One Day in Ouro Preto

This past weekend we had a four-day holiday here in Brazil, and I traveled for the first time to the city of Ouro Preto, in Minas Gerais. I want to share a little about this experience while the memories are still fresh in my mind.

It was my first time both in the region and in the city of Ouro Preto, and it’s a place I really wanted to visit, a place I had been longing to see. I was only able to spend one day there because I was actually staying at some friends’ house in a nearby town called Ouro Branco. So we went to Ouro Preto just for one day, to see the main tourist spots and wander through the cobblestone and incredibly steep streets of the city.

So here are some of my impressions: one day in Ouro Preto.

We arrived in Ouro Preto around lunchtime and started by visiting the Church of São Francisco and the soapstone craft fair located right in front of it — one of the main churches in the city.

Actually, I can't even say exactly how many churches there are, because there are so many, especially in the central area, and from almost anywhere you stand, you can see the towers of several of them. I had no idea it would be like that.

Even though I had seen plenty of videos and photos of Ouro Preto throughout my life, none of them do justice to how steep the hills are and how much the city’s elevation varies between its lower and upper parts. I truly had no idea — and it was a surprise to be surrounded by mountains like that. And I found all that out in the best way possible: by walking through the hills.

I also visited the Casa de Gonzaga, where I took some photos in the backyard. The name comes from Tomás Antônio Gonzaga, one of the main poets of colonial Brazil and an important figure in the Inconfidência Mineira. He lived in Ouro Preto (then called Vila Rica), worked as a magistrate there, and was involved in the movement that tried to free Brazil from Portuguese rule. After being arrested, he was exiled to Mozambique, where he spent the rest of his life. Today, the house is a memorial space that helps tell a bit of this history.

We also visited a restaurant that used to be a large house with a slave quarters in the basement. The highlight of the place was that it was located on a very charming hill, with a beautiful view. They had a terrace where you could go up and take photos. That experience really affected me and made me reflect on tourism in places where so much suffering occurred. I think I still need to better process my feelings about it.

And finally, after leaving the restaurant in the late afternoon, we continued walking around the main square, stopped by a June Festival in front of one of the churches, and took a short car ride since it was getting dark and we had already walked a lot that day.

I know that one day isn’t enough to really take in all the beauty, history, and culture of this place, but since that was all the time I had, it’s what I could do.

And I definitely want to go back someday to explore more and discover the details of this city.

Thank you so much! I feel the same, there’s something deeply captivating about the way churches were built, both in structure and symbolism
