After spending three days between the cities of Recife and Olinda, I wanted to get away from the city and go to one of the coastal towns in the state of Pernambuco, both to feel closer to nature and also to see more beaches in Brazil. The place that had caught my attention and I marked in my tourist guide was Porto de Galinhas, which translated into English is Port of Hens, a rather curious name, don't you think?

Después de estar tres días entre las ciudades de Recife y Olinda, quise alejarme de lo urbano e ir hacia algún pueblo costero del estado de Pernambuco, tanto para sentirme más cerca de la naturaleza como también para conocer más playas de Brasil. El lugar que me había llamado la atención y marqué en mi guía turística fue Porto de Galinhas, que traducido al español es Puerto de Gallinas, un nombre bastante curioso, ¿no creen?

From Recife I took a bus in the morning and arrived there before noon, this town is about 70 km from the capital of Pernambuco. As soon as I started walking down the main street of the place to find the hostel where I was going to stay, chickens and hens appeared everywhere, ok, they were not real, but their presence adorns anything around here and gives a picturesque and funny touch to everything.

Desde Recife tomé un autobús en la mañana y llegué allá antes del mediodía, este pueblo queda a unos 70 Km de la capital de Pernambuco. Apenas empecé a caminar por la calle principal del lugar para ubicar el hostal donde me iba a quedar, aparecieron gallinas y pollos por todos lados, ok, no eran de verdad, pero su presencia adorna cualquier cosa por aquí y le da un toque pintoresco y gracioso a todo.

However, the story behind the name of the town is not so funny, it turns out that it is called Porto de Galinhas (Port of Hens) because people who were going to be enslaved arrived here in ships at a time when that was forbidden. The slave trade was banned in 1853 but many evaded this law and brought them hidden between cages carrying these birds, which today are like the symbol of the town.

Sin embargo, la historia detrás del nombre del pueblo no es tan divertida, resulta que se llama Puerto de Gallinas porque aquí llegaban en barcos personas que iban a ser esclavizadas en una época en que eso estaba prohibido. El comercio de esclavos se prohibió en 1853 pero muchos evadían esta ley y los traían escondidos entre jaulas que transportaban a estas aves, las cuales hoy en día son como el símbolo del pueblo.

After leaving my backpack at the hostel I went for a walk and headed to the main attraction of the town, its central beach. Although it was quite cloudy that day, it was noticeable that the waters were clear, calm and shallow.

Luego de dejar mi mochila en el hostal, salí a caminar y me dirigí al principal atractivo del pueblo, su playa central. Aunque estaba bastante nublado ese día, se veía que las aguas eran claras, tranquilas y de poca profundidad.

This beach is very visited because of the attractive natural pools that form in the coral reefs, about 100 meters from the shore, when the tide is low. There are several jangadas (wooden boats with sails) that take people there and also you can dive and see the marine fauna with a simple mask because the visibility is very good.

Esta playa es muy visitada por las atractivas piscinas naturales que se forman en los arrecifes de coral, a unos 100 metros de la orilla, cuando la marea está baja. Hay varias jangadas (embarcaciones de madera con vela) que llevan a la gente hasta allí y además se puede bucear y ver la fauna marina con una simple máscara porque la visibilidad es muy buena.

Next to the main beach of Porto de Galinhas is another less crowded beach of great beauty, Maracaípe, which I reached by walking for about 30 minutes along the shore.

Al lado de la playa principal de Porto de Galinhas se encuentra otra menos concurrida de gran belleza, Maracaípe, a la cual llegué caminando durante unos 30 minutos por toda la orilla.

Maracaípe is the destination for those who love the wind and all that can be done with it and the waves: surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing. Also, if you walk a few minutes more you reach Pontal de Maracaípe, where you can see the meeting between the river and the sea framed between palm trees and golden sand.

Maracaípe es el destino para los que aman el viento y todo lo que se puede hacer con él y las olas: surf, kitesurf, windsurf. Además, si caminas unos minutos más llegas a Pontal de Maracaípe, donde puedes ver el encuentro entre el río y el mar enmarcado entre palmeras y arena dorada.

I returned to the village of Porto de Galhinas at sunset and found that its streets had quite a lively atmosphere at that time, there were many people and a variety of places to eat, as well as bars and nightclubs.

Volví al pueblo de Porto de Galhinas al atardecer y me encontré que sus calles tienen un ambiente bastante animado a esas horas, había mucha gente y una gran variedad de sitios para comer, además de bares y discotecas.

The next day I opted for another beach farther away with an excursion offered by the people at the hostel where I stayed, called Carneiros Beach (Praia dos Carneiros). To get there we went first to the city of Tamandaré, which is about 55 km from Porto de Galinhas and from there we took a boat.

Al día siguiente opté por otra playa más lejana con una excursión que ofrecía la gente del hostal donde me quedé, se llama Playa de Carneiros (Praia dos Carneiros). Para llegar fuimos primero a la ciudad de Tamandaré, que queda a unos 55 Km de Porto de Galinhas y de ahí tomamos un barco.

The boat ride lasted about an hour and on the way to our destination we stopped at a small beach where there was clay, you could smear yourself if you wanted and then take a dip.

El viaje en barco duró como una hora y en el trayecto hacia nuestro destino hicimos parada en una pequeña playa donde había arcilla, el que quería podía embadurnarse y luego darse un chapuzón.

I didn't know what the name of this little beach was, its landscape seemed very exotic to me with those palm trees and stones around.

No supe cuál era el nombre de esta playita, su paisaje me pareció muy exótico con esas palmeras y piedras alrededor.

We returned to the ship to continue our journey, as we went along there were postcard-like images everywhere.

Volvimos al barco para continuar nuestro viaje, a medida que avanzábamos había imágenes como de postal por todos lados.

Finally we arrive at Carneiros Beach, near the shore stands out the rocky landscape with reefs, where natural pools are formed. The boat left us near a long rock that leads you to the shore, since due to the conditions of this beach it is not possible to get any closer.

Finalmente llegamos a Playa de Carneiros, cerca de la orilla destaca el paisaje rocoso con arrecifes, donde se forman piscinas naturales. El barco nos dejó cerca de una larga roca que te conduce a la orilla, ya que por las condiciones de esta playa no se puede acercar más.

Apart from the small group I arrived with, there were few people here, so we were able to enjoy ourselves without crowds. The waters are very calm, clear and shallow. On the rocks and reefs you can see a lot of marine fauna, there were sea urchins, fish and many plants.

Aparte del pequeño grupo con el que llegué, había poca gente aquí, así que pudimos disfrutar sin multitudes. Las aguas son muy tranquilas, claras y poco profundas. En las rocas y arrecifes puedes ver una gran cantidad de fauna marina, había erizos, peces y muchas plantas.

Carneiros Beach is surrounded by several private properties such as inns, restaurants and clubs, and there are few public accesses. Those who go by land must pay parking or consume something in these expensive places to enter, so going by boat is a good option to save money because it leaves you directly on the shore of the beach.

Playa de Carneiros está rodeada de varias propiedades privadas, como posadas, restaurantes y clubes, y son pocos los accesos públicos. Los que van por tierra deben pagar estacionamiento o consumir algo en esos costosos lugares para poder entrar, por eso ir por barco es una buena opción para ahorrar porque te deja directamente en la orilla de la playa.

We were there until about four o'clock in the afternoon, I hope you enjoyed watching these pictures.
