Getting to know the Guayasamín House Museum and The Chapel of Man - The Ecuador diary / Conociendo la Casa Museo Guayasamín y La Capilla del Hombre - El diario de Ecuador

My fifth day in Quito, and my last for the time being, I chose to spend in relaxation mode, as I had expended a lot of energy the day before climbing a volcano, so it was a day to learn about the art of the famous Ecuadorian painter and illustrator Oswaldo Guayasamín.

Mi quinto día en Quito, y el último por el momento, elegí pasarlo en modo relajado, ya que el día anterior gasté bastante energía subiendo un volcán, así que fue una jornada para aprender sobre el arte del famoso pintor y dibujante ecuatoriano Oswaldo Guayasamín.

Mid-morning, I took a bus to the Bellavista area, where the Guayasamín House Museum and La Capilla del Hombre (The Chapel of Man) are located. When I go to any city or town, I always try to visit one of its museums, and reading my travel guide, this was one of the ones that seemed most interesting to me.

A media mañana, tomé un autobús hacia la zona de Bellavista, donde se encuentran la Casa Museo Guayasamín y La Capilla del Hombre. Cuando visito cualquier ciudad o pueblo intento siempre ir a alguno de sus museos, y leyendo mi guía de viaje, este fue uno de los que me pareció más interesante.

The location of this house is very attractive, It is called Guangüiltagua Hill and has spectacular views of part of the city and the Pichincha volcano. In addition, the architecture and gardens of the museum create an ideal environment for contemplating art.

El lugar donde se encuentra esta casa es muy atractivo, se llama loma de Guangüiltagua y tiene una vista espectacular de parte de la ciudad y el volcán Pichincha. Además, la arquitectura y los jardines del museo crean un ambiente ideal para la contemplación del arte.

Oswaldo Guayasamín is one of Ecuador's most important contemporary artists. An exponent of indigenism in painting, his works starkly reflect social issues, giving visibility to the indigenous peoples of Latin America.

Oswaldo Guayasamín es uno de los artistas contemporáneos más importantes de Ecuador. Exponente del indigenismo en la pintura, sus obras reflejan de manera cruda los problemas sociales, dando visibilidad a los pueblos indígenas de América Latina.

Guayasamín lived in this house, built between 1976 and 1979, until his death. In designing it, the artist wanted not only a place to live and paint without space restrictions, but also a place that could later be converted into a museum. Its architecture is a blend of Andean and Hispanic identity. My favourite part of the tour of the house was his painting studio.

En esta casa, construida entre 1976 y 1979, Guayasamín vivió hasta su muerte. En su concepción, el artista quería tener no sólo un lugar para vivir y poder pintar sin restricciones de espacio, sino también que luego pudiera ser convertida en un museo. Su arquitectura es una mezcla de la identidad andina e hispana. Mi parte favorita del recorrido de la casa fue su estudio de pintura.

Then, when I went out into the garden, I saw a tree that stood out, a huge pine tree. This pine tree was planted by the painter, whose wish was that when he died, his remains would be laid to rest under the tree. His family later named it the “Tree of Life”.

Luego, al salir al jardín, vi un árbol que destacaba, un enorme pino. Este pino fue sembrado por el pintor, siendo su voluntad que cuando muriera, sus restos se depositaran bajo el árbol. Su familia lo llamó luego el “Árbol de la Vida".

After visiting the House Museum, I went to see The Chapel of Man, which is also located there, down some stairs. The architecture of this building is very striking, and is inspired by the ancient constructions of the indigenous peoples of this region.

Después de visitar la Casa Museo, fui a conocer La Capilla del Hombre, que se encuentra también allí, bajando unas escaleras. La arquitectura de esta edificación es muy llamativa, y está inspirada en las antiguas construcciones de los pueblos indígenas de esta región.

This artistic project by Maestro Guayasamín was conceived in 1985 with the aim of creating a cultural centre. In 1989, it was presented to UNESCO to obtain funding, and construction began in 1996. Contributions came from Guayasamín himself and from institutions in several countries: Venezuela, Chile, Bolivia, and Ecuador. Singers and other painters also collaborated by organising fundraising events. The first phase was inaugurated in November 2002.

Este proyecto artístico del Maestro Guayasamín fue concebido en 1985, con el objetivo de que fuera un centro cultural. En 1989 fue presentado a la Unesco para conseguir financiamiento y en 1996 se inició su construcción. Los aportes fueron del propio Guayasamín y de instituciones de varios países: Venezuela, Chile, Bolivia y Ecuador. También colaboraron cantantes y otros pintores con la realización de eventos para recolectar fondos. En noviembre de 2002 se inauguró la primera fase.

The Chapel of Man has two floors; from the outside it might not seem like much, but once inside the space is quite large. The Contemporary Hall is on the ground floor, and the Pre-Hispanic Hall is in the basement.

La Capilla del Hombre tiene dos plantas; por fuera quizás no se note mucho, pero al entrar el espacio es bastante grande. En la planta baja está la Sala Contemporánea y en el Subsuelo está la Sala Prehispánica.

I would have liked to take many more photos of the interior, but the lighting was dim and my camera couldn't capture clear shots. However, in these works I'm sharing, you can see a bit of Guayasamín's style and his message: agony, cultural resistance, social reflection...

Me hubiese gustado tomar muchas más fotos del interior, pero la iluminación era tenue y mi cámara no lograba captar tomas nítidas. Sin embargo, en estas obras que comparto, pueden ver un poco del estilo de Guayasamín y su mensaje: agonía, resistencia cultural, reflexión social...

In the gardens of this house there is also an exhibition of replicas of pre-Columbian art. Guayasamín was also a great collector of these kinds of pieces, as well as colonial and contemporary Ecuadorian art.

En los jardines de esta casa hay también una exhibición de réplicas de arte precolombino. Guayasamín era también un gran coleccionista de este tipo de piezas, de arte colonial y contemporáneo de Ecuador.
