A Stroll Through Basel

avatar

All the snow has melted away and the weather turned almost spring like in the past few days. The sun demanded to be enjoyed outside and so I set off on a city walk and photo hunt to Basel.

So follow me on a stroll through the Swiss metropolis at the bend of the Rhine:

Starting in front of the town hall, right at the Marktplatz. The city council convenes here to direct the matters of Basel.

On the battlements at the top of the 500 year old building, the coat of arms of the twelve Cantons are displayed with which Basel formed the Confederation at that time. Today, the town hall also harbors the government of the Canton of Basel City

Basel's first address, the Grand Hôtel Les Trois Rois (Hotel of the Three Kings) with its exclusive location at the bank of the Rhine.

The view across the Rhine towards the city district of Kleinhüningen. In the back the two Roche-Towers, Switzerlands tallest buildings. Kleinhüningen is the only Swiss national territory on the right bank of the Rhine. Almost like an enklave surrounded by the big neighbour Germany.

Walking over Basel's oldest bridge, the Mittlere Brücke. Built in the 13th century and Basel's only bridge across the Rhine until the late 19th century.

The Rhine promenade starts to fill up with sun hungry citizens.
One of the traditional Rhine ferries. All the energy for the crossing is provided by the river's current. The ferry is tethered to a steel cable with a roller so that the pressure from the current pushes it into a sideways movement.
This boat has a different drive.

The Wettsteinbrücke and the Basel Minster in the background.

Time for a nice cup of coffee.

Waiting for the ferry to get back to shadow side.

The view back on the sunlit Kaserne Basel.

Here you can see the steel cable to which the ferry is connected.
Towards the last spot of sun on this side of the Rhine.

Thanks for following along and see you back next time 👋

Even though it looks very sunny, it must have been cold. Nevertheless, fantastic weather for an exploration tour of the city.

Yes, ideal exploration weather indeed. In the sun it wasn't too cold since there was only little wind.

Ideally two more weeks with cold temperatures since I still have a couple of snow hikes planned but then I'd be ready for spring too. 😎

Nice photos. Definitely worth the visit. Did the Rhine ever froze over there?

Great question! I was curious to know and checked. A Rhygfrörni (frozen Rhine) as it is called in Swiss dialect, occurred many times already. The last one 50 years ago in 1963.

There is nothing better to accompany a beautiful place than a good cup of coffee.

I agree, except for the few cases when a cold beer is in order :)

The view across Rhine really amazing, I like how it build near the water so that the atmosphere is more interesting. Wow is the boat driving by local, it seems like they are familiar with it.

I also love visiting the old building, thanks for sharing dear, have a nice weekend 😊

I haven´t seen many posts about Basel yet but this one looks really good. The sunny weather made for some very nice background for all the stunning architectural shots :) Lovely city, thanks for showing us around!

Well, Switzerland is nice. I lived and worked there for quite a while and enjoyed it a lot. First Zurich, later Basel. Great cities both of them, but very different. And then there are the mountains.
