❄️ A Winter Hike Along the Emmentaler Alps

avatar

Last weekend I set out on my first snowshoe tour in this winter season. At least that was the plan. I ended up carrying my snowshoes the whole hike as an extra luggage attached to my backpack. While the weather was fantastic, the snow conditions were such that I could make distance much more effectively with my normal hiking boots.

Since I could progress easier I was able to extend the planned loop by a few kilometers. This allowed me to hike a good piece beyond the terrain which I'm already familiar with from previous tours and thus collect a few new impressions.

I must say I'm quite satisfied with the photographic yield, especially since I took pictures only in a few places. On such a tour taking a photo means to always drop out of the hiking rhythm. It's ramming the poles into the snow (most of time they fall over anyway), taking off gloves, pulling out the phone and reduce breathing like a biathlete before shooting. Not to mention the fogged sun glasses each time after going through this exercise. Nevertheless, I think it was all worth it.

Starting point of my hike was the village Sörenberg, in the south of the Emmentaler Alps. Landmark mountain in that valley is the Brienzer Rothorn. You will get a glimpse of its 2350m high peak in one of the photos below. It is the highest peak in the Swiss canton of Lucerne.

So follow me in the Emmentaler Alps and enjoy the frosty winter sceneries.

soerenberg-16.jpg
Starting in early morning silence. The sun is coming just over the ridge and the sky promises great weather for today.

soerenberg-9.jpg
With temperatures well below zero, the trees keep their white cover even in the sun.

soerenberg-10.jpg

soerenberg-13.jpg
No snow has fallen the last couple of days and so the trail could be walked quite easily.

soerenberg-7.jpg
Can you see the armored creature hiding in the ancient rock. Maybe something for LMACians to reveal.

soerenberg-8.jpg
My favorite shot from this series. Light, shadows, clarity and depth - it's all there.

soerenberg-12.jpg
A massive meteor thunders through the sky, dissipating in a glowing tail. Could be something else, though.

soerenberg-6.jpg
A few clouds are coming up.

A glimpse on the sunlit Rothorn on the left towards the center.

soerenberg-5.jpg
The clouds have now gained the upper hand. What an amazing change of ambience.

The sun became a white dwarf, deprived of all her warming strength.

soerenberg-1.jpg
Back at were I set out. Time for a good, warm lunch.

Thanks for following along and see you back next time 👋.

Holy… fantastic photography. What a view.
I need to dig out my snowshoes this weekend but it’s -40 Celsius here today …
I’m hoping it warms up to -20 c this afternoon.
Hoping to have our mid winter bonfire this weekend. 🇨🇦

A true fairy-tale. Wonderful captures! iPhone 13 seems to be handling high contrast scenarios pretty well...

I always like to edit snow photos without blue. I know it isn't natural, but the photo looks much better. Maybe because it is closer to bnw and the snowy landscape is craving for monochrome :) DAmn I am just thinking about some trip in the snow. Well, we don't have as many as you here, but still some. Have a nice day

Yes, these high contrast sceneries kind of invite to edit in b&w. The ones after the clouds came out almost monochrome already. Thanks for the comment!

What beautiful images, definitely the snowy landscapes are mind blowing! Although I'm not brave enough to brave the cold, I'd love to take a walk like that someday in a place just like that.
I'm glad you've taken up your blog again, Shaka. 👍

What a stunning landscape!! Is extremely beautiful the contrast between the snow and the sky. The photo with the meteor is beautiful but I agree with you, this one is my favorite!!

I think it's hard to find a landscape more beautiful than the one including the Alps. They just seem being perfect any time of the year :)

Thank you for sharing, in the hands of a reliable photographer, the Iphone 13 camera can produce captivating images with high quality.

The snow seemed to have covered some of the grounds, but that didn't seem to have had any effect on the death of the trees that lived on the mountain.

Some people who don't live in a snowy land have an affinity for winter, because they don't know how challenging it is to adapt to this season.

we often like what we haven't felt, and then will complain a lot when we are in a long position in a situation.

God has bestowed gifts on human beings. Some of them may be lucky to live in the tropics and some to live in a dry and hot country, some of them may live in a land of snow, that is life. Humans need to adapt and be grateful to the conditions they get.

I really like the landscape photos that you share.

Yes! Definitely.

We haven't had snow here yet, although I heard a few flakes fell the other day, I didn't see any.

Your pictures remind me of childhood snowstorms in the Hudson River Valley when I was a child. On year we dug tunnels in the backyard because the snow was so deep. We probably could have suffocated, but everything worked out fine. There were never any footprints or trails then, unless we made them. Quiet prevailed and clean, white snow.

(Sorry to go on).

Beautiful pictures.

There were never any footprints or trails then

That's what I like most about snowshoe hiking. You can go in remote areas and walk into the clean and untouched snow. Just some animal tracks here and there. Brings out the archetypal spirit.

So much thing happened during winter, it is a quite place when it comes to the temperature which is below zero.

The winter in this area is nice, such a natural vibe with the mountains. Take care dear!

Sounds like you had a great time on your first snowshoe tour, even though you ended up carrying your snowshoes as extra luggage. Good to know that the weather was fantastic and that you could make distance more effectively with your normal hiking boots.

OMG! That's what I really miss at home! The snow!
When I was a kid we used to play in knee deep snow and freeze in thin soled boots that got soaked in minutes, but we didn't mind! At home we dried off by the hot tiled stove.

Wow, stunning. There is something so stunning about coniferous trees just after a heavy snowfall, it is a sight to behold and something I love to see, though here in Ireland it is a rarity to get that much snow, maybe once every decade or more.
