[ENG-ESP] An analogical trip around Tenerife / Un viaje analógico por Tenerife

When I started to travel on my own, I also started to photograph more seriously, let's say I wanted to make a good record of my experiences, both to show them to my family and friends and to be able to later, as time went by, remember the moments better.

Cuando comencé a viajar por mi cuenta, comencé también a fotografiar más seriamente, digamos que quería hacer un buen registro de mis experiencias, tanto para mostrárselas a mi familia y amigos como para poder después, con el paso del tiempo, recordar mejor los momentos.

In this post I share with you some of the shots I took on the island of Tenerife, the first trip abroad that I paid for myself thanks to what was also my first job in my profession: social communication, this was a few years ago.

En esta publicación comparto con ustedes algunas de las tomas que hice en la isla de Tenerife, el primer viaje al extranjero que pagué yo misma gracias al que también fue mi primer trabajo ejerciendo mi profesión: comunicación social, de esto hace ya unos años.

Digital cameras had long since burst onto the market, but I still didn't have one, so these photos you see here were taken with a small analog camera. I don't remember how many rolls of film I used but in total I took almost 200 photos during the 20 days I was there.

Hacía rato que las cámaras digitales habían irrumpido en el mercado, pero yo aún no tenía una, así que estas fotos que ven fueron hechas con una pequeña cámara analógica. No recuerdo cuántos rollos de película usé pero en total tomé casi 200 fotos durante los 20 días que estuve allí.

Shortly after, in 2007, I bought my first digital camera and I realized that 200 photos were nothing, in the first trip I made with it I took many more. Also you didn't have to worry about running out of film, if the memory was full you could simply delete a shot or buy an additional memory.

Poco después, en el año 2007, compré mi primera cámara digital y me di cuenta que 200 fotos no eran nada, en el primer viaje que hice con ella tomé muchísimas más. Además no había que preocuparse de que se te acabara el rollo de película, si la memoria se llenaba simplemente podías borrar alguna toma o comprar una memoria adicional.

It is clear that technology brought good things, but perhaps it also made the act of photographing less premeditated. What I mean is that I thought more carefully about what I wanted to immortalize when I knew how many images I had available on the roll.

Está claro que la tecnología trajo cosas buenas pero también quizás volvió el acto de fotografiar en algo menos premeditado. Lo que quiero decir es que yo pensaba con más detenimiento lo que quería inmortalizar cuando sabía cuántas imágenes tenía disponibles en el rollo.

Well, it has also made us save more money, we don't have to buy rolls of film or have our photos developed.

And what about the image quality? Looking at these files I notice the difference between my analog and digital photos.

But although we can now get sharper, more colorful photos, etc., the texture of analog photos has its charm, that coarse grain in some or the faint colors of others can only be obtained today with the filters available in cell phones or apps, the "vintage effect", as they call it.

I made this trip to visit my best friend from high school, who moved to Tenerife when we finished 9th grade. Her parents were from there and decided to go back to their country, when I went I hadn't seen her for about 10 years. I remember that she did have a digital camera and she quickly sent me the pictures by email, while I took a while to send her mine because I had to find a place to scan them.

Este viaje lo hice para visitar a mi mejor amiga del bachillerato, quien se mudó para Tenerife cuando terminamos 9no grado. Sus padres eran de allá y decidieron volver a su país, cuando fui tenía como 10 años sin verla. Recuerdo que ella sí tenía una cámara digital y luego me envió rápido las fotos por correo electrónico, mientras que yo me tardé en enviarle las mías porque debía conseguir dónde escanearlas.

There are photos that have stains in some parts, if you look closely you will detect them, most of them are due to carelessness in the development, not all the studios did a good job. Of course, with the digital tools we have now we can retouch them, but I left these originals for you to see.

Hay fotos que presentan manchas en algunas partes, si se fijan bien las detectarán, la mayoría son por descuido en el revelado, no todos los estudios hacían un buen trabajo. Claro, con las herramientas digitales que tenemos ahora las podemos retocar, pero estas las dejé originales para que las vean.

The simple analog cameras like the one I used here, didn't have landscape, portrait, night, motion, or any of those options that exist now to capture better photos, so you had to take care of the angles, the light and all those things that can ruin a shot. Sometimes you succeeded, sometimes you didn't, and you could only know it when you developed them.

Las cámaras analógicas sencillas como la que yo usé aquí, tampoco tenían modo paisaje, retrato, nocturno, en movimiento, ni ninguna de todas esas opciones que existen ahora para capturar mejores fotos, entonces había que cuidar los ángulos, la luz y todas esas cosas que nos pueden arruinar una toma. A veces se lograba, otras no, y sólo lo podías saber al revelarlas.

One of the things I learned with analog photography is that flash should almost never be used hahaha, well in very necessary cases. For example, in the photos below, taken when I visited an extraordinary place, the volcano El Teide, the day was cloudy and I chose to activate the flash. Many of the shots came out with too much white light, I burned them, only a few were saved.

Una de las cosas que aprendí con la fotografía analógica es que el flash no se debe usar casi nunca jajaja, bueno en casos muy necesarios. Por ejemplo, en las fotos a continuación, tomadas cuando visité un extraordinario lugar, el volcán El Teide, el día estaba nublado y opté por activar el flash. Muchas de las tomas salieron con demasiada luz blanca, las quemé, sólo se salvaron unas pocas.

Another thing to mention is the space, I have all these photos in small albums, stored at the top of the closet. Although I've scanned them to have them in digital, I haven't thrown them away, I love having physical photos too, the old fashioned way 😉.

Otra de las cosas a mencionar es el espacio, todas estas fotos las tengo en pequeños álbumes, guardadas en la parte alta del closet. Aunque las he escaneado para tenerlas en digital, no las he desechado, me encanta tener también fotos en físico, a la antigua 😉.

But without a doubt digital photography saves us space, and this blockchain also allows me to preserve these images forever, if I lose them, they will always be here on my blog.

Pero sin duda la fotografía digital nos ahorra espacio, y esta blockchain me permite además preservar estas imágenes para siempre, si las pierdo, siempre estarán aquí en mi blog.

When I started taking pictures I did it as a hobby, but then in college I had the opportunity to study this art and acquire the basic knowledge to do it better.

Cuando comencé a hacer fotos lo hacía por hobby, pero luego en la universidad tuve la oportunidad de estudiar este arte y adquirir los conocimientos elementales para hacerlo mejor.

From this analog trip around Tenerife until now I think I have evolved, not only because of the technology, especially in the fact of telling better my experiences with images, now, if these photos can be considered good or not, it's another story 😂.

Desde este viaje analógico por Tenerife hasta ahora creo que he evolucionado, no sólo por la tecnología, sobre todo en el hecho de contar mejor mis experiencias con imágenes, ahora, si estas fotos pueden ser consideradas buenas o no, ya es otra historia 😂.
