Sunset Shoot At Coldstream Pond

avatar
(Edited)

This evening, I got out for a little backcountry cross-country ski with Martin of MVB Coaching at Donner Lake and a frozen over Coldstream Pond. The sunset was better than expected, and fortunately, I had packed my camera. Okay, I almost always pack my camera when I head outdoors... But I'm glad I did because we ended up with some unexpected very nice photos!

Martin gave me my first cross-country ski lesson last year and I immediately fell in love with the sport. Being able to get out there further and faster with the camera has been great.

These were all shot with the Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens. Handheld photos, a flash was used in order to lighten up Martin and to make sure he wasn't a silhouette. The ISO was 1000, the lens aperture was f/8, and it was 1/200 of a second long exposure.

Yup, I was happy to be out there and happy with the photos I was capturing!

Thanks for looking and I hope you all had a great day too.

It seems to me that you live on the shore of this lake. More precisely, you have already become a part of this lake. You're making the history of this lake in photos!

I live across the street from Donner Lake now, which is about a 10 minute walk from this little pond. Yes, I love the lake and love taking photos of it!

It's a good thing you are learning the interesting sport of skiing, especially this winter period when snow abound. Thanks for sharing some shots of your skiing lesson with us.

Yup! It's a great excuse to get outside and exercise when there is now on the ground.

Hello friend @scottshots , as usual I have a question regarding your shoot. I see you have a flash on your camera. At what distance did you take a photo of it with the flash? The flash was pointed directly at him or slightly offset to another angle. These questions will help me to better use the flash, which I almost never use because it overwrites my photos. Then mine is integrated into the device and I do not have the possibility of orienting it from another angle, thank you in advance for your answer

Happy to answer any questions @cyboule! I was about 8-10 feet away from Martin when I shot these photos. The flash was pointed directly at him. But I did turn down the power of the flash a bit, about 1 stop of light. It was on ETTL, or auto mode with reduced power, instead of manual mode. When I shot the scene at full flash power ETTL, Martin was looking a bit too bright. I often turn down the flash power a bit when I shoot portraits.

The big flash on top of the camera will give a slightly different look compared to the integrated flash. The integrated flash is closer to the lens, the big flash is a little further away and can create a little more of a shadow. It's a subtle difference but can be noticeable if you look carefully.

Hope that helps!

Thank you, I understand better why some of my photos were very flattened. I got into the habit of taking all my images without flash but this limits the volume of pretty shots. Thank you again and sorry to bother you with my questions but for me your answers are valuable and allow me to improve

Well... I started with a black and white Photography-101 class in college, in 1997. I immediately started working at a small mom-and-pop camera store in North Hollywood (Valley Photo Service) where I learned more than I was learning school. Then I started my photography business a year later and have shooting photos ever since.
Thank you!

Sigh... What a sad winter it's been so far. An easy one, but I love the snow and want more of it! We're supposed to get snow later today, but I've also hear that it may rain instead now :(

As a child, I often went skiing with my father on weekends. But now it's not working yet ((

Nice! I took my son skiing almost every Sunday when he was living at home. He's 23 years old now and lives in LA where it does not snow. But I talked to him today and I think he is going to visit soon and go skiing again!
