One of the things I always look for on my travels is contact with nature. So, after visiting several places in Quito and its surroundings during my first two days in this country, I was already longing to be in a non-urban landscape.

Una de las cosas que siempre busco en mis viajes es el contacto con la naturaleza. Por eso, después de visitar varios lugares en Quito y sus alrededores durante mis dos primeros días en este país, ya estaba deseando estar en un paisaje no urbano.

On my third day of travelling, I visited La Mitad del Mundo in the morning, and in the afternoon I went to the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve, which is very close by bus.

En mi tercer día de viaje, conocí La Mitad del Mundo en la mañana, y en la tarde fui a la Reserva Geobotánica Pululahua, que está muy cerca en autobús.

The bus drops you off at a point more or less nearby, and from there the climb to the crater begins. Seeing those mountains and the blue sky, I was eager to start the walk and take lots of photos.

El autobús te deja en un punto más o menos cercano, y desde allí comienza la subida hacia el cráter. Al ver esas montañas y el cielo azul, estaba ansiosa por comenzar la caminata y tomar muchas fotos.

I don't remember how many kilometres it was to get there, but it took me just over an hour. I took my time to admire the landscape full of attractive mountains, small valleys, lots of greenery and birds.

No recuerdo cuántos kilómetros había hasta allí, pero tardé poco más de una hora. Me tomé mi tiempo para admirar el paisaje lleno de atractivas montañas, pequeños valles, mucha vegetación y pájaros.

One thing worth noting is that Ecuador is a land of volcanoes. According to what I have read, there are 84 on the mainland and 7 in the island region, although 27 are potentially active.

Algo que hay que destacar es que Ecuador es tierra de volcanes. Según leí tiene 84 a nivel continental y 7 en su región insular, aunque potencialmente activos hay 27.

It wasn't the first time I had visited a volcano, I had seen some in other countries, but I had never been to one in the Andes Mountains. The 3,383 hectares of Pululahua were first designated a National Park in 1966, and in 1978 the area was declared a Geobotanical Reserve with the aim of protecting its rich geological and biological diversity.

No era la primera vez que visitaba un volcán, había conocido algunos en otros países, pero nunca había estado en uno de la cordillera de los Andes. Las 3383 hectáreas del Pululahua fueron primero Parque Nacional, en 1966, y en 1978 el área fue declarada Reserva Geobotánica con el objetivo de proteger su rica diversidad geológica y biológica.

Although its last eruption was approximately 2,500 years ago, this volcano is considered potentially active.

Aunque su última erupción fue hace aproximadamente 2500 años, este volcán está considerado como potencialmente activo.

As I walked towards the crater, I noticed a striking peak where rocks had fallen away. I read that there were three hills or volcanic domes in this reserve: Pondoña, El Chivo and Pan de Azúcar, but I don't know if the one I show below was one of them.

Mientras iba caminando hacia el cráter, me fijé en un llamativo pico en el cual se veía desprendimiento de rocas. Leí que en esta reserva había tres cerros o domos volcánicos: Pondoña, El Chivo y Pan de Azúcar, pero no sé si este que muestro a continuación era uno de ellos.

Before reaching the Ventanillas Viewpoint, which provides access to the Pululahua crater, I was surprised to see a kind of castle in the landscape. It was the Temple of the Sun, a tourist attraction that recreates an Inca temple, but I didn't ask how much the entrance fee was. It was around 4:00 pm, and I preferred to continue on my way to the volcano.

Antes de llegar al Mirador de Ventanillas, por donde se accede al cráter del Pululahua, me sorprendió una especie de castillo en el paisaje. Era el Templo del Sol, una atracción turística que recrea un templo inca, pero no pregunté cuánto costaba la entrada. Eran como las 4:00 pm y preferí seguir mi camino hacia el volcán.

From the viewpoint, the landscape is simply spectacular. It was quite foggy, but you could still see most of the enormous crater.

Desde el mirador, el paisaje es sencillamente espectacular. Había bastante neblina, pero aún así se podía ver gran parte del enorme cráter.

And speaking of fog, it has a lot to do with the name of this volcano. Pululahua means “water cloud” in the Quechua language.

Y hablando de la neblina, tiene mucho que ver con el nombre de este volcán. Pululahua significa "nube de agua" en lengua quechua.

One of the unique features of this volcano is that it is one of only two in the world that is inhabited (the other is in Japan). In its crater, there is a community that lives off agriculture, livestock farming, and tourism.

Una de las particularidades de este volcán es que es uno de los dos en el mundo que están habitados (el otro se encuentra en Japón). En su cráter hay una comunidad que vive de la agricultura, la ganadería y el turismo.

The crater of the Pululahua volcano is about 400 metres deep and its caldera measures about 4 km in diameter. To reach the community that lives there, the trail was less than 2 km long, but the descent was quite steep.

El cráter del volcán Pululahua tiene unos 400 metros de profundidad y su caldera mide unos 4 km de diámetro. Para llegar hasta la comunidad que vive allí el sendero era de menos de 2 km, pero el descenso era bastante abrupto.

I walked downhill with other people who were there. I don't know how far I went, but I walked for about half an hour. At one point, I looked at my watch and it was after 5:30 pm, so I decided not to go all the way down because it would be too late to get back to the city. Although I had felt safe during my first few days in Quito, I preferred to avoid walking alone at night.

Fui bajando junto a otras personas que estaban allí. No sé cuánto avancé, pero caminé como media hora. En un punto miré el reloj y eran más de las 5:30 pm, entonces decidí no llegar hasta abajo porque se me haría tarde para volver a la ciudad. Aunque me había sentido segura en mis primeros días en Quito, preferí evitar andar sola de noche.

And that was my first encounter with Ecuadorian nature. I really enjoyed the energy and landscapes of the Pululahua volcano. What did you think of this place?
