor.

A medida que avanzaba, la belleza del lugar se iba haciendo más explícita, no sólo por el mar sino por los alrededores. Exuberante vegetación, ríos, manglares, en fin, el trópico en su esplendor.

I spent practically the whole day on this walk from the first to the fifth beach, a few hours that I enjoyed very much, and when the sunset caught me I started my way back to town.

Pasé prácticamente todo el día en este paseo desde la Primera hasta la Quinta Playa, unas horas que disfruté muchísimo, y cuando me agarró el atardecer emprendí el regreso al pueblo.

The next day I only had the morning to see some other places in Morro de Sâo Paulo because the boat back to Salvador left at 12:00 noon. I was told about the fortress and the lighthouse, so I got up early and walked there. I almost forgot to mention that no vehicles of any kind circulate in this town, they are forbidden.

Al día siguiente sólo tenía la mañana para conocer algún otro lugar de Morro de Sâo Paulo porque el barco de regreso a Salvador salía a las 12:00 del mediodía. Me comentaron sobre la fortaleza y el faro, así que me levanté temprano y fui hasta allá caminando. Casi se me olvida mencionar que en este pueblo no circula ningún tipo de vehículo, están prohibidos.

I arrived at the fortress, which was built in 1630 to fight mainly Dutch pirates, its name is Tapyrandú. Although it is generally in good condition, there are some parts in ruins.

Llegué a la fortaleza, la cual fue construida en 1630 para combatir principalmente a los piratas holandeses, su nombre es Tapyrandú. Aunque en general está en buenas condiciones de conservación, hay algunas partes en ruinas.

Then I took a wooded path up a hill to go to the lighthouse dating from 1855, and also not to miss the panoramic views of the beach and the town.

Después me metí por un sendero boscoso que ascendía una colina para ir hacia el faro que data de 1855, y también para no perderme las vistas panorámicas de la playa y el pueblo.

At the top I was surprised to find that there was a zip line to launch to the First Beach, although unfortunately it wasn't working at the time, maybe I would have encouraged me to do it.

Arriba me encontré con la sorpresa de que había una tirolina para lanzarse hacia la Primera Playa, aunque lamentablemente no estaba funcionando en ese momento, quizás me hubiese animado a hacerlo.

At about 10:00 a.m. I returned to the inn, finished organizing my backpack and arrived on time at the port to take the boat back to Salvador.

Como a las 10:00 de la mañana regresé a la posada, terminé de organizar mi mochila y llegué a tiempo al puerto para tomar el barco de regreso a Salvador.
