Backyard Abstract Photos

Today's sunlight and blue sky showed up a little earlier than forecasted. It snowed last night, so as soon as the sun popped out I rushed to grab the camera and drove off for a little adventure. Unfortunately, that adventure turned out to be traffic and crowds...

I headed out to Donner Lake but the main road in town was backed up bad and barely moving so I turned around and headed up to a trailhead at the top of my neighborhood. Fail again! The little parking lot was full so I turned around and tried to find some other trailheads. They were all packed with no parking... Parking is a challenge up here in the winter because it is illegal to park on the sides of the roads, you will block snow removal equipment and snow plows. So I headed back home feeling frustrated. I was also still feeling the creative bug so I decided to have some backyard abstract photography fun and not fight the crowds.

These were all shot handheld with the Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens. The ISO was 50, the aperture was f/22, and the exposure times varied but were all somewhat long exposures, around a half a second to a second long. ICM or intentional camera movement was used in order to achieve the smeared light and color look.

These will soon be on my website, available as large fine art prints, printed by me personally. Abstract photography is certainly not for everybody, but every once in a while I really enjoy the freedom and creative feelings that these type of images provide me. And every once in a while I encounter a buyer who also appreciates abstract work as well.

Here's a quick regular phone photo of my backyard and Quill dog. He was my shooting partner on this not so adventurous photography adventure...

The first photos, in a way, have depth, because looking at them feels like you're inside a tunnel, spinning dizzyingly. Good job, my friend.

At least Quill got to ride around in the car 😂 The abstracts are interesting. Cool to see some ICM most of what you see these days is done with digital editing.

Glad you like those! Many many photos were shot and only a few keepers. Cheers!
