Join me to the Mérida cable car in Venezuela, the highest and longest in the world [ENG-ESP]

It has always been one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country and the most visited site in Merida state, in the Andean region, and it is fully justified that position it has earned because it is really spectacular, both its structure and everything you will see there.

Siempre ha sido una de las mayores atracciones turísticas del país y el sitio más visitado del estado Mérida, en la región andina, y está totalmente justificada esa posición que se ha ganado porque es realmente espectacular, tanto su estructura como todo lo que vas a ver allí.

This work was inaugurated in 1960 and after half a century of operation was closed to the public in 2010 to submit the entire system to a total reconstruction that lasted about six years, so the cable car that we can visit now is a new version, super modern, but of course, the mountain landscapes that surround it are still the same that captivated people over the years. I didn't know the old cable car but I had seen photos and clearly the improvement in the facilities was big.

Esta obra fue inaugurada en 1960 y tras medio siglo de funcionamiento fue cerrada al público en 2010 para someter todo el sistema a una reconstrucción total que duró unos seis años, así que el teleférico que podemos visitar ahora es una versión nueva, súper moderna, pero claro, los paisajes de montaña que lo rodean siguen siendo los mismos que cautivaron a la gente a través de los años. Yo no conocí el viejo teleférico pero sí había visto fotos y claramente la mejoría en las instalaciones fue grande.

Another change that was made was its name, before it was simply the Mérida cable car, since its reopening in 2016 its official name is Mukumbarí Cable Car System, an indigenous word meaning "place where the sun sleeps".

Otro de los cambios que se hicieron fue su nombre, antes era simplemente el teleférico de Mérida, desde su reapertura en 2016 su nombre oficial es Sistema de Teleféricos Mukumbarí, una palabra indígena que significa “lugar donde duerme el sol”.

When I arrived at Plaza de Las Heroínas, in downtown Mérida, where the base station, Barinitas, is located, I was excited and anxious, not only I was going to finally get to know this iconic place, I also had the mission to collect information to write the main article of a tourist magazine that was under my coordination. Fortunately I was accompanied by a professional photographer and I didn't have to do that job too, of course I took pictures, which I share in this publication, but in relaxed mode 😉.

Cuando llegué a la Plaza de Las Heroínas, en el centro de Mérida, donde se encuentra la estación base, Barinitas, estaba emocionada y ansiosa, no sólo iba a conocer por fin este icónico lugar, también tenía la misión de recolectar información para escribir el artículo principal de una revista turística que estaba bajo mi coordinación. Afortunadamente me acompañaba un fotógrafo profesional y no tenía que hacer ese trabajo también, claro que hice fotos, las que comparto en esta publicación, pero en modo relajado 😉.

Another good thing is that I didn't have to pay to take the cable car ride, days before we had requested permission to fulfill the journalistic assignment there and they let us pass for free. We boarded the cabin and began the adventure through the other four stations that the system has besides Barinitas: La Montaña, La Aguada, Loma Redonda and Pico Espejo with its 4,765 meters of altitude.

Otra cosa buena es que no tuve que pagar para hacer el recorrido en el teleférico, días antes habíamos solicitado el permiso para cumplir con la asignación periodística allí y nos dejaron pasar gratis. Abordamos la cabina y comenzó la aventura por las otras cuatro estaciones que tiene el sistema aparte de Barinitas: La Montaña, La Aguada, Loma Redonda y Pico Espejo con sus 4.765 metros de altura.

These cabins have a capacity for 40 people seated and 20 standing (the photographer and I were standing), and you don't feel the displacement at all, there is no turbulence.

Estas cabinas tienen capacidad para 40 personas sentadas y 20 de pie (el fotógrafo y yo fuimos parados), y no se siente para nada el desplazamiento, no hay turbulencias.

Through the windows of the cabins the cold air gradually seeps in, it is good to hydrate as you ascend to avoid moor sickness. The altitude reached at La Montaña station is 2,436 meters above sea level.

Por las ventanas de las cabinas se va colando poco a poco el aire frío, es bueno hidratarse a medida que se asciende para evitar el mal de páramo, la altura que se alcanza en la estación La Montaña es de 2.436 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

From here we have incredible views of Bolivar Peak, the highest in Venezuela (4,983 masl).

Por aquí aparecen las increíbles vistas hacia el Pico Bolívar, el más alto de Venezuela (4.983 msnm).

As in each of the five stations of this cable car system, at La Montaña there are options for visitors such as food, restrooms, playground, medical service and guides for hiking.

Como en cada una de las cinco estaciones de este sistema teleférico, en La Montaña hay opciones para los visitantes como comida, baños, parque infantil, servicio médico y guías para hacer algunas caminatas.

I went to enjoy the panoramic viewpoint "Ciudad de Merida" and took a walk to see the outside of the station, it must have been quite complicated to work on this construction, the cold and the altitude slows everything down.

Yo fui a disfrutar del mirador panorámico “Ciudad de Mérida” y di una vuelta para ver la parte externa de la estación, debió ser bastante complicado trabajar en esta construcción, el frío y la altura ralentizan todo.

I continued my ascent and took the cabin again to go to La Aguada station, on this trip the cold became intense. I was wearing a good jacket and had a scarf tucked away, well here I took it out and put it on.

Continué mi ascenso y tomé de nuevo la cabina para ir a la estación La Aguada, en este trayecto el frío se puso intenso. Yo llevaba una buena chaqueta y tenía una bufanda guardada, pues aquí la saqué y me la puse.

As you climb the landscape becomes more and more impressive, the Venezuelan Andes immediately conquer you with its combination of frailejon plants (Espeletia), streams, lagoons and peaks.

A medida que subes el paisaje es cada vez más impactante, los andes venezolanos te conquistan de inmediato con su combinación de plantas de frailejón (Espeletia), riachuelos, lagunas y picos.

La Aguada station is at 3,452 meters and its completely white structure makes you feel closer and closer to the snow. Perhaps many people when they think of Venezuela only visualize beaches and tropical scenery, but this country is so diverse and surprising that if you want snow, it also has it .

La estación La Aguada está a 3.452 metros y su estructura completamente blanca te hace sentirte cada vez más cerca de la nieve. Quizás mucha gente cuando piensa en Venezuela sólo visualiza playas y escenarios tropicales, pero este país es tan diverso y sorprendente que si quieres nieve, también la tiene.

In this station there are many activities that can be done, such as bird watching, several hiking trails, visiting a botanical garden, paragliding, relaxing at a lookout point, among others.

En esta estación hay muchas actividades que se pueden hacer, como observación de aves, varias rutas de senderismo, visitar un jardín botánico, volar en parapente, relajarse en un mirador, entre otras.

I made a few short walks here, as I was doing journalistic work I couldn't stop too much at each station. I kept moving forward and boarded the cab again to get to the fourth stop, called Loma Redonda. Already this is high mountain, 4,045 meters, and there are plenty of adventures to undertake, are offered: horseback riding, rock climbing, via ferrata, mountain biking, trails... I definitely want to go back to the cable car to do all that.

Hice unas caminatas cortas por aquí, como estaba haciendo un trabajo periodístico no podía detenerme demasiado en cada estación. Seguí avanzando y abordé nuevamente la cabina para llegar a la cuarta parada, llamada Loma Redonda. Ya esto es alta montaña, 4.045 metros, y hay un montón de aventuras por emprender, se ofrecen: paseos a caballo, escalada en roca, vías ferratas, ciclismo de montaña, senderos... Sin duda quiero volver al teleférico para hacer todo eso.

In the last part of the route the landscape becomes more rocky and abrupt, and between the mountains appear two spectacular lagoons called Los Anteojos, which are the result of melting snow.

En la última parte del recorrido el paisaje se vuelve más rocoso y abrupto, y entre las montañas aparecen dos espectaculares lagunas llamadas Los Anteojos, las cuales son producto del deshielo.

We almost reached Pico Espejo, the last station of the Mukumbarí cable car, and now the cold was creeping into the bones.

Ya casi llegamos a Pico Espejo, la última estación del teleférico Mukumbarí, ahora sí que el frío se colaba entre los huesos.

The day was cloudy and those pointed rocky mountains looked dramatically imposing.

El día estaba nublado y esas puntiagudas montañas rocosas se veían dramáticamente imponentes.

Surrounded by this scenery, we reached the climax of this ascent, at 4,765 meters at the Pico Espejo station. Although I already knew the snow, it was very exciting to see it again and especially to be in such an extraordinary place.

Rodeados de ese escenario llegamos al clímax de este ascenso, a los 4.765 metros de la estación Pico Espejo. Aunque ya conocía la nieve, fue muy emocionante verla de nuevo y sobre todo estar en un lugar tan extraordinario.

The spaces in the station are very large and heated. Here there are also places to eat and especially to have something to warm up, such as a delicious chocolate.

Los espacios de la estación son muy amplios y tenían calefacción. Aquí también hay lugares para comer y sobre todo tomarse algo para calentarse, como un rico chocolate.

Before going out on the walkway I took a look through the panoramic windows, it was quite foggy and snowy!

Antes de salir a la caminería eché un vistazo por las ventanas panorámicas, había bastante neblina ¡y nieve!

I went outside to feel what I was seeing through the window and the impact was total, both because of the intense cold and the beauty of everything around me.

Salí para sentir lo que estaba viendo por la ventana y el impacto fue total, tanto por el intenso frío como por la belleza de todo lo que me rodeaba.

At the end of this walkway there is a monument to La Virgen de Las Nieves (Virgin of the Snows), considered the patron saint of mountaineers.

Al final de esta caminería hay un monumento a La Virgen de Las Nieves, considerada como la patrona de los montañistas.

All of us out exploring around here were freezing, no doubt, but there was so much happiness and laughter in the air! And was magnified when it suddenly started to snow a little, what a thrill!

Todos los que salimos a explorar por aquí nos estábamos congelando, sin duda, ¡pero había tanta felicidad y risas en el ambiente! Y se magnificó cuando de repente comenzó a nevar un poco, ¡qué emoción!

From here there is also the possibility of outdoor activities, especially high mountain trekking.

Desde aquí también hay posibilidad de hacer actividades al aire libre, sobre todo trekking de alta montaña.

The Mérida cable car is considered the highest (4,765 masl) and longest in the world (12.5 km).

El teleférico de Mérida está considerado como el más alto (4.765 msnm) y largo del mundo (12,5 km de trayecto).

And it's not just about going from station to station to the top, it's a whole natural amusement park, if you want you can do activities at each stop.

Y además no se trata sólo de ir de estación en estación hasta la cima, es todo un parque de atracciones naturales, si quieres puedes hacer actividades en cada parada.
