Share Our World: Horseshoe Bend Hike

avatar

During our Lake Powell Vacation we stayed a couple of days in Page, Arizona before getting on the lake. One night we decided to visit Horseshoe Bend at sunset.

It was a little rainy which was great, there were not as many people out in the rain.

This hike gets a 7/10

Sara's RatingPart of hikeMy thoughts
1Access to trailParking is close to trailhead and costs $10 per car
2DifficultyVery easy walk 1.5-mile (2.4 km) round trip
1ViewsGreat views of the bend, same view in all directions
1DestinationGreat view at the lookout
2Time on trialwe spent about an hour walking out, taking pictures and walking back to our car.

Carins along the trail

A little rest area on the trail

The View!

We had a great time taking pictures at the overlook. It is really really steep and a bit scary as the drop is 1,000 feet down.

In the map below you can see the curve in the Colorado River that make Horseshoe Bend.

This is my 2nd time to Horseshoe Bend and I enjoyed it so much more this time. The weather was cooler, I was with my family, and the light was better to get pictures. Glad I went back!

Horseshoe Bend is an awesome spot. It's really easy to get to, yet most don't go. It's one of those places that has to be seen to be believed.

I have a hard time calling those structures Carins. I'd call them zen rocks. Stacks made just for the aesthetic of them, not actual memorials. I have a few that I add a stone to every time I pass. Some just out of respect, some because I know the reason they are there. Desert dwellers consider it bad luck to pass by a Carin without adding to it or at least pausing in respect.

I have one I tend in SE Utah. It started for my daughter and now has a frightful number of stones on it that I have placed. Others have added, too. Which leads me to Goosenecks State Park, Utah. Near Medicine Hat and right next to 'the Valley of the Gods' it's a place you should see, Sara. I'd further recommend a drive up the Moki Dugway and Muley Point State Park at the top. From Goosenecks you can see Valley of the Gods and Monument Valley. Impressive place.

Thanks for sharing a wonderful place. I appreciate it.

Thanks Tom. That is an interesting point about the rocks as they are not marking or guiding. I like Zen rocks. Thanks also for the suggestion. I would love to see Valley of the Gods. I am excited to explore more and more of this awesome area!

Great location and a view from the lookout. People standing on the right at the edge of the cliff terrifies me (I have a fear of heights). It's good that there is a safety fence on the rest of the site :)
