A trip to Tigre with an unexpected invitation - Argentina / Un viaje a Tigre con una invitación inesperada - Argentina

This post is a follow-up to one I shared here a couple of weeks ago, when I went with a group of classmates to visit the Tigre Delta, a classic nature getaway for residents of Buenos Aires.

Esta publicación es una continuación de otra que compartí aquí hace un par de semanas, cuando fui con un grupo de compañeros de curso a conocer el Delta del Tigre, una escapada clásica a la naturaleza para los residentes de Buenos Aires.

After our walk through San Isidro and the ride on the Tren de la Costa (Coastal Train), we arrived at the pier, where you can take river transport to navigate the islands and channels of the Paraná River, one of the largest rivers in the world.

Después de nuestro paseo por San Isidro y el recorrido en el Tren de la Costa, llegamos al muelle, donde se puede tomar el transporte fluvial para navegar por las islas y canales del río Paraná, uno de los más caudalosos del mundo.

We went to the tourist office to see what we could do, because there are several routes and things to see, and while we were there, a colleague started talking to a group of Argentine guys who were buying their tickets for the boat trip.

Nos acercamos a la oficina turística para ver qué podíamos hacer, porque hay varias rutas y cosas que ver, y mientras estábamos allí, un compañero se puso a conversar con un grupo de chicos argentinos que estaban comprando sus boletos para navegar.

When they found out that we were foreigners and didn't have any definite plans there, they suggested we go with them to a house that one of them had there, just to spend the afternoon, swim in the river, and cook outdoors.

Cuando supieron que éramos extranjeros y no teníamos plan definido allí, nos propusieron ir con ellos, iban a una casa que tenía uno de ellos allí, simplemente a pasar la tarde, bañarse en el río y preparar comida al aire libre.

In general, people are very friendly in Argentina, so even though we didn't know them, we thought it was a good idea and accepted their invitation. We bought tickets, some drinks, and snacks, and boarded the boat. There were six people in my group, five Spaniards and me from Venezuela, and there were seven of them.

En general, la gente es muy amistosa en Argentina, así que, aunque no los conocíamos, nos pareció una buena idea y aceptamos su invitación. Compramos los boletos, algunas bebidas y snacks, y nos embarcamos. Éramos seis personas en mi grupo, cinco españoles y yo de Venezuela, y ellos eran siete.

The boat set off and during our journey, which lasted about an hour, we were able to see the attractive landscapes of the Tigre Delta, which covers a total area of about 221 km2 and has more than 350 rivers and streams.

El barco zarpó y durante nuestro recorrido, que duró más o menos una hora, pudimos contemplar los atractivos paisajes del Delta del Tigre, que en total tiene una superficie de unos 221 km2 y cuenta con más de 350 ríos y arroyos.

This is an important biological corridor for many species of animals and plants, in 2000 it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The name of this area comes from the yaguaretés that used to live here, felines similar to tigers that are now endangered.

Este es un importante corredor biológico para muchas especies de animales y plantas, en el año 2000 fue declarado por la UNESCO como Reserva Natural de la Biosfera. El nombre de esta zona proviene de los yaguaretés que solían vivir aquí, felinos similares a los tigres que ahora se encuentran en peligro de extinción.

Although it is primarily a place for rest and recreation, there are also people who live here permanently. We saw many different styles of houses as we sailed by, some simple and others more luxurious.

Aunque es un lugar más que todo para el descanso y la recreación, también hay personas que viven acá permanentemente. Vimos muchos estilos de casas mientras navegábamos, unas sencillas y otras más lujosas.

Since the 19th century, with the arrival of European immigration, forestry and the timber industry were the main economic activities in this area. Then, in the mid-20th century, fruit production and some food processing plants were added. Currently, tourism generates the most income for Tigre, with a wide range of recreational, gastronomic, and lodging options for visitors.

Desde el siglo XIX, con la llegada de la inmigración europea, la explotación forestal y la industria de la madera eran la principal actividad económica de esta zona, luego a mediados del siglo XX se incorporó la producción de frutas y algunas plantas procesadoras de alimentos. Actualmente es el turismo lo que genera más ingresos a Tigre, con una amplia oferta recreativa, gastronómica y de hospedaje para los visitantes.

The afternoon was hot but very pleasant. Wherever we went, we saw people relaxing or swimming in the river.

La tarde estaba calurosa pero muy agradable, por donde pasábamos veíamos a la gente relajada o dándose un baño en el río.

Finally, we arrived at our destination, the house where we were invited to spend the afternoon, a beautiful blue-painted wooden building that looked like something out of a fairy tale.

Finalmente llegamos a nuestro destino, la casa donde nos invitaron a pasar la tarde, una linda construcción en madera pintada de azul que parecía sacada de un cuento.

The area was very beautiful, surrounded by lush vegetation. I felt like I was in an enchanted forest.

La zona era muy linda, rodeada de una vegetación exuberante. Me sentí como si estuviera en un bosque encantado.

We left our things inside the house and sat down near the small pier. Everything flowed so naturally that it seemed as if we had known each other for a long time. They were also students and worked, so there was no shortage of topics of conversation or fun.

Dejamos nuestras cosas dentro de la casa y nos sentamos cerca del pequeño muelle. Todo fluyó con tanta naturalidad que parecía como si nos conociéramos desde hacía mucho tiempo. Ellos también eran estudiantes y trabajaban, así que no nos faltaron temas de conversación ni diversión.

Our hosts took care of lighting the fire for the grill while the rest of us took a look around the place. Three of the girls in my group went into the river to swim, but I didn't because I hadn't brought my swimsuit and I thought that if I went in with my clothes on, they wouldn't dry because of the humidity in the air.

Nuestros anfitriones se encargaron de encender el fuego para la parrilla mientras los demás dábamos una vuelta por el lugar. Tres de las chicas de mi grupo se metieron en el río para nadar, pero yo no lo hice porque no había llevado mi traje de baño y pensé que si me metía con la ropa puesta, no se secaría debido a la humedad que había en el ambiente.

There was also a furry friend in the group, belonging to one of the guys. This beautiful black dog was called Indio. He found a friend to play with there, who must have been from a nearby house.

También había un peludo en el grupo, era de uno de los chicos, este precioso perro negro se llamaba Indio. Él encontró una amiga allí para jugar, seguro era de alguna casa cercana.

Although I didn't bathe in the river, because of the heat I took off my blouse and wet my body a little to cool off.

Aunque no me bañé en el río, debido al calor me quité la blusa y me mojé un poco el cuerpo para refrescarme.

Getting to know part of Tigre with a group of locals was a unique experience. Sometimes it can be difficult to trust strangers, but these people had such a good vibe that we didn't hesitate to accept their invitation, and fortunately we had an unforgettable afternoon.

Conocer una parte de Tigre con un grupo de locales fue una experiencia única. A veces puede resultar difícil confiar en desconocidos, pero la vibra de estas personas era tan buena que no dudamos en aceptar su invitación, y afortunadamente pasamos una tarde inolvidable.
