Basilica Cistern After Restoration / Yerebatan Sarnıcının Restorasyondan Sonraki Hali

Hello everyone. I recently had the opportunity to visit the Basilica Cistern, which I wanted to visit for a long time. I wanted to share my impressions on this subject with you.

Herkese merhaba. Uzun zamandır ziyaret etmek istediğim Yerebatan Sarnıcı'nı geçtiğimiz günlerde ziyaret etme fırsatı buldum. Bu konudaki izlenimlerimi sizlerle paylaşmak istedim.

Actually, I've been to the Basilica Cistern before. but I don't remember much about that time as I visited about 13 years ago. Things I remember; It was close to the Blue Mosque and it smelled very damp inside.
This structure, which was built as an underground water tank, has been restored for about 4 years. And finally the restoration was finished and it was reopened to visitors last July. I delayed my visit a bit because I thought it would be very crowded at first, and finally I was able to reach my request and visit. But although I didn't think it would be so intense anymore, I was wrong. It was still very crowded.

Aslında Yerebatan Sarnıcına daha önce gitmiştim. Fakat yaklaşık 13 yıl önce ziyaret etmiş olduğumdan o zamanla ilgili çok şey hatırlamıyorum. Hatırladığım şeyler; Sultanahmet Camiine yakın olduğu ve içinin çok fazla rutubet koktuğuydu.
Bir yer altı su deposu olarak inşa edilen bu yapı yaklaşık 4 yıldır restore ediliyordu. Ve nihayet restorasyon bitti ve geçtiğimiz temmuz ayında tekrar ziyarete açıldı. İlk zamanlar çok kalabalık olacağını düşündüğüm için ben de ziyaretimi biraz geciktirdim ve nihayet isteğime ulaşıp ziyaret edebildim. Fakat ne kadar artık çok yoğun olacağını düşünmemiş olsam da yanılmışım. Hala çok kalabalıktı.

I was very impressed with what I saw. And I really liked the new version of the Basilica Cistern. There is a very beautiful light system inside and the colors of the lights change at certain intervals during the visit of the visitors. This adds an impressive atmosphere to the cistern.
At the same time, different figures are placed in many places, which makes visitors feel as if they are living in ancient times or diving into an ocean at times.

Gördüğüm manzara karşısında çok etkilendim. Ve Yerebatan Sarnıcının yeni halini çok beğendim. İçerisinde çok güzel bir ışık sistemi var ve ziyaretçilerin burayı gezmesi sırasında, belli aralıklarla ışıkların renkleri değişiyor. Bu da sarnıca etkileyici bir atmosfer katıyor.
Aynı zamanda birçok yere farklı farklı figürler konmuş ve bu da ziyaretçilere zaman zaman sanki antik çağda yaşıyormuş veya bir okyanusun içine dalış yapmış gibi hissettiriyor.

The water level in the cistern has been raised and the walkway has been built with holes. In this way, it was tried to create the feeling of walking on water. And I think it has been successful.

Sarnıçta su seviyesi yükseltilmiş ve yürüyüş yolu da delikli bir şekilde inşa edilmiş. Bu sayede sanki suyun üzerinde yürüyormuş hissi oluşturulmaya çalışılmış. Ve bence de bunda başarılı olunmuş.

To give information about the Basilica Cistern: It was built in 542 AD by the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I to meet the water needs of the Great Palace. It is also known as the Basilica Palace due to its splendor among the marble columns rising in the water.

This is a giant building of 9800 square meters. There are 336 marble columns, each 9 meters high.
The head of Medusa, which is used as a pedestal under the two columns in the northwest corner of the cistern, is one of the masterpieces of Roman sculpture art.

Yerebatan Sarnıcı hakkında bilgi vermek gerekirse: M.S 542 yılında Doğu Roma imparatoru 1. Justinianus tarafından Büyük Sarayın su ihtiyacını karşılamak için yapılmıştır. Suyun içinde yükselen mermer sütunların arasındaki ihtişamından dolayı Yerebatan Sarayı olarak da anılmaktadır.

Burası 9800 metrekarelik dev bir yapıdır. Burada her biri 9 metre yüksekliğinde 336 mermer sütun bulunmaktadır.
Sarnıcın kuzeybatı köşesindeki iki sütunun altında kaide olarak kullanılan Medusa başı Roma Çağı heykeltraşlık sanatının şaheser örneklerindendir.
