L'estate è davvero alle porte.

A breve arriverà il 20 Giugno, il giorno più lungo dell'anno. Ed io ne sono davvero felice. Perchè??? Ma è facile!!! Da allora le giornate cominceranno ad accorciarsi e si andrà verso l'autunno.

Non è la prima volta che lo scrivo: io detesto l'estate, il caldo estremo della città, l'asfalto che si scioglie sotto i tacchi delle scarpe. E quest'anno il caldo si fa sentire già da due settimane.

Così domenica scorsa, siccome mia figlia si è svegliata prestissimo direzione litorale, ho colto l'occasione al balzo per andare al centro, dove si trova il Roseto Comunale, che apre solo in primavera. Un giretto dalle 8:00 alle 11:00, poi via a casa a cercare refrigerio.

Summer is truly just around the corner. June 20th—the longest day of the year—is almost here. And I couldn't be happier. Why??? Well, that’s easy! From that day on, the days will start getting shorter again, and we’ll be heading toward autumn. It’s not the first time I’ve written this: I hate summer. The extreme heat in the city, the asphalt melting under the heels of your shoes. And this year, the heat has already been intense for the past two weeks.

So, last Sunday, since my daughter woke up very early heading straight for the coast, I seized the opportunity and went to the city center, where the Municipal Rose Garden is located, a place that only opens during the spring. Just a little walk from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, and then back home in search of some refreshment.

Il roseto non è grandissimo, sono circa 10.000 metri quadri di passeggiata, ma è considerato uno dei più belli del mondo. Sia per la cornice monumentale di Roma antica, sia per la varietà di rose che si possono incontrare. Ma anche il luogo è considerato un luogo sacro. Infatti il roseto sorge sopra l'antico cimitero ebraico istituito nel XVII secolo. La comunità ebraica lo donò al comune di Roma che lasciò intatti i cipressi secolari a ricordo delle anime dei defunti, i viali furono progettati come il menorah, il candelabro a sette bracci, e all'ingresso ci sono due steli raffiguranti le tavole di Mosè.

The rose garden isn’t very large, about 10,000 square meters of walkable paths, but it’s considered one of the most beautiful in the world. That’s thanks to both the monumental backdrop of ancient Rome and the incredible variety of roses you can encounter there.

But the site is also considered sacred. The rose garden stands on the grounds of the ancient Jewish cemetery, established in the 17th century.

The Jewish community donated the land to the city of Rome, which preserved the centuries-old cypress trees in memory of the souls laid to rest there. The paths were designed in the shape of a menorah, the seven-branched candelabrum, and at the entrance, there are two steles representing the Tablets of Moses.

Il giardino è diviso in due sezioni perfettamente speculari, la prima ospita rose cosiddette botaniche, da quelle più antiche (che ancora non presentano la vertigine dei mille petali costruiti con innesti millenari) a quelle più moderne. La seconda sezione invece ospita rose contemporanee e da tutti i paesi del mondo che partecipano al concorso internazionale Premio Rosa. E lì potete trovare rose davvero particolari, nei colori ma anche nei profumi (alcune sanno addirittura di limone oppure lampone).

The garden is divided into two perfectly symmetrical sections. The first features so-called botanical roses, from the oldest varieties (which still don’t have the dizzying amount of petals created through centuries of grafting) to more modern ones. The second section hosts contemporary roses from around the world, all participating in the international "Premio Rosa" competition. Here, you can find truly unique roses, not only in color but also in fragrance some even smell like lemon or raspberry.

Ed essendo a Roma, non poteva mancare una fontanella con tanto di lupa per abbeverare sia Romolo e Remo che noi turisti per caso gratuitamente. E ovviamente io e mio marito eravamo tra i pochi turisti locali perché credo che mezza Roma fosse già in macchina diretta al mare più vicino armata di costumi da bagno e litri di crema solare (per chi non lo sapesse SPQR è l'acronimo del latino Senatus Populusque Romanus che significa Il Senato e il Popolo Romano qui apposero. Si usava in antichità, e viene ancora apposto su monumenti ed edifici, strade e tombini, dall'attuale amministrazione della città.

And since we’re in Rome, of course, there’s a little public fountain with the Capitoline she-wolf, ready to quench the thirst of both Romulus and Remus — and accidental tourists like us — for free. Naturally, my husband and I were among the very few local tourists, because I’m pretty sure half of Rome was already in their cars, heading to the nearest beach with swimsuits and liters of sunscreen in tow.

(For those who don’t know, SPQR is the Latin acronym for Senatus Populusque Romanus, meaning The Senate and the Roman People. It was used in ancient times and is still engraved today on monuments, buildings, roads, and even manhole covers by the city administration).

Devo ammettere che ero speranzosa. Avrei voluto trovarlo un po' più fiorito, ma avrei dovuto svegliarmi con la primavera e non aspettare l'inizio di giugno. Purtroppo il caldo quest'anno come ho detto è arrivato davvero troppo presto e il giardino era già molto verde.

Ma è stato comunque molto rinfrescante per l'animo passeggiare e soffermarsi a gustare il profumo, così intensamente delicato e di ogni varietà così simile e così diverso delle rose rimaste ritardatarie e sonnecchiose a godersi il sole di Roma.

E così fortunate da godere ogni giorno della sua eternità.

I have to admit, I was hopeful. I had wished to find the garden a bit more in bloom—but I should have woken up with spring, not waited until early June. Unfortunately, as I said, the heat arrived way too early this year, and the garden was already very green.

Still, the walk was incredibly refreshing for the soul. It was lovely to pause and take in the scent—so intensely delicate, each variety so similar yet so different—of the few sleepy, late-blooming roses still enjoying the Roman sunshine.

So lucky, those roses, to enjoy every single day of the city's eternity.
