El Consejo - El Conde in Aragua (Venezuela), a route through agricultural hamlets of great beauty / El Consejo - El Conde en Aragua (Venezuela), una ruta por caseríos agrícolas de gran belleza

A vice? Going on unknown roads and getting to unimaginable places. Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I don't hesitate, and that's what I did again last Sunday.

¿Un vicio? Ir por caminos desconocidos y llegar a lugares inimaginables. Cada vez que se presenta la oportunidad, no lo dudo, y eso hice nuevamente el domingo pasado.

I saw the call of a hiking group on social networks for a walk from the town of El Consejo to El Conde sector, both in Aragua state (Venezuela), and I was very interested in the route because several years ago I briefly visited that area for work and was impressed by its beauty.

Vi la convocatoria de un grupo senderista por redes sociales para una caminata desde la población de El Consejo hasta el sector El Conde, ambos en el estado Aragua (Venezuela), y me interesó mucho la ruta porque hace varios años visité brevemente esa zona por trabajo y me impresionó su belleza.

The departure time for the walk was 7:00 am, but punctuality is not usually taken very seriously around here, so it started at 7:50 am because the organizers were waiting for a truck which is the one that would go ahead of everyone. The distance between El Consejo and El Conde is about 10 km.

La hora de salida de la caminata era a las 7:00 am, pero la puntualidad no suele tomarse muy en serio por aquí, así que comenzó a las 7:50 am porque los organizadores estaban esperando un camión que es el que iría delante de todos. La distancia entre El Consejo y El Conde es de unos 10 Km.

I went with my sister and there we met several friends. We walked along the main street of El Consejo, a town known mainly because its lands are home to the Santa Teresa rum producing hacienda.

Fui con mi hermana y allá nos encontramos a varios amigos. Caminamos por la calle principal de El Consejo, un pueblo conocido sobre todo porque en sus tierras está la hacienda productora de ron Santa Teresa.

Since it was Sunday and still early in the morning, there was hardly anyone on the street, and those that were there looked at us with curiosity.

Como era domingo y aún temprano, no había casi nadie en la calle, y los que había nos miraban con curiosidad.

We arrived almost at the end of El Consejo and there is a detour to the left, where we got in, is the way to go to several hamlets, including our goal: El Conde.

Llegamos casi al final de El Consejo y allí hay un desvío a la izquierda, por donde nos metimos, es la vía para ir a varios caseríos agrícolas, entre ellos nuestra meta: El Conde.

At first you see many houses and plantations along the side of the road, then they disperse and one or another appears in the landscape.

Al principio se ven muchas casas y plantaciones al lado del camino, luego se van dispersando y aparece una que otra en el paisaje.

We were lucky because we had a clear day, at this time of the year we are in the middle of the rainy season in Venezuela. At least if it rained we were not going to get muddy, this route is paved.

Tuvimos suerte porque nos tocó un día despejado, en esta época estamos en pleno período de lluvias en Venezuela. Al menos si llovía no nos íbamos a llenar de barro, esta ruta es por vía asfaltada.

The splendor of this area unfolded before us when we had about half an hour walking, we passed through a part where there are tall trees and then the landscape opened up giving us spectacular views of the valley, the river and the mountains. The rain has made everything super lush and extra green.

El esplendor de esta zona se desplegó ante nosotros cuando teníamos como media hora caminando, pasamos por una parte donde hay árboles altos y luego el paisaje se abrió regalándonos unas vistas espectaculares del valle, el río y las montañas. La lluvia ha puesto todo súper frondoso y extra verde.

What will it be like to have a house around here? The countryside is another system, people live more simply and walk more quietly, but also farther away from the services and amenities offered by the city, although if you don't know them or are not used to them you will not even care.

¿Cómo será tener una casa por aquí? El campo es otro sistema, la gente vive de forma más sencilla y anda más tranquila, pero también más alejada de los servicios y las comodidades que ofrece la ciudad, aunque si no las conoces o no estás acostumbrada a ellas seguro que ni te importa.

There is little vehicular traffic around here and most people travel on motorcycles. Was this poor snake run over? Maybe it came out of the river near the road or was on its way there to drink water. There must be a lot of wildlife in all these mountains.

Hay poco tránsito vehicular por aquí y la mayoría de las personas se trasladan en motos. ¿Esta pobre serpiente habrá sido arrollada? Quizás salió del río que está cerca de la vía o iba hacia allá a tomar agua. Debe haber mucha fauna en todas estas montañas.

As you go along, you can see that almost all the land is productive, whether it is the large extensions of the haciendas in the valleys or the conucos (small parcels) in the mountains. Many crops are produced here: peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, bananas, among others.

Al ir avanzando observas que casi todas las tierras están productivas, ya sean las grandes extensiones que poseen las haciendas en los valles o los conucos en las montañas. Aquí se producen muchos rubros: pimentón, tomate, berenjenas, cambures, entre otros.

This road has few elevations, it is mostly flat, so the hike is not difficult, we were relaxed and chatting.

Esta vía tiene pocas elevaciones, es en su mayoría plana, entonces la caminata no presenta dificultad, íbamos relajados conversando.

We arrived at a sector with several houses, some stores, a church, if I remember correctly it is called El Peñón.

Llegamos a un sector con varias casas, algunos comercios, una iglesia, si mal no recuerdo se llama El Peñón.

At this point it was just after 9:00 a.m. and the sun was already making us sweat a little.

En este punto eran poco más de las 9:00 de la mañana y el sol ya nos estaba haciendo sudar un poco.

But there are many shady spots, so the heat didn't affect us as much. Around here some houses started to appear on the hilly side.

Pero hay muchas partes con sombra, así que el calor no nos afectaba tanto. Por aquí comenzaron a aparecer algunas casas en el lado montañoso.

And on the other side? The scenery looked spectacular in that light.

¿Y del otro lado? El paisaje se veía espectacular con esa luz.

The presence of more and more houses on one side of the road announced that we were already close to another populated area.

La presencia de cada vez más casas a un lado de la vía nos anunciaba que ya estábamos cerca de otro sector poblado.

We arrived at Quebrada Seca, here there are many houses, school, church, stores and ambulatory, I found it a very nice place because the houses looked well kept and with flowers in their gardens. As we passed through the main street the people there looked at us with curiosity, not many visitors must come here.

Llegamos a Quebrada Seca, aquí hay muchas viviendas, escuela, iglesia, comercios y ambulatorio, me pareció un lugar muy agradable porque las casas se veían bien cuidadas y con flores en sus jardines. Al pasar por la calle principal la gente de allí nos miraba con curiosidad, no deben venir muchos visitantes por aquí.

At this point we were already on the final stretch of the route, the road gets narrower here.

En este punto ya estábamos transitando por el tramo final de la ruta, la carretera se pone más angosta aquí.

A few meters ahead we came across an old house, it was closed. I remember years ago when I came to this area for work, I came here. At that time the place was a store selling basic things, but obviously it must have a long history, it's a pity it has no information plaque.

Unos metros más adelante nos topamos con una casa antigua, estaba cerrada. Recuerdo que hace años cuando vine a esta zona por trabajo, llegué hasta aquí. En ese momento el lugar era una bodega que vendía cosas básicas, pero obviamente debe tener una larga historia, es una lástima que no tenga ninguna placa informativa.

In front of it is an abandoned "bolas criollas" court, a traditional Venezuelan sport.

Frente a ella está una cancha abandonada de bolas criollas, este es un deporte tradicional de Venezuela.

We walk a few more minutes and reach our goal, there at the end of the sector El Conde ends the paved road. On the right side runs the Tuy River and there is a spa known as Las Cocuizas, with some facilities for visitors.

Caminamos unos minutos más y llegamos a nuestra meta, allí al final del sector El Conde termina la vía asfaltada. Del lado derecho circula el río Tuy y está un balneario conocido como Las Cocuizas, con algunas instalaciones para los visitantes.

In front of the spa is the entrance to Hacienda Buen Paso, located in a beautiful natural environment, for me it was a surprise, I didn't know of its existence.

Frente al balneario está la entrada a la Hacienda Buen Paso, ubicada entre un bellísimo entorno natural, para mí fue una sorpresa, no sabía de su existencia.

Although we had walked 10 km, curiosity overcame tiredness and after sitting down for a few minutes to eat something, many of us went to explore the hacienda, taking advantage of the fact that it was not forbidden to enter.

Aunque habíamos caminado 10 Km, la curiosidad pudo más que el cansancio y luego de sentarnos unos minutos a comer algo, muchos fuimos a explorar la hacienda aprovechando que no estaba prohibido entrar.

To get to the old house that can be seen in the distance, you climb a little up the hill, on the way you will find an abandoned sugar mill. In the valleys of the Aragua state are abundant, sugar cane and its derivatives is a crop that has been present since colonial times.

Para llegar a la vieja casona que se ve a lo lejos se sube un poco por el cerro, en el camino te encuentras con un trapiche abandonado. En los valles del estado Aragua abundan, la caña de azúcar y sus derivados es un cultivo que ha estado presente desde la época de la colonia.

There was no information there about the hacienda, a lady from the group told us that she came here for parties and cultural events, since some years ago there was an inn, a restaurant, swimming pool and other services for visitors, but obviously this place had more history.

No había ninguna información allí sobre la hacienda, una señora del grupo nos dijo que ella venía para acá a fiestas y eventos culturales, ya que hace algunos años funcionaba aquí una posada, un restaurante, piscina y otros servicios para los visitantes, pero obviamente este lugar tenía más historia.

And I found out later on the Internet, according to the official chronicler of this municipality, José Javier Durán, in his blog, this sugar mill has been there since the end of the 16th century. Throughout the years it passed through several hands: "...at the time it was owned by Don Antonio Mosquera and then it was known as the hacienda 'Nuestra Señora de Buen Paso', at the beginning of the 20th century it was owned by the Mier y Terán family and in the middle of the same century it was acquired by the Larraín family, at which time it stopped being Buen Paso to bear the name and coat of arms of the Marquis of Torre Casa, since it is said that at some point it was owned by him." Y lo averigüé después en Internet, según reseña en su blog el cronista oficial de este municipio, José Javier Durán, este ingenio azucarero está allí desde finales del siglo XVI. A lo largo de los años pasó por varias manos: “…en su momento fue propiedad de Don Antonio Mosquera y luego fue conocida como la hacienda ‘Nuestra señora de Buen Paso’, a comienzos del siglo XX tuvo como dueños a la familia Mier y Terán y a mediados del mismo siglo fue adquirida por la familia Larraín, momento en el cual dejo de ser Buen Paso para llevar el nombre y escudo de armas del Marqués de Torre Casa, ya que se comenta que en algún momento fue propiedad de él.” Fuente

In the early 2000s, this property was taken over by the State and converted into an agricultural production unit. From the old house, which currently looks somewhat abandoned, there is a good panoramic view of the whole place.

A principios de los años 2000 esta propiedad pasó a ser del Estado y se convirtió en una unidad de producción agrícola. Desde la vieja casona, que actualmente luce algo abandonada, se tiene una buena panorámica de todo el lugar.

In the back there is a large patio and a beautiful fountain.

En la parte de atrás hay un amplio patio y una bonita fuente.

Then there are some mysterious stairs decorated with tiles, of course we climb them and discover a house that is the one that functioned as a restaurant, and an abandoned pool.

Luego hay unas misteriosas escaleras decoradas con azulejos, por supuesto las subimos y descubrimos una casa que es la que funcionaba como restaurante, y una piscina abandonada.

Then we returned to the entrance of the hacienda, where the organizers were holding an exercise contest and dance therapy for those who wanted to participate.

Luego regresamos a la entrada de la hacienda, los organizadores estaban haciendo un concurso de ejercicios y bailoterapia para los que quisieran participar.

A cute little dog accompanied us there for a while, we gave her some food.

Una linda perrita nos acompañó un rato allí, le dimos algunas cosas de comer.

Some people bathed in the river, it was not abundant but we were told that when it rains a lot its level rises considerably.

Algunas personas se bañaron en el río, no estaba caudaloso pero nos dijeron que cuando llueve mucho su nivel sube bastante.

It was about 11:15 in the morning and we decided to start our way back. Supposedly the organizers had talked to the public transportation line that covers this route to come and pick us up and drop us off at El Consejo, but as happened on Las Tejerías hike that I told you about in my previous post, the buses didn't arrive, so we walked little by little until we reached Quebrada Seca, where we were assured that there was transportation. After walking for about an hour we arrived at the bus stop and finally got on the bus.

Ya eran como las 11:15 de la mañana y decidimos emprender el regreso. Supuestamente los organizadores habían hablado con la línea de transporte público que cubre esta ruta para que vinieran a buscarnos y nos dejaran en El Consejo, pero como pasó en la caminata de Las Tejerías que les relaté en mi publicación anterior, los autobuses no llegaban, entonces fuimos caminando poco a poco hasta llegar a Quebrada Seca, donde nos aseguraron que sí había transporte. Después de caminar como una hora llegamos a la parada y finalmente nos montamos en el autobús.

When we were a few meters away from El Consejo, guess what, a tree had fallen on the road and the bus couldn't go any further, thank goodness it didn't fall on us. We got off laughing, everyone went their own way and that's how this adventure ended, I hope you found it entertaining, see you next time!

Cuando faltaban unos metros para llegar a El Consejo, adivinen, había caído un árbol en la vía y el autobús no pudo avanzar más, menos mal que no nos cayó encima.
