Abandoned Train Tunnels Above Donner Lake
I recently got out for a little hike above Donner Lake, part of that hike was through the old abandoned train tunnels up above Donner Lake and Truckee, California. There were a bunch of icicles in the tunnels, it was "cool" to see. But it was also a little scary since I didn't have a helmet on and if one of them fell on you, it would hurt pretty bad...
Of course I took a few photos of the tunnels. These two were my favorites. But I couldn't decide which one I like better. A (more snow), or B (less snow)? I kind of feel A is a bit more "attention grabbing" so I went with it as my cover photo. But B is a bit more artsy/abstract and I think it might look better as a big print. Which is your favorite?
A.
Shot with the Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens. ISO 800, 1/200 second exposure, and a lens aperture of f/7.1
B.
Also shot with the Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens. ISO 6400, 1/200 second exposure, and a lens aperture of f/4.0. Shot handheld, but I was wishing I had brought the tripod for this one.
While hiking through the tunnels, I ran into this guy who was kind enough to let me take a few photos of him. He is an ice climber and was practicing in the tunnel where the ice was nice and cold. He informed me that the ice around town was currently too fragile and dangerous, it was much safer in the tunnel. It was interesting to see!
Eventually, I made it to an area where I could pop out of the tunnel and get a nice view of Donner Lake. Admittedly, the lake scene was not the most photogenic at that moment, so only a selfie was shot.
It was a fun hike! My ankle has been hurting lately due to a running accident. Fortunately, it is healing up nicely and this hike wasn't that bad. I should be getting out with the camera a lot more, soon...
Thank you for looking and I hope you all had a great and adventurous weekend!

I like shot A better. Sounds like a fun hike. Old railroad tunnels are cool.
Thanks @steven-patrick! I really like hiking it in the heat of summer. Nice and cool in there...
Whenever it snows, the weather becomes so beautiful and when we go to places like this, it feels like we've entered heaven and it's so relaxing.
Indeed! I love this time of year.

The tunnel looks beautiful and exotic, you take amazing photos
Thank you! It's a great place for a hike.
It must have really been abandoned for ages
The pictures looks amazing though
Quite a few years now. They rerouted the train to go through a safer part of the mountain.
The tunnel is looking so dark
The pictures are lovely though
Thanks for sharing
A headlamp is a must in there... Glad you like them!

I've been at it for over 25 years now. Getting old, but finally getting good ;)
You are a very brave men you cross the tunnel wothout hesitation🤗Greetings, keep safe on your next walk..
Thanks @john0928! It can be a bit scary in there, but that's what makes it fun!
😃
Okay now I’m jealous that we do not experience snow in Ghana.
These pictures are so great.
We are lucky to get snow up here. But there are plenty of folks who live just an hour down the mountain that will never make the drive up here to see these sights. Glad you like the photos!
I would be too scared to go in there. I have seen too many horror movies.
HA! Understandable, but the scariest thing in there is the occasional tagger. And they really aren't that scary.
@scottshots California is beautiful. My favorite is the last one with the snowy landscape and the lakes in the background. The entrance to the tunnel is also interesting, it’s a bit like an entrance to a fantastic medieval film.
It does feel like there is a magical world in there, just past the entrance. It's a cool spot!
Yes a portal that takes us to another world lol
