A visit to the renovated Cruz de Mayo square / Una visita a la renovada Plaza Cruz de Mayo

A couple of weeks ago, I found out that they had restored a small square located in a very beautiful setting, surrounded by mountains, so I went there last Sunday to see its new look.

Hace un par de semanas me enteré de que habían restaurado una pequeña plaza que queda en un entorno muy bonito, rodeada de montañas, así que me fui el pasado domingo hasta allá para ver su nuevo rostro.

Cruz de Mayo Square is located in the Jesús neighborhood, a district of the city of La Victoria, Venezuela, which lies at the start of the road leading to one of the most famous tourist destinations in Aragua State: Colonia Tovar.

La plaza Cruz de Mayo está en el barrio Jesús, un sector de la ciudad de La Victoria, Venezuela, que se encuentra donde comienza la vía hacia uno de los sitios turísticos más famosos del estado Aragua: la Colonia Tovar.

This small gathering space is triangular in shape. Among the recent renovations made to it, stands out the colorful mural with flowers and mountains dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

Este pequeño espacio de encuentro tiene forma triangular. En los arreglos recientes que le hicieron, destaca el colorido mural con flores y montañas dedicado a San Juan Bautista.

When you enter the plaza, you can see several structures there. Obviously, the centerpiece is the cross, located in one corner. It’s quite tall, more than 3 meters, and is decorated with flowers that appear to be made from painted plastic bottles.

Al entrar a la plaza, se ven varias estructuras allí. Obviamente, la protagonista es la cruz, situada en una esquina. Es bastante alta, más de 3 metros, y está adornada con flores que parecen estar hechas con botellas plásticas pintadas.

Every May 3, the Day of the May Cross is celebrated, a cultural and religious tradition to ask nature for bountiful harvests with the arrival of the rains. On that day, believers gather and decorate the cross with fresh flowers, fruits, and colorful ornaments. There is also singing and music accompanied by drums.

Cada 3 de mayo se celebra el Día de la Cruz de Mayo, una tradición cultural y religiosa para pedir a la naturaleza cosechas abundantes por la llegada de las lluvias. Ese día los creyentes se reúnen y adornan la cruz con flores naturales, frutas e implementos coloridos. También hay cantos y música con tambores.

The plaza also has benches and planters with plants like pomegranate trees. The day I went, this tree had fruit, and I took one home. There are also several metal structures for climbing plants; hopefully they’ll grow soon to provide more shade and beauty to the place.

La plaza también cuenta con bancos y jardineras con plantas como la granada. El día que fui, esta mata tenía frutas y me llevé una. También hay varias estructuras metálicas que son para enredaderas; ojalá crezcan pronto para dar más sombra y belleza al lugar.

I don't know how old this little square is, there isn't a plaque with any information about it, and I couldn't find anything online either. That's one of the shortcomings of many places in Venezuela, they lack historical information for visitors.

No sé cuántos años tendrá esta placita, no hay ninguna placa que dé información sobre ella, y en Internet tampoco encontré nada. Ese es uno de los puntos débiles de muchos lugares en Venezuela, carecen de reseña histórica para los visitantes.

Although it was a brief visit to a very small place, I enjoyed this Sunday stroll and liked the renovations they made to the plaza.

Aunque fue una visita breve y a un sitio muy pequeño, disfruté este paseo dominguero y me gustó la renovación que le hicieron a la plaza.
