Every city has must-visit spots, and in Barcelona, perhaps the most iconic is the Sagrada Família temple. Despite remaining unfinished, its incredible forms attract thousands of tourists every day.

Toda ciudad tiene lugares que se deben visitar sí o sí, y en Barcelona quizás el más icónico es el templo de La Sagrada Familia. A pesar de estar inconcluso, por sus increíbles formas atrae a miles de turistas cada día.

As an architecture enthusiast, especially of the Modernist style, I didn't want to miss this place. I went in the morning and it was already packed with people, so I had to queue to buy the admission ticket, which cost me 12.50 euros.

Como amante de la arquitectura, y más de la modernista, no me quería perder este lugar. Fui en la mañana y ya estaba repleto de gente, por lo que tuve que hacer cola para comprar el ticket de entrada, que me costó 12,50 euros.

The Basilica of the Sagrada Familia is the work of the famous architect Antoni Gaudí, and its construction began in March 1882. In other words, work has been underway for 144 years because, as I mentioned at the start, it remains unfinished. As I approached this immense structure, I was deeply impressed by its intricate details and, above all, by its shapes, which seem impossible to build, almost unreal.

La Basílica de La Sagrada Familia es una obra del famoso arquitecto Antoni Gaudí, y su construcción comenzó en marzo de 1882. Es decir, ya los trabajos llevan 144 años, porque como dije al principio, está sin terminar. Cuando me fui acercando a esta inmensa estructura, quedé muy impresionada con los detalles que tiene y sobre todo con sus formas que parecen imposibles de construir, casi irreales.

Gaudí (1852–1926) took over this project in 1883, one year after construction had begun, and completely altered the original design, which had been created by the diocesan architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. He transformed it from a traditional Neo-Gothic structure into a Modernist one, a style of which he was the foremost exponent in Catalonia.

Gaudí (1852-1926) asumió este proyecto un año después de haberse iniciado su construcción, en 1883, y cambió totalmente su diseño original, que había sido hecho por el arquitecto diocesano Francisco de Paula del Villar. De neogótico tradicional lo transformó en algo modernista, estilo del que fue el máximo exponente en Cataluña.

I hadn't seen many photos or videos of this temple before visiting, nor had I read much about it, I wanted the element of surprise to shape the visit and to gather information on-site. I knew Gaudí drew great inspiration from nature, and you notice that when looking at the columns and many other details of the structure.

No había visto casi fotos ni videos de este templo antes de ir, y tampoco había leído demasiada información, quería que el factor sorpresa condujera esta visita y obtener los datos in situ. Sabía que Gaudí se inspiraba mucho en la naturaleza, y eso lo notas al observar las columnas y muchos otros detalles de la estructura.

After a partial tour of the exterior of La Sagrada Familia, I went inside. It truly leaves you speechless, I had never seen anything like it—, Gaudí's architecture completely blows your mind.

Después de hacer un recorrido parcial por la parte externa de La Sagrada Familia, pasé a su interior. Realmente te deja boquiabierta, nunca había visto algo así, la arquitectura de Gaudí te vuela los conceptos.

The temple's columns are inspired by trees. There are 18 of them, conceived as follows: twelve representing the Apostles, four the Evangelists, one the Virgin Mary, and one Jesus Christ.

Las columnas del templo están inspiradas en los árboles. Son 18 y están concebidas así: doce representan a los apóstoles, cuatro a los evangelistas, una a la Virgen María y una a Jesucristo.

The Jesus Christ column or tower, standing 172.5 meters tall, gives the Sagrada Familia the title of the tallest church in the world.

La columna o torre de Jesucristo, con sus 172,5 metros, otorga a la Sagrada Familia el título de la iglesia más alta del mundo.

Another thing that caught my eye about this extraordinary modernist design was the way natural light enters the space. There are several windows or openings that serve this purpose, and the interior lighting changes color depending on the time of day.

Otra cosa que me llamó la atención de este extraordinario diseño modernista fue la entrada de luz natural que tiene. Hay varias ventanas o aberturas que cumplen esta función y dependiendo la hora del día, la iluminación interior cambia de color.

After exploring the interior of the temple, I moved on to an adjoining room featuring an exhibition of sketches and models of the project, as well as information about Gaudí.

Después de conocer el interior del templo, pasé a una sala contigua que tenía una exhibición de bocetos y maquetas de la obra, y también información sobre Gaudí.

It should be noted that Gaudí's sketches were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War (1936), a factor that has also contributed to the delay in completing the structure, as little information regarding the project remained.

Hay que tener en cuenta que durante la Guerra Civil Española (1936), los bocetos de Gaudí fueron destruidos, y ese también ha sido un factor por el que la estructura ha tardado en concluirse, ya que no quedó mucha información del proyecto.

After leaving the exhibition, I visited the on-site shop. There were plenty of interesting items to buy, depending on one's budget. I chose a lovely coffee mug priced at 4.40 euros. The money spent on admission and shop purchases helps fund the completion of the project, the duration of which remains uncertain.

Al salir de esta exposición, fui a la tienda que hay allí. Había un montón de objetos interesantes para llevar, según el presupuesto de cada quien. Yo opté por una preciosa taza para tomar café, su precio: 4,40 euros. El dinero que se paga por la entrada y lo que se compra en la tienda contribuye para financiar la terminación de la obra, que aún no se sabe hasta cuándo se extenderá.

To wrap things up, I explored the remaining exterior sections of the temple, mostly looking upwards 😁, too much art to enjoy.

Para finalizar, recorrí la parte exterior del templo que me faltaba, casi siempre mirando para arriba 😁, demasiado arte para disfrutar.

Something I read in a brochure is that Gaudí used three-dimensional geometry in his designs. Isn't that incredible?
