Chasing waterfalls and history in the heart of Minas Gerais

During my brief time in Ouro Preto, I had one day to visit some of the waterfalls in the region — and I say some because I don't think I've ever seen a place with so many waterfalls. The state of Minas Gerais is truly impressive, with waterfalls, nature reserves, and mountains in every direction. It was really special to get to know this place that I had only seen in photos before. We were with a local who knows the region well, so they took us to some truly special spots. We actually visited three waterfalls, and I’ll share a bit about each of them in this post.

Durante a minha breve passagem por Ouro Preto, eu tive um dia para conhecer algumas cachoeiras da região e digo algumas porque acho que nunca vi uma região com tantas cachoeiras. O estado de Minas Gerais é realmente surpreendente e para todos os lados tem muitas e muitas cachoeiras e áreas de preservação e montanhas, chapadas e foi muito especial conhecer esse lugar que antes eu só via por fotos. Nós estávamos com uma pessoa que mora ali, já tem família ali e conhece bem a região então nos levou em cachoeiras realmente especiais. Na verdade conhecemos três e eu vou falar um pouco de cada uma delas nesse post.

Itatiaia village and waterfall

The first waterfall we visited is still within the municipality of Ouro Branco and is known as Itatiaia Waterfall, named after a small local village located about 15 minutes from the center of Ouro Branco. It’s a very charming place, facing one of the slopes of the Espinhaço Mountain Range. We stayed there during our trip, and I can say it’s definitely worth it. The village is truly special, with old little houses, a very old church, and a stunning view of the mountain — which is, without a doubt, the most incredible thing about this place.

A primeira cachoeira que visitamos fica ainda dentro do território do município de Ouro Branco e é conhecida como cachoeira do Itatiaia, que é uma vila local que está afastada mais ou menos uns 15 minutos do centro de Ouro Branco. Ela é muito charmosa e fica bem de frente para uma das faces da Serra do Espinhaço. Nós ficamos hospedados ali e eu posso garantir que vale muito a pena. A vila é muito especial, pois tem casinhas antigas, uma igreja bem antiga também e a vista para a montanha, que é o mais incrível deste lugar.

Itatiaia is also part of the Estrada Real, which was the first official route created by the Portuguese crown to extract gold from the interior of Brazil and transport it to the coast and then to Portugal. This network of roads was established during the colonial period and connected mining towns like Ouro Preto and Ouro Branco to the ports of Rio de Janeiro and Paraty. It was along these paths that much of Brazil's wealth was taken — or rather, stolen — during the colonial era, as tons of gold were removed from the region and shipped overseas. Walking through Itatiaia, it is striking to imagine how much history passed through those same trails, now quiet and surrounded by nature.The stone pillars you can see around the area are markers that show where the Estrada Real once passed.

Itatiaia também faz parte da Estrada Real, que foi a primeira rota oficial criada pela coroa portuguesa para extrair o ouro do interior do Brasil e levá-lo até o litoral, e depois para Portugal. Essa rede de caminhos foi estabelecida no período colonial e conectava cidades mineradoras como Ouro Preto e Ouro Branco aos portos do Rio de Janeiro e Paraty. Foi por essas estradas que grande parte da riqueza do Brasil foi levada — ou melhor, roubada — durante a era colonial, com toneladas de ouro sendo extraídas da região e embarcadas para o exterior. Caminhar por Itatiaia faz a gente imaginar quanta história passou por essas trilhas, hoje silenciosas e cercadas pela natureza. Os totens de pedra que podem ser vistos pela região são os marcos de que a Estrada Real passava por ali.

From the house we were staying in, we could see the waterfall — and on this day, we finally went to visit it. We did a short hike that leads to the upper part of the falls, and since it was really cold, it ended up being more of a sightseeing walk than a swim. We didn’t stay long, but I took some photos of that incredible view.

Da casa que a gente estava hospedado, dava para ver a cachoeira e depois nesse dia de passeio fomos até ela. Fizemos uma pequena trilha que chega na parte alta e como estava muito frio, foi só um passeio para conhecer mesmo e não para mergulhar. Ficamos ali pouco tempo e fiz algumas fotos dessa vista incrível.

Next, we visited Falcão Waterfall — and only now I realize that I didn’t take a single photo there, only videos. What I can say is that the trail is relatively long with a significant slope, but still easy enough for most people to do. The water was freezing, and we stayed there for a while. I think I forgot to take photos, possibly hypnotized by the beauty of the place. After that, we went to a third waterfall, Castelinho, and that one was definitely the most stunning. There's a bit of a descent to reach it, but the trail is very easy and well-marked. The waterfall has a beautiful green pool with clear waters — when the sun hits it, it feels truly magical. And the mountain view absolutely stole my heart. I don’t have many photos, but I can say the visit is more than worth it.

Na sequência, visitamos a Cachoeira do Falcão e só agora percebi que não tirei nenhuma foto de lá, apenas gravei vídeos. O que posso dizer é que ela tem uma trilha relativamente longa, com um bom desnível, mas que pode ser considerada fácil para praticamente qualquer pessoa. A água estava muito gelada, e passamos um tempo por ali. Acho que acabei esquecendo de fotografar, talvez hipnotizada pela beleza do lugar. Depois, seguimos para uma terceira cachoeira, a do Castelinho, que com certeza foi a mais incrível do dia. Apesar do desnível para chegar até ela, a trilha é bem fácil, com o caminho bem demarcado. A cachoeira tem um poço maravilhoso, verde, de águas claras. Quando o sol bate ali, é algo realmente especial. E a vista para a montanha me deixou completamente encantada. Tenho poucas fotos, mas posso dizer que o passeio vale muito a pena.

Castelinho Waterfall is located in a village called Chapada, which is also very charming, with old houses that have fully preserved façades and a small church that completes the picturesque setting.

A Cachoeira do Castelinho fica em uma vila chamada Chapada, que também é muito charmosa, cheia de casinhas antigas com fachadas totalmente preservadas e uma igrejinha pequena que completa o cenário.

After an afternoon of adventure, we returned to the village of Itatiaia and were still able to watch the sunset facing the mountains. I hope you enjoyed it, and see you next time.
