Show Me A Photo Contest 106 - Pteradactyls

Hi everyone,

This is my first attempt at a community contest like this. I hope I follow the rules correctly. If not, please forgive me.

So, you're thinking "Pterydactyls? What is this dude smoking?", right? Well, if you've ever seen one of these land in a field, you'd understand the nick name. They are so big that they usually walk instead of fly, especially for short distances.

I've seen them in three US States (Michigan, Florida, Nebraska). Well not these specific birds, but the species at least. And they are revered highly in Japan as well.

Do you know what it is, yet?

This is a neat photo because you can see straight through his top beak nostrils!

This will be my entry, because he's strutting his stuff for his lady, who was also in the field.

That's right, a Sandhill Crane!

This particular family hangs out in my parents' back yard during the winter. They usually have one or two chicks before they leave for the summer to cooler climates.

My parents are a little upset with them, though. They like to attack the screen porch on the house, and make big holes in it. No idea why, though. Maybe they will thank me and score me a prize in this contest for keeping my parents from wringing their necks? One can hope.

Thanks for checking this guy out.

Gorgeous! I know we have cranes over here in the Pacific Northwest but I have yet to see them. We do have our own dinos, though, the Great Blue Herons.

Awesome! I love watching these big birds fly. They are kind of wonky. These pictures were all taken in Florida, where Great Blue Herons are common also. Next time I'm there, I'll see what I can find in the "big blue" category. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hello @shinkurisu this is a beautiful Sand Hill Crane!

Is this in the United States?

Good luck in the contest!

Oh I hope your parents don't wring their necks.

Ask around and see why they might be pecking at the screens.

Are they eating bugs off the screen?

Maybe your parents can cover the screen where they make the wholes and that might help.

Barb :)

Hi Barb, yeah, he's a proud papa, for sure. When he gets the golden streaks of plumage though, it is over the top.

This picture is from Florida, United States.

My parents will leave them alone. I think they just get fussy for the screen being damaged. I don't think they are eating bugs though. I suspect it might be that they see their reflection in the sliding glass door about 3 feet behind the screen.

Oh, wow, thank you so much for the reblog. Might be my first one ever.
Even if I don't win, I got to share with people who like birds, so that is a win anyway!
Cheers!

Nice entry, cranes are lovely birds, we see lots of them in Florida, the blue heron shows up in Upstate NY in the warm months.
Thanks for sharing
