Climbing the imposing Cotopaxi volcano - The Ecuador diary đ¶ đ Subiendo al imponente volcĂĄn Cotopaxi - El diario de Ecuador
After spending a few days along the Ecuadorian coast, where I got to explore interesting destinations like Montañita, Isla de la Plata, Manta and Montecristi, it was time to head back to Quito. I had four days left before my flight back to Venezuela, and I wanted to visit a few more places before leaving. One of those places was the Cotopaxi volcano, which on clear days can be seen from the capital. Absolutely gorgeous!
In Quito, I returned to the same hostel where Iâd stayed at the start of this trip, and there, while chatting with other guests, I mentioned that I wanted to visit Cotopaxi and was looking for a way to get there. Iâd seen that travel agencies were charging around $80 for a day trip. AndrĂ©s, one of the guys I was talking to, an Ecuadorian, told me he had a car, and if I wanted, we could go the next day, since a friend of his also wanted to go. He lived in the city of Cuenca and was visiting Quito to run some errands. The entire hostel staff knew him since he was a regular guest, so that gave me confidence and I accepted.
The next day, we left Quito around 8:00 a.m., stopped by to pick up his friend nearby, and headed toward the countryâs central highlands, in the province of Cotopaxi. The trip takes about two hours, and the highway offers beautiful scenery, including more volcanoes.
We stopped somewhere for a bite to eat, and shortly after 11:00 a.m. we arrived at Cotopaxi National Park. Admission was only $2 per person. Since thereâs no public transportation once youâre inside, the best ways to explore the park are by private car or by booking a tour.
Since AndrĂ©s had been here before, he knew the route well. So after moving a few kilometers through the fabulous landscape of the volcanoâs slopes, we stopped to look at Limpiopungo Lake.
This lake, located 3,892 meters above sea level, was formed by melting snow at the summit and volcanic sediment flows. There's a wooden walkway there so you can get a better view.
Of course, you can see the Cotopaxi volcano from there, and even though the sky was quite cloudy that day, we still had incredible views.
This is a high-mountain ecosystem, or Andean moor, so it gets quite cold. I read that thereâs a lot of wildlife around here, such as llamas, deer, pumas, Andean wolves, and many birds, with the condor being the most iconic. I saw some birds, but I wasnât able to photograph any of them.
We then continued our journey across the plains of this moorland. Iâve had the chance to visit several places with volcanoes, and the surrounding landscape is always spectacular and unique.
Since I wanted to take some photos, Andrés drove a little slowly, which allowed me to capture these images of the volcano. The sky was still very cloudy, so its snow-capped peak doesn't stand out much in these shots.
A few minutes later, we arrived at a parking lot, where you have to leave your vehicles before starting the hike up to the José Rivas Shelter, also known as base camp.
As the sign says, Cotopaxi, at 5,897 meters, is the second-highest active volcano in the world. Little by little, Andrés, his friend Carlos, and I began to climb, taking it slow to avoid altitude sickness.
Obviously, we weren't going to make it to the top of the volcano, I wish we could have! That would take a two-day hike and a larger budget đ, but the JosĂ© Rivas Shelter is at 4,810 meters, which is pretty high up too.
The terrain we were walking on was beautiful, just look at all those tiny pebbles in different colors đ. Of course, we had to watch our step because in some places it was slippery.
As we climbed higher, the cold grew more intense, but since I was so excited to be there, I didn't mind my face freezing. It took us about 40 minutes to reach the shelter, where we went inside for a hot drink before continuing our climb a little further.
After the break, we walked until we were very close to the Cotopaxi glacier. There, the terrain became more difficult, steeper, and littered with many more odd-shaped rocks.
But the view from there is one-of-a-kind, so it's totally worth the effort. What do you think?
While I was freezing with every step I took, AndrĂ©s hadn't even put on a jacket đ , how crazy!

As we were heading back down, we were caught in a light snowfall đ. What more could I ask for? A volcanic eruption?
And so ended this great adventure through Cotopaxi National Park, a place you shouldn't miss if you visit Ecuador.

if I'm not mistaken, i see snow out there, and he's in a t-shirt?? that's crazyyyy
the views around the volcano are so mesmerising. The nature there looks quite unique, the type matter the land is made of, the plants, and that lake, that's quite of a combination! Together it's so beautiful. And did you say lama? Really lamas walk there?đ The puma partis scary though đ
I'm glad you had such a nice trip on your last days of stay in Ecuador!
Yeah, there was snow up there, but he liked to brave the cold, he said đ .
There are llamas, but I didn't see any where we went, I only saw birds. Pumas are very shy, you don't see them very often. It's a beautiful place to visit! Thanks for stopping by đ.
đ
it's good that they're shy, i don't think it would be a pleasant meeting if you'd see them đ
You're really pretty btw!
I agree with you, even though I think they're really beautiful, coming across a puma must be really scary... Oh, thank you so much for the compliment! đ
