Exploring Manta and Ciudad Alfaro in Montecristi - The Ecuador diary / Descubriendo Manta y Ciudad Alfaro en Montecristi - El diario de Ecuador

I was already in the final stretch of my trip through Ecuador, and after a short stay in Montañita, I headed to another coastal town, the city of Manta. I stayed there for a couple of days as well and got to see some interesting places, which I’ll show you below. I arrived by bus at noon, found an affordable hotel near the terminal, and immediately went for a walk around the area, near the sea.

Ya estaba en el tramo final de mi viaje por Ecuador, y después de una corta estadía en Montañita, seguí hacia otro punto costero, la ciudad de Manta. Allí también me quedé un par de días y pude conocer algunos lugares interesantes que les muestro a continuación. Llegué en autobús al mediodía, encontré un hotel económico cerca del terminal e inmediatamente salí a caminar por ahí, cerca del mar.

Manta is a bustling city, and its economy is based on the tuna fishing industry. As I was walking along the boardwalk, I was surprised to see a large statue there: the Tuna Monument. As you can see, the sky was quite cloudy, so the fish’s colors look a bit dull.

Manta es una ciudad muy activa, y su economía se basa en la industria pesquera del atún. Cuando iba caminando por el malecón, me sorprendí al ver una gran estatua allí: el Monumento al Atún. Como ven, el cielo estaba bastante nublado, así que los colores del pez se ven algo opacos.

I had checked my travel guide before leaving and saw that the Central Bank Museum was located along the boardwalk, that has a large collection of artifacts from the Manteña culture, so I went to visit it. There are excellent views of the beach from its headquarters.

Había consultado mi guía de viaje antes de salir y vi que por el malecón estaba el Museo del Banco Central, que tiene una gran colección de piezas de la cultura Manteña, así que fui a visitarlo. Desde su sede hay unas excelentes vistas de la playa.

I read in the exhibition hall that between 500 and 1526 AD, this area was settled by the Manteña culture, indigenous people who called this place Jocay, which means “house of the fish.” In the area around Manta, there are several ruins of temples and dwellings where many relics they left behind have been found. There were so many interesting pieces in the museum that I got distracted and only took one photo.

Leí en la sala que entre los años 500 y 1526 d. C., esta zona fue asentamiento de la cultura Manteña, aborígenes que llamaban Jocay a este lugar, que significa “casa de los peces”. En los alrededores de Manta hay varias ruinas de templos y viviendas donde se han encontrado muchas reliquias que dejaron. Había tantas piezas interesantes en el museo, que me distraje y sólo tomé una foto.

Then I went for a walk around the area and looked for a place to eat, it was already around 3:30 in the afternoon. Along the boardwalk and the beaches, there are plenty of dining options, and of course, seafood takes center stage on the menu.

Luego me fui a pasear por ahí, y a buscar un lugar para comer, ya eran como las 3:30 de la tarde. Por el malecón y las playas hay muchísimas opciones gastronómicas, por supuesto que los frutos del mar son los protagonistas de los platos.

The next day, I decided to go to Montecristi, a town known for its crafts located 12 km from Manta. That’s where Ecuador’s most famous hats are made, the toquilla straw or Panama hats I mentioned in a previous post.

Al día siguiente decidí ir a Montecristi, un pueblo artesano que está a 12 Km de Manta. Allí se fabrican los sombreros más famosos de Ecuador, los de paja toquilla o Panamá, de los que hablé en una publicación anterior.

I visited several shops and craft workshops in downtown Montecristi. This is where the world’s finest toquilla straw hats are made. Since I had already bought one in Cuenca, I didn’t buy anything here.

Visité varias tiendas y talleres de artesanía en el centro de Montecristi. Es aquí donde se hacen los mejores sombreros de paja toquilla del mundo. Como ya me había comprado uno en Cuenca, no me llevé nada de aquí.

Nearby, a beautiful building caught my eye, so I went over to take a look. It turned out to be the Eloy Alfaro House Museum, the birthplace of this important Ecuadorian general, where visitors can learn about his life and view an exhibition of his personal belongings, photos, and more.

Cerca de allí me llamó la atención una bonita edificación y me acerqué. Se trataba de la Casa Museo Eloy Alfaro, lugar donde nació este importante general ecuatoriano y donde se puede conocer sobre su vida y ver una exhibición de sus objetos personales, fotos, etc.

The brochure they gave me included a brief profile of Eloy Alfaro: “A former president of the Republic and a driving force behind liberalism in Ecuador, he is remembered for his greatest legacy: the railroad that would link the coast with the highlands, more than a century ago.”

En el folleto que me dieron había una breve reseña sobre Eloy Alfaro: “Ex presidente de la República y motor del Liberalismo en Ecuador, es recordado por su más grande legado, el ferrocarril que uniría la costa con la sierra, hace ya más de un siglo”.

This house was built by Alfaro's father in 1838.

Esta casa fue construida por el padre de Alfaro en 1838.

I didn't know the story behind this general, but someone recommended that I visit the Ciudad Alfaro Civic Center on Montecristi Hill, and since I had nothing else planned other than wandering around town, I walked over there.

Yo no conocía la historia de este general, pero me recomendaron visitar el Centro Cívico Ciudad Alfaro, en el cerro Montecristi, y como no tenía otro plan más que andar por este pueblo, me fui caminando hasta allá.

There is a mausoleum containing the ashes of Eloy Alfaro, and you can learn more about Ecuador’s political history. I found the architecture of this place very appealing.

Allí está un mausoleo con las cenizas de Eloy Alfaro y se puede conocer más sobre la historia política de Ecuador. La arquitectura de este lugar me pareció muy atractiva.

The Ciudad Alfaro Civic Center not only pays tribute to him, but also serves as a cultural center and museum.

El Centro Cívico Ciudad Alfaro no sólo le rinde homenaje a él, es también centro cultural y museo.

Eloy Alfaro served two terms as president of Ecuador, from 1895 to 1901 and from 1906 to 1911. Inspired by the French Revolution and its motto of “liberty, equality, and fraternity,” he fought for a more just and free country.

Eloy Alfaro fue dos veces presidente de Ecuador, de 1895 a 1901 y de 1906 a 1911. Inspirado por la Revolución Francesa y su lema de “libertad, igualad y fraternidad”, luchó por un país más justo y libre.

Without a doubt, the most impressive part of this place is when you enter the mausoleum, where there is a six-meter-tall statue of Alfaro and a series of artworks surrounding it that depict his struggle.

Sin duda lo más impresionante de este lugar es cuando entras al mausoleo, donde hay una estatua de Alfaro que mide seis metros y una serie de obras artísticas que lo rodean representando su lucha.

I learned many interesting things on this tour, such as the fact that Alfaro is considered “the great builder of modern 20th-century Ecuador” because, among other things, he was the first president to appoint a woman to a public office, he created a railway network to connect the entire country, and his Constitution enshrined equality, freedom of religion, and secularism in education, while also abolishing the death penalty.

Leí muchas cosas interesantes en este recorrido, como por ejemplo, que Alfaro es considerado como “el gran constructor del Ecuador moderno del siglo XX”, porque, entre otras cosas, fue el primer presidente en colocar a una mujer al frente de un cargo público, creó la red de ferrocarriles para conectar todo el país, y su Constitución proclamó la igualdad, la libertad de cultos, el laicismo en la educación y derogó la pena de muerte.

I also learned that his death was horrific. Ousted from power by betrayals, he was later murdered and burned in the streets of Quito alongside his brother and other allies of his cause.

También supe que su muerte fue horrible. Sacado del poder por traiciones, fue luego asesinado y quemado en las calles de Quito junto a su hermano y otros aliados de su causa.

Although I hadn't originally planned to visit Ciudad Alfaro, I'm glad I took the recommendation and went there. I was surprised by both the place and the life story of this important figure in Ecuadorian politics. It's always good to learn a little history, don't you think?

Aunque en un principio no iba con la intención de conocer Ciudad Alfaro, me alegro de haber aceptado esta recomendación y haber ido hasta allá. Fue una sorpresa para mí tanto el lugar como la biografía de este importante personaje de la política ecuatoriana. Siempre es positivo conocer algo de historia, ¿no creen?
