Share Our World: Highlights of Lake Powell Vacation

avatar
(Edited)

I am so excited to share with you highlights from my trip to Lake Powell. Our family went to Page, Arizona for a few days then rented a house boat on Lake Powell.

This is the first time we have ever boated together and it was great!

Page, Arizona

My sister and I were both born in Page and so we started our family reunion here. In addition to eating a lot of great food, playing and talking. We visited Antelope Canyon, Glen Canyon Dam, and Horseshoe Bend.

Note: The posts with the link and * have more detailed posts and most have videos!

Antelope Canyon*

I have lived in Arizona for 15 years and have wanted to go Antelope Canyon the whole time. Since we were staying in Page we got tickets and all went together! It was wonderful.

The Glen Canyon Dam*

The dam was built in Page in 1956-1966. It is 710-foot (220 m) high dam and helps ensures water from the Colorado Rivers gets to people in the states in the southwest United States. 1
@jarvie had a great time telling dam jokes!

Horseshoe Bend*

This is my 2nd time to Horseshoe bend and I enjoyed it much more this time with my family. It is a short 1.3 mile hike to the bend in the Colorado River. We went at sunset and so the weather was very pleasant.

Lake Powell

Coming out of Wahweap Marina*

We had good weather as we came out of the marina.

Storm on the Lake*

Not long into our trip we ran right into a very big thunder, lighting, hail storm on the lake. @jarvie did an amazing job driving the house boat through the storm. I also got some great moody pictures.

First day's camp*

Our first dock was really great! I set up a tent on the shore and this was my view in the morning.

Sunrise jet skiing West Canyon*

My favorite part of the trip was the early morning jet ski adventures!

Sunrise jet skiing Reflection Canyon*

Jodi joined @jarvie and me the 2nd morning

Oak Canyon*

We beached the boat for a couple days at Oak Canyon. It was a great location, close to some great canyons, Rainbow Bridge and Hole in the rock.

Rainbow Bridge*

A group of us got on the pontoon boat and sailed as as close as we could and then hiked to Rainbow Bridge.

Sunrise jet ski Anasazi Canyon*

The 3rd morning we had Jodi and Vonda join us for a fun adventure through Anasazi canyon. Scotty brought his drone.

Hole in the Rock*

This day we took the pontoon boat to Hole in the Rock. Which is a Historic place where a group of Mormon pioneers traversed through a narrow crack in the canyon rim. 2

I hiked up this far and turned around and got a picture looking at the water. Kristen and Scotty made it all the way to the top.

Sunrise jet ski Face Canyon

The last day Scotty and I got up early and went riding to Face Canyon.

Traveling in another storm*

We had really great weather for most of the trip. We did have big storms on both of our sailing days.

Sailing back the the marina*

After the storm passed we had some great weather and my sisters Kristen and Vonda had a great time on the jet skis.

Overall it was a wonderful week with my family exploring nature and the lake in Southern Utah/ Northern Arizona.

Wow that looks absolutely incredible. Your photographs are spectacular. The house boat looks so cool. That thing looks like a yacht. 👍

Thanks so much. The landscape was really incredible!

Yes, it was quite a nice houseboat. Not sure the difference between a houseboat and yacht. They call them houseboats at Lake Powell.

I don't know if there is a difference either really haha. Very cool though

Hey ya Sara. Thanks for a great photo essay. I'm really glad you got to go with your family and that the experience was good. To be honest, I'm a bit bummed at the water level, but glad you still had places to go to.

Born in Paige? Does that make you paigers? Are you old enough to remember pagers? Sometimes I can't help myself.

Rainbow Bridge is a special place, isn't it?

I tried to take the 'North Shore cutoff' to check the water level in Lake Mead but due to extreme weather the night before decided not to try it. So this is my first real 'eyes on' the river this year. Sigh.

I'm planning a late October/early November trip to the area. A: I like it and B: I need to see for myself the silting above the dam. That ride will take me a ways into Utah, maybe through the Bears Ears...

Thanks Sara. Per normal it's a great report.

Hi @bigtom13 I am glad that we got to go too. There were times when we noticed the water levels and it is sad that it is so low. We moved from Page when I was 3 so I don't remember much of anything. It was fun to hear my old siblings telling stories. Yes, Rainbow Bridge was great. That is one place where the water level made a big difference.

That is great you are going to this area soon. It is such a cool part of our country and world. The landscape and rock formations and other worldly. Have a great time!

A friend of mine was in Moab a couple weeks ago during their storms and he said that there were waterfalls all over the place and it looked so cool. I wish I could have seen it.

Antelope Canyon is amazing, I've never seen a canyon like this before, interesting colours, spectacular shapes, I'm really envious that I live so far away from such wonder.

What an adventure! And you did it in luxury too 🙌

I can't imagine why a 4 hour drive kept you from going to Antelope Canyon for so long 😲

Those storm pictures are incredible :) ...
