New Snowy Downtown Truckee Photo

After shooting some friends signing and performing at the Cottonwood Restaurant a couple days ago (post with those photos), I took a walk in Downtown Truckee for some snowy photo fun. We were finally getting a decent snowstorm. It's been a slow year for the snow, there is usually a lot more of it by this time of year.

Mix the nighttime snow with the Christmas lights, and streetlight... and you get a very photogenic scene! There was a homeless guy walking around the area, looking like he was out of his mind and acting strange, so I had to work fast. Just a few quick photos and then I left. I didn't like the way he was looking at me and my somewhat expensive camera. I'll be back for more photos when we get more snow soon. For now, I am happy with this shot!

_Q1A1393.jpg

Shot with a Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens, set at 45mm. The ISO was 2000, the lens aperture was f/4.0, and it was a 1/80 of a second long exposure. Shot handheld with lens image stabilization on. Longer exposures do not work well with scenes like this. If it were a long exposure on a tripod, the snow would look like long white lines instead of little white spots. With a very long exposure, you might not event see the snow at all.

Fingers crossed that I'll be back to this scene soon. We are supposed to get more snow today, but so far it's only been rain. Bring on the colder temps!

Thank you for looking and I hope you are all having a great day.

Ha! Yeah, I'm getting old... Sometimes I miss those film days way back then, but it would have been incredibly difficult to get shots like this. Thanks for the follow!

Your photo is pretty. It's true that it's difficult to take photos of nights against the light with the Christmas lights. Especially the snow that falls sometimes covers the image too much and the focus settles on the foreground of the first flakes.

Glad you like it! Yup, it's a challenging scene but I love the results.

Nowadays we see that people are preparing for this event for a long time and decorating everything in a very beautiful way.

@scottshots
As you describe expensive camera , the photoshoots you make look expensive too. Similarly tree and lighting creating an awesome view. Here is not any view like this in my side. But I enjoy this moment through your post. A nice one.
Send us some snow because here is not snow , we are feeling thirst for snow weather.

Actually... We are a bit behind schedule when it comes to snow. We often have a lot more of it this time of year. It was supposed to snow last night, but it just rained instead. Glad you enjoyed the photo!

Great shot 🎅🎄❄🤶 My first thought when you mentioned the homeless dude was "Man its nice not to be in California sometimes" but there is actually a bit of a homeless problem in Burlington, Vermont. Homeless deserve our concern and a better life but safety concerns are real.

Than you!

I feel for them. It can't be easy up here in the cold. But yeah, that dude gave me a dangerous look that made me very uncomfortable. We've always had a few homeless people here, they used to be friendly even though a bit strange. But the amount of them has increased a lot over the last few years and they have become dangerous. We used to have a "warming room" where they could go to sleep at night. It was recently shut down due to fights and bad behaviors. #fuckfentanyl

Thank you @biyimi! Hopefully I'll get more snowy Downtown Truckee shots before the lights come down... We haven't had a lot of snowstorms this year.
