Beneath the waters of Sullivan Bay, Galapagos Islands - The Ecuador diary 🌊 Bajo las aguas de la Bahía de Sullivan, Islas Galápagos - El diario de Ecuador
After trekking on Bartolome Island, where we enjoyed incredible views of its exotic volcanic landscape from the summit, the tour continued to Sullivan Bay, where we went snorkeling.
We returned to the boat, and on the way to our destination we passed in front of the impressive Pinnacle Rock, which we had seen from afar when we arrived at Bartolome Island and then from the viewpoint. Seeing it up close was amazing, and we were told that it was formed when an underwater volcano expelled its magma, which cooled upon contact with seawater, then exploded and remained in that shape. It is composed of many layers of basalt.
The weather remained cloudy, which made the water appear darker and perhaps less visible for snorkeling, but fortunately it did not rain.
Sullivan Bay is located on Santiago Island, opposite Bartolome Island, so it didn't take us long to get there. As soon as we set foot on the sand, the guides gave us our diving masks, snorkels and diving fins, and told us that there was a wide variety of marine life to observe in that area of the beach.
One of the things that worried me about this tour was not being able to take underwater photos, since my digital camera wasn't waterproof. The day before, I had asked in several stores if they had any cases that would allow me to submerge my camera, but I couldn't find any. However, I stumbled upon something unexpected that would allow me to achieve my goal: a disposable underwater camera. I was surprised because it was analog, with film, which I thought no longer existed. Of course, I bought this, let's say, vintage item 😃, and the underwater photos you will see below were taken with it.

I got ready with my mask, snorkel, and fins, and dove in with the rest of the group at the beach. The water was cold, but as soon as I put my head under and swam a few meters, I started to see the wildlife, and I forgot about the temperature.

We had been told that here we might see and swim with Galapagos penguins, but they didn't show up. Anyway, I was happy with what I got to see on this experience: lots of colorful fish, stingrays, sea turtles, and even sharks.

I confess that when I saw the shark, about four meters away from me, I was paralyzed for a few minutes. I couldn't even take a picture of it 😅. It wasn't that big, I'd say it was about a meter and a half long, but I'd never been so close to one before. I don't know what species it was, but we were told that there are Galapagos sharks and white tip sharks in these waters.

We also had the opportunity to swim alongside several turtles, who were feeding on the rocks without paying us much attention.

The Galápagos green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) is the only species that nests in the archipelago. Its movements underwater are very entertaining to watch; it looks as if it were flying.

What did you think of these underwater photos? I think they turned out pretty well 😃. Finally, a little fish with a zebra pattern.

After about an hour, our exciting exploration came to an end. Here you can also see the famous marine iguanas, crabs, sea lions, and birds.

We boarded the boat to return to Santa Cruz Island, and within minutes the weather began to change. An intense blue sky accompanied us during the trip.
We passed close to some strikingly shaped islets. The sea was a deep blue, creating a beautiful contrast with the color of those pieces of land and volcanic rocks.
And so I said goodbye to the extraordinary Galapagos Islands, where I spent seven incredible days getting to know some of its wildlife and geography. And I tell you, if you have the opportunity, don't hesitate to visit!

Thank you very much @jlinaresp friend! I had to share this detail hehe. It was also the first time I did underwater photography 😃. I developed those photos when I returned to Caracas. I found a photo studio that still worked with analog photography.
