Frozen Pond Photo

I was feeling like I needed some real exercise this morning. So I grabbed the backcountry cross-country skis and walked over to Donner Memorial State Park for a lap. When I was just about done, I decided that I wasn't tired enough, so I kept on going, up into Coldstream Canyon. It was a mostly uphill ski to one of the unnamed little frozen ponds up there. The pond was looking rather photogenic, so I got the Canon out and took a few photos. This image is not going to be my next best seller, but I like it and I'm glad I brought the camera with me!

Shot handheld with the Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens. The camera's ISO was 400, the lens aperture was f/20, and since it was handheld with no tripod, the shutter speed was a fast 1/200 of a second.

Above is the Strava screenshot of the map and my time. The big lake is Donner Lake, which is across the street from where I live, here in Truckee, California. I love being able to walk out the door and have an adventure like this. It was a good workout, and I'm now tired and feeling content.

Not the most fun adventure I've had, and not the best photo I've taken, but it was still great to get outdoors and do something I love to do!

I hope you all are having a great weekend and were able to do something you love to do too.

We need exercise.
When it's cold outside, I don't want to move and stay inside.
I feel like I need to get some real exercise.
I'm going to eat lunch and take my kids to the public library to check out a book.
Have a great day. 👍

Nice! I hope it was a good trip to the library. Yes, I might try to get out again for more exercise today...

Since the pond is frozen
It is possible for you to walk on it
Right?
Nice pictures too

Well... Yes, but the ice is fairly thin on this lake so it would be risky. I did not go out on the ice. The ice is much thicker on lakes that are higher elevation around here. Those lakes are safe for walking on.

Those are some nice shots you've taken of the frozen lake. You captured the icy white beauty of the lake really well, and I enjoyed viewing them. Thanks for sharing and have a great week.

Clicks are captivating 😍 Yes exercising is good habit. It’s good to set out and amble with nature. Nature fills your inner soul . You explore many aspects of nature when you trudge with it alone.

Yes weekend went well but not enthusiastic like you as you marched on some hills but sluggish as I passed it on bed

Awesome picture! for landscape photography, would you rather have canon or sony? This year I want to focus on it and wondering which one is more fitting for that. Maybe it's just me but different brands have some sort of "look" to it. Like to me, fuji is more fitting for anything urban and portraits of people rather than landscape photography. What do you think?

Thank you @macchiata! I am a Canon user. However, if I had to buy a new system today, I would probably go with Sony. Canon is supposed to come out with the Canon R5 MK II soon (it has not ben announced yet). When it is released, it will probably be better than the Sony and I will want that camera. Really, it's hard to go wrong with any brand these days, as long as you get one of their best models. Canons and Nikons tend to be a bit tougher of a camera and may be better suited for rough weather conditions when shooting landscape. Sony tends to be a bit lighter weight and may be better if you are going to be doing a lot of hiking. Any photo shot in RAW format can be easily worked on in Photoshop, Lightroom, or other programs and the look can be easily adjusted to what you like.
I hope that helps!

Thanks for getting back to me and sharing that. I am a Sony user and somehow I want to venture out a bit and wondering what are the options are since my focus is landscape too. I 'll be checking out on Nikon. I used to work with Canons and they're terrific but again, looking for new stuff, seems like Nikon is the option now.

Skiing on frozen lakes is so difficult. I think it is possible on those surfaces where the ice is almost 2 inches thick. BTW nice snaps of these beautiful landscapes. and weather is also snowy. its
really awesome.

Sketchy too. 2 inches seems a bit thin, but maybe. I'd stay off this little lake for now. However, there is a frozen over higher elevation lake that I want to ski on soon...
Thank you!
