Located among the 15 countries with the largest reserves of fresh water on the planet, Venezuela also has stunning places where this vital liquid circulates, there are many throughout the country but undoubtedly the most emblematic region to enjoy spectacular rivers and waterfalls is in the south, in La Gran Sabana (The Great Savannah).

Ubicada entre los 15 países con mayores reservas de agua dulce del planeta, Venezuela tiene además impactantes lugares donde este vital líquido circula, hay muchos a lo largo y ancho del país pero sin duda la región más emblemática para disfrutar de ríos y cascadas espectaculares está al sur, en La Gran Sabana.

As promised in my previous post, this time I bring you a series of photos of the waterfalls I visited during my week-long trip to this area, which is part of Canaima National Park.

Tal como prometí en mi publicación anterior, en esta ocasión les traigo una serie de fotos de las cascadas que visité durante mi viaje de una semana por esta área, la cual forma parte del Parque Nacional Canaima.

As much as I researched I couldn't find an exact figure of how many waterfalls there are in La Gran Sabana, there are hundreds, some better known than others and many that surely no human being has walked on for years, and that is because this territory is too vast.

Por más que investigué no encontré una cifra exacta de cuántas cascadas existen en La Gran Sabana, son cientos, unas más conocidas que otras y muchas que seguramente hace años ningún ser humano pisa, y es que este territorio es demasiado extenso.

The Kamoirán Rapids / Los Rápidos de Kamoirán

When you arrive at La Gran Sabana this is one of the first tourist stops, there is an inn, other services (food, bathrooms, etc) and behind these facilities there is a forest and there is a river that flows through several waterfalls where you can bathe.

Cuando llegas a La Gran Sabana esta es una de las primeras paradas turísticas, hay una posada, otros servicios (comida, baños, etc) y detrás de estas instalaciones hay un bosque y allí se encuentra el río que fluye por varios saltos de agua donde te puedes bañar.

Agua Fría Falls / Salto Agua Fría

This is a place that offers a 2 x 1, first you know a viewpoint called The Window to Heaven or Heaven's Gate, with a steep waterfall, a beautiful view of the savannah and small waterfalls around and then follow a path and nearby is the Agua Fria (Cold Water) waterfall, with a large pool to dive and swim in its icy waters.

Este es un paraje que te ofrece un 2 x 1, primero conoces un mirador llamado La Ventana al Cielo o La Puerta del Cielo, con una empinada caída de agua, una bella vista de la sabana y pequeñas cascadas alrededor y luego sigues un sendero y cerca está el Salto Agua Fría, con una amplia poza para zambullirte y nadar en sus heladas aguas.

Veil of the Bride Waterfall / Salto Velo de la Novia

Following a path through a thick forest you reach this almost hidden waterfall, known as the Veil of the Bride Waterfall or Urué-Merú (in the indigenous language), because of the way the water flows down the rocks.

Siguiendo un sendero por un espeso bosque llegas a esta casi oculta cascada, conocida como el salto Velo de la Novia o Urué-Merú (en legua indígena), por la manera como se ve el agua que baja por las piedras.

This waterfall has like a second level, which you reach through a path that goes up on the right side. This second waterfall is beautiful and has an air of mystery.

Esta cascada tiene como un segundo nivel, al cual llegas por un caminito que sube por el lado derecho. Esa segunda cascada es preciosa y con un aire de misterio.

Jasper ravine / Quebrada de Jaspe

Also known as Kako Parú, this is perhaps the most famous and visited place in La Gran Sabana, and it deserves it, it is an unreal scenery, a huge jasper slab in a thick forest, through which water flows down, enlivening the color of this semi-precious stone.

También conocido como Kako Parú, este es quizás el lugar más famoso y visitado de La Gran Sabana, y lo tiene merecido, es un escenario irreal, una enorme laja de jaspe entre un espeso bosque, por la que baja el agua avivando el color de esta piedra semi preciosa.

Soroape Spa / Balneario de Soroape

This is a natural complex that has many pools formed between huge stones, there are of different depths and for all tastes, so it is one of the points that attracts more people in La Gran Sabana. Here there are also services for visitors: camping area, restrooms and food stands.

Este es un complejo natural que posee muchas piscinas formadas entre enormes piedras, hay de distintas profundidades y para todos los gustos, por eso es uno de los puntos que más gente atrae en La Gran Sabana. Aquí además hay servicios para los visitantes: zona para acampar, baños y puestos de comida.

Mauraik Waterfall / Salto Mauraik

This waterfall called Mauraik is one of the least known and visited, perhaps because it is quite far from the tracks, to reach it you have to walk along a path. Its beauty is worth the adventure, the water that falls from these rocks looks like gold.

Esta cascada llamada Mauraik es de las menos conocidas y visitadas, quizás porque se encuentra bastante alejada de las vías, para llegar a ella hay que meterse a pie por un sendero. Su belleza vale la aventura, el agua que cae de esas rocas parece de oro.

Arapán Merú waterfall / Salto Arapán Merú

It is also known as Quebrada Pacheco and is another place that has many areas to bathe along the river. It is also run by the natives, who are very friendly and if you are lucky the children will sing songs in Pemón, their language.

También se le conoce como Quebrada Pacheco y es otro de los lugares que cuenta con muchos espacios para bañarse a lo largo del río. Además es atendido por los nativos, quienes son muy amables y si tienes suerte los niños te cantan canciones en pemón, su lengua.

Yuruaní Curtains or Arapena Waterfall / Cortinas del Yuruaní o Salto Arapena

Although it is not a bathing spot because the force of the water would take you away, the Yuruaní Curtains are a must on the tour of La Gran Sabana, that's why they have made a lookout point where people park to get closer and contemplate the waterfall.

Aunque no es un punto para bañarse debido a que la fuerza del agua te llevaría, las Cortinas del Yuruaní son un imperdible en el recorrido por La Gran Sabana, por eso han hecho un mirador donde la gente se estaciona para acercarse y contemplar la cascada.

The Oasis / El Oasis

The vastness of the savannah hides places like this, suddenly you are walking through an apparently flat place and you see a steep slope, there is this wonder of nature called The Oasis, a spectacular waterfall with turquoise waters.

La inmensidad de la sabana esconde lugares como este, de repente vas caminando por un lugar aparentemente plano y ves una abrupta bajada, allí se encuentra esta maravilla de la naturaleza llamada El Oasis, una cascada espectacular con aguas color turquesa.

Aponwao Falls / Salto Aponwao

I add to this collection the most impressive waterfall I visited on this trip: the Aponwao. It has a height of approximately 108 meters and to reach it you navigate the river and then walk down a path.

Sumo a esta colección la cascada más impresionante que visité en este viaje: el Aponwao. Tiene una altura de aproximadamente 108 metros y para llegar a ella navegas por el río y luego bajas caminando por un sendero.

The loud sound of the water falling from that height is the soundtrack of this landscape, I hope someday you will hear it.

El fuerte sonido del agua que cae desde esa altura es la banda sonora de este paisaje, espero que algún día vayan a escucharlo.

Kawi Waterfall / Salto Kawi

Finally I leave you with the Kawi Waterfall, another wonder with jasper stone included in which you can bathe along the different falls of the riverbed. It has waterfalls to get a massage with the force of the water and pools to swim and dive.

Para finalizar los dejo con el Salto Kawi, otra maravilla con piedra de jaspe incluido en la que te puedes bañar a lo largo de las diferentes caídas del cauce del río. Tiene cascadas para darse un masaje con la fuerza del agua y pozas para nadar y zambullirse.
