Chimneys 📷 All Around

Hello, everyone! 😎

I thought I’d write an introduction for this photo essay, explaining where I was and what I was doing in the places I photographed, but I soon realized it would be too long and have nothing to do with the photos.

So, I drove someone to Rijeka, Croatia, to run some errands, and while I was waiting for him, I wandered around the city. Basically, I walked up and down a long, straight street, about two kilometers, waiting for him to call so I could drive him home.
Well, while I was getting my daily dose of steps in - somewhere between 9,000 and 10,000, since that’s supposedly healthy, I figured I might as well take some photos. It would have been great to stroll along the promenade, the main squares with interesting buildings, or along the coast, but here there was just one boring, straight street, tons of parked cars, and apartment buildings and houses on both sides.

Well, you’ve probably figured out from the title and the photo above that I focused on chimneys :)
Yeah, I just had to decide on something.

Chimneys? Where did I find them? Everywhere. They’re on the roof of every house.

It’s well known that old houses were heated with wood or kerosene, and even gas stoves require a chimney.
Reka is a coastal town, but they get snow and wind there too. It can get pretty cold in the winter, even below 0 °C.

Yeah, the street was really boring; nothing particularly interesting.

Well, let's just say I saw one of the container terminals down on the coast, in the harbor.

And back to the chimneys again

That should be all for today, thanks for your attention!

The chimneys looks much and the houses looks beautiful. But is that hoe heat are much to the extent that chimneys are much on the roof tops of these buildings?

I don’t even know. There are probably multiple apartments in the buildings, and each has its own chimney

There’s something to that, yeah. They’re all old townhouses. I don’t know about modern passive houses, though, if they have any. Probably just ventilation systems.

The street wasn’t boring, you just had to shift your focus, haha. Every now and then I set myself goals like that too, and it makes my photo walks a much more stimulating experience. It’s a shame you couldn’t get right down to the sea, you can just make out a beautiful landscape between some of those chimneys. 😃

I would have gone, but I didn’t have much time—less than an hour. I would have had to walk quite a way down the stairs, to the other street, and then down more stairs to the shore.
There will be another chance. The Kvarner Gulf is one long riviera and promenade; we’ve been walking there since childhood, so we’ll get to it eventually :)

Just reading you go up and down so many stairs I got exhausted. 😂 I hope I don't miss your photos of the Kvarner Gulf.

The city is very hilly, with streets on multiple levels 😎 You can check it out right now—not exactly my posts, but there are quite a few posts about the Kvarner Gulf, mostly older ones. All kinds, from travel to art. Take a look at Worldmappin. Search Rijeka 😎

It’s nice that you know this area. Yes, the former Yugoslavia was an interesting country, in a lot of things, but it didn’t last long—there were too many antagonisms.
