Cerro Las Letras, contemplating the city from the mountains [ENG-ESP]

Maybe that's not its official name, I looked for this mountain in Google Maps and it doesn't appear identified, but people who hike in La Victoria, Aragua state (Venezuela), know it as cerro Las Letras (The Letters hill).

Quizás ese no sea su nombre oficial, busqué esta montaña en Google Maps y no aparece identificada, pero la gente que hace senderismo en La Victoria, estado Aragua (Venezuela), la conoce como cerro Las Letras.

The reason is that years ago, some students of the university institute of the city who used to climb it, wrote with white painted stones the initials of that institution there at the top and as they were clearly seen from below, people began to call it Las Letras hill. Nowadays those stones are no longer there but the name remained, in this publication I show you this beautiful mountain route that I did with my sister and a group of hikers, in total we were about 15 people.

La razón es que hace años, unos estudiantes del instituto universitario de la ciudad que solían subirla, escribieron con piedras pintadas de blanco las iniciales de esa institución allí en lo alto y como se veían claramente desde abajo, la gente comenzó a llamarlo cerro Las Letras. Actualmente esas piedras ya no están ahí pero el nombre quedó, en esta publicación les muestro esta bella ruta de montaña que hice junto a mi hermana y un grupo excursionista, en total éramos unas 15 personas.

We met super early in the morning in Las Mercedes sector of La Victoria, in front of a shopping center where there is a supermarket, there is the entrance to a residential area with several houses and on one side there is a path through the vegetation that leads to the mountain.

Nos encontramos súper temprano en la mañana en el sector Las Mercedes de La Victoria, frente a un centro comercial donde hay un supermercado, por ahí está la entrada a una zona residencial con varias casas y a un lado hay un caminito entre la vegetación por el que se accede hacia la montaña.

The weather was cool and the sky was cloudy. The vegetation around here was so thick that probably not many people have climbed this mountain lately.

El clima estaba fresco y el cielo con algunas nubes, por lo crecida que estaba la vegetación por aquí seguramente no mucha gente ha subido esta montaña últimamente.

After a few minutes the terrain begins to rise and as we look back we see how we are moving away from the city and the colors of the sunrise.

A los pocos minutos el terreno comienza a elevarse y al mirar hacia atrás vemos cómo nos vamos alejando de la ciudad y los colores del amanecer.

From here the climbs become very steep, it is always good to go with a stick, it helps you to ascend and also to descend, it is like a third leg, I have a bamboo one that was given to me about six years ago, I have used it in several excursions and it has been very resistant.

A partir de aquí las subidas se vuelven muy empinadas, siempre es bueno ir con un palo, te ayuda a ascender y también a bajar, es como una tercera pierna, yo hace como seis años tengo uno de bambú que me regalaron, lo he usado en varias excursiones y ha resultado muy resistente.

I was wondering what these mountains surrounding the city look like. They look very green now that it is the rainy season and I thought it was because they had grass, but being here what looks like grass from far away, close up it's not, they are more like handfuls of thin green leaves here and there, there are also some large bushes that look like some kind of agave. The vegetation is varied and emits pleasant aromas that mingle in the environment.

Me preguntaba cómo serían estas montañas que rodean a la ciudad. Se ven muy verdes ahora que es época de lluvias y yo pensaba que era porque tenían grama, pero estando acá lo que parece grama de lejos, de cerca no lo es, son más bien como puñados de delgadas hojas verdes aquí y allá, además hay unas grandes matas que parecen como alguna especie de agave. La vegetación es variada y emite agradables aromas que se mezclan en el ambiente.

We already had about half an hour walking and at this point the group was quite dispersed, that is usually normal in the excursions, each person goes at his own pace. I was with the two who were leading, I don't like to be left behind hehehe.

Ya teníamos como media hora caminando y en este punto el grupo estaba bastante disperso, eso suele ser normal en las excursiones, cada persona va a su ritmo. Yo iba con los dos que iban liderando, no me gusta quedarme atrás jejeje.

Nearby came my sister and another girl and further back the others. There were two children in the group, between 8 and 10 years old, they were complaining about the hard climb, my sister told me, but they were coming little by little. The city was already visible in all its extension, crossed by a light fog that gave it a dreamlike aspect.

Cerca venía mi hermana y otra chica y más atrás los demás. Había dos niños en el grupo, de entre 8 y 10 años, se estaban quejando por la dura subida me dijo mi hermana, pero ahí venían poco a poco. Ya la ciudad se veía en toda su extensión, atravesada por una ligera neblina que le daba un aspecto como onírico.

At this point the sun was already rising, a moment that I didn't fail to capture.

En este punto ya el sol se estaba asomando, momento que no dejé de capturar.

I was surprised by the presence of these trees, from a distance these mountains seem not to have them.

Me sorprendió la presencia de estos árboles, de lejos estas montañas pareciera que no los tuvieran.

The path became much steeper and rockier, so you had to be careful not to slip, but the views of both the city and the mountains became more spectacular as well.

El camino se puso mucho más empinado y además rocoso, por lo que había que tener cuidado de no resbalar, pero las vistas tanto hacia la ciudad como a las montañas se volvieron también más espectaculares.

When I am hiking, contemplating this kind of scenery and breathing fresh air, any negative thoughts I have vanish, definitely the contact with nature is something we should never do without.

Cuando estoy haciendo senderismo, contemplando este tipo de escenarios y respirando aire puro, cualquier pensamiento negativo que tenga se esfuma, definitivamente el contacto con la naturaleza es algo de lo que jamás debemos prescindir.

We were about to reach the top, but first we had to climb another even steeper and rockier hill.

Ya estábamos por llegar a la cima, pero antes nos faltaba subir por otra colina aún más abrupta y rocosa.

Shortly after that we made the summit, eeeeeeh! In total it took us an hour and 15 minutes. We sat down to wait for the rest of the group on some rocks there on a flat part and when they arrived we ate, shared some bananas and snacks and rested for a while looking at the fabulous scenery around us.

Poco después hicimos cumbre, ¡eeeeeh! En total nos tomó una hora y 15 minutos. Nos sentamos a esperar por el resto del grupo en unas piedras que hay allí en lo plano y cuando llegaron comimos, compartimos algunos cambures (bananas) y chucherías y descansamos un rato mirando los fabulosos paisajes a nuestro alrededor.

Mr. Andrés, the organizer of this outing and a connoisseur of the thousand and one paths around here, told us that we were going to go around the hill behind us before going down. The mountains around here are a total beauty!

El señor Andrés, organizador de esta salida y conocedor de los mil y un caminos por aquí, nos dijo que íbamos a darle la vuelta a la colina que estaba atrás antes de bajar. ¡Son una total belleza las montañas por aquí!

You can see several marked trails in the distance, one can venture to other longer routes and for example reach La Colonia Tovar, a very touristic and famous town in Aragua state for being an old German settlement that has maintained its traditions and architecture over the years.

Se ven varios caminitos marcados a lo lejos, uno se puede aventurar hacia otras rutas más largas y por ejemplo llegar a La Colonia Tovar, una población muy turística y famosa en el estado Aragua por ser un viejo asentamiento de alemanes que han mantenido sus tradiciones y arquitectura a través de los años.

After completing the return to the hill, it was time to go down. Although the return is on the same trail, we always see different things on the way down.

Al completar la vuelta a la colina ya era hora de bajar. Aunque el regreso es por el mismo sendero, siempre vemos cosas diferentes al bajar.

For example, other flowers and small wild fruits among the vegetation that I didn't notice on our way up.

Por ejemplo otras flores y pequeñas frutas silvestres entre la vegetación que no noté cuando íbamos subiendo.

Although the sky was clear, thanks to some clouds the sun was not too strong, so we didn't sweat too much during the descent.

Aunque el cielo estaba despejado, gracias a algunas nubes el sol no estaba muy fuerte, así que no nos hizo sudar mucho durante el descenso.

Before 10:00 in the morning we were back in the city, it was certainly a pleasant experience to climb one of the surrounding mountains, see it from another perspective and leave here this route in images.

Antes de las 10:00 de la mañana ya estábamos de vuelta en la ciudad, sin duda fue una grata experiencia subir a una de las montañas que la rodean, verla desde otra perspectiva y dejar aquí esta ruta en imágenes.
