Chasing Adventure: ATV Ride at Mayon Volcano, Albay

Hey guys! When I think of Albay in the Bicol Region before, one image comes to my mind almost instantly is the perfect cone of Mayon Volcano and now, here I am watching how beautiful this Volcano is. Standing before Mayon, it’s impossible not to feel its magic. The way its perfect cone rises from the earth, crowned with drifting clouds, makes it seem almost otherworldly. Mayon is not just a sight to behold but also a playground for thrill-seekers. While many admire it from a distance, there’s a more exhilarating way to get up close to this iconic wonder: hopping on an ATV and riding through its rugged terrain.

The Call of the Adventure
I’d always dreamed of seeing Mayon Volcano in person. Its flawless cone looks almost unreal, like a mountain sketched by an artist with a ruler in hand. But I didn’t want just another scenic photograph — I wanted to feel the place, breathe its air, and get my heart pumping.

That’s when I discovered the ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) tours in Albay. These tours take riders along trails shaped by past eruptions, across rocky streams, over volcanic ash, and into landscapes that seem frozen in time. The thought of navigating these terrains with Mayon as my backdrop was too thrilling to resist.

Preparing for the Ride
Most ATV adventures begin in Cagsawa, a small town forever linked to Mayon’s history. Before we set off, our guide gave us a quick but thorough briefing. We learned how to handle the ATV, keep balance over uneven ground, and use the throttle without overdoing it. Helmets were strapped on, goggles adjusted, and engines roared to life. Tour operators here offer different trails — short and scenic for beginners, or longer and more technical for adrenaline junkies.

The Thrill of the Trail
From the moment we left the starting point, Mayon dominated the horizon. Its perfect cone seemed to follow us wherever we turned, and there was something almost magical about it — the way it stood so still yet commanded every glance.

The early part of the trail was wide and relatively smooth, letting us get comfortable with the machines. Soon, however, the ground changed — loose stones made the wheels jitter, shallow streams splashed mud on our legs, and short, steep climbs pushed our ATVs to growl with effort.

Every turn brought a new view: rolling fields dotted with carabaos, open stretches of black volcanic ash, and patches of wildflowers defying the harsh ground. The air carried a mix of scents — fresh grass from the fields, warm dust from the trail, and a faint mineral smell from the volcanic soil.

Our guides paused occasionally to share stories about Mayon’s eruptions. They pointed out ridges formed by old lava flows and boulders carried by lahars, explaining how each eruption reshaped the land and the lives around it.

The ride back felt different. Maybe it was the glow of accomplishment, or maybe it was just the afternoon light softening the landscapes. We passed through small villages where children waved and called out greetings. Life here seemed to flow in quiet harmony with the volcano, as if the people had learned to live in step with its moods.

It struck me that Mayon is more than a postcard attraction — it’s a presence that shapes the rhythm of life. Its eruptions have brought both destruction and renewal, and its beauty carries a kind of enchantment that stays with you long after you’ve left.

  • Dress for dust and comfort – Wear light, breathable clothes, but don’t mind if they get dirty.
  • Protect your eyes – Sunglasses or goggles are essential, especially on windy days.
  • Secure your camera or phone – The views will tempt you to take photos, but make sure your gear is safe.
  • Follow your guide’s lead – They know the safest and most scenic paths.
