Discovering the hidden beaches of northern Spain (Costa Brava)

We have just returned from three days in the Costa Brava, a two hour drive from our home in France.

This impromptu holiday was motivated entirely by @thecogent who has been touring Europe and felt like some beach time before returning to France with us in order to rent for a few months and find a better consistency with his writing. Sabrina knows the Costa Brava (along with some amazing hidden beaches) so this seemed a good place to meet him for a few days of down time.

IMG_6212.jpeg

As always it was wonderful having him with us. His conversation is stimulating and his energy high, always ready to play with the children.

IMG_6142.jpeg

The first beach we went to was this one. Roses Beach.

IMG_6150.jpeg

Loved walking in the sand alongside these bird footprints.

IMG_6153.jpeg

Here is Esteban shouting at the sea with excitement.

IMG_6159.jpeg

And here is my family enjoying the warm Mediterranean water.

IMG_6186.jpeg

After a little swim Sabrina & I chilled on our beach towels watching the kids play.

IMG_6171.jpeg

There were super happy to be there.

IMG_6176.jpeg

And it didn't take long for the two of them to get stuck in building something together.

IMG_6168.jpeg

Love how industrious they are when the tide is coming in ;)

IMG_6180.jpeg

The following day we ventured further up the coast, past the mountain dotted with white holiday apartments. I was able to snap this one from the car to give you an idea of how it looked from the road.

IMG_6226.jpeg

A bit crowded for our taste, so we continued up the coast to the next one.

IMG_6227.jpeg

Pretty amazing right?

IMG_6230.jpeg

Even better when you find yourself with a cold beer in your hands ;)

IMG_6232.jpeg

Sitting here on my own for a few moments watching the world go by I felt as if I was very far from home. Certainly further than a two hour drive! And it felt gooooood :)

IMG_6234.jpeg

The children returned from their swim...

IMG_6251.jpeg

...and I noticed they both had their goggles on up-side-down ;)

IMG_6253.jpeg

We ate pretty much every single meal at a restaurant. Not a bad life really, though I can see how one's health would deteriorate quickly if they kept this up for long. Decent vegetarian options were hard to find.

IMG_6246.jpeg

Another swim after lunch to cool down again.

IMG_6258.jpeg

As you can see this beach isn't too crowded. Most people go to the more famous Roses beach and are not even aware of these more private beaches just a few minutes drive away.

IMG_6263.jpeg

On our way back to the car we checked out a building in which Sabrina used to live. Its pool seen here, overlooking the ocean.

IMG_6267.jpeg

Here's us at another beachside restaurant in the evening!

IMG_6270.jpeg

On the third day the clouds rolled in from the mountains and even gave us a little rain.

IMG_6281.jpeg

But that didn't stop us from going for a walk!

IMG_6287.jpeg

Sorry Luna, no pedalo today.

IMG_6290.jpeg

Up around the coast we walked in search of more amazing beaches.

IMG_6299.jpeg

Esteban & Luna are still pretty resistant to being barefoot all the time like me, so it is always an enjoyable moment when I see them making the decision for themselves.

IMG_6301.jpeg

We found some amazing looking spots in the end.

IMG_6312.jpeg

Like this one called Pirate Beach (El Pirata)

IMG_6321.jpeg

Complete with beach bar and its own private jetty.

IMG_6318.jpeg

The awesome secluded privacy of this beach was more visible from this side.

IMG_6327.jpeg

The children wanted one last swim before we left. This time with googles on the right way round!

IMG_6331.jpeg

One last restaurant meal before departure.

IMG_6333.jpeg

And one last opportunity to fill the belly with naughty stuff ;)

IMG_6334.jpeg

The children are actually back at school today so the house is silent again and @thecogent & I are busy writing in my courtyard :)

In fact, looks like he has already found the place he wants to live. A village in the mountains not too far from us. So this is great!

All in all our little holiday in the Costa Brava was time well spent and a much needed break for all of us. The south of France is a pretty cool place to live but the north of Spain might actually be a little bit cooler. And you can be sure we will be going again in the near future.

Love & Light everyone 🌱

You were in Spain! Still quite far from me though.
I love watching my girls enjoy the sea, they are all pretty vocal when they get excited, like me, so we do make a bit of noise, but good noise.
Great you had a wee holiday, be great to get you further down this way one time xxxx

It felt pretty weird at first going on an actual holiday dedicated to nothing but relaxing. First time we've done that in years! I had almost forgotten how one relaxes. Much easier now that I am back to fall into my routine of 5am mornings & endless jobs! Still, now that I know it is there, something tells me it won't be long before we return. @thecogent fell in love with the place too ;)

The sea has a louder roar than most children so only in this situation do they have the opportunity to be as loud as they like without disturbing anyone! I probably should have joined them and had a good old scream. Yep, children know best x

Very nice Sam. Handy having the Costa Brava just 2 hrs away. How pricey is the property around there?

How pricey is the property around there?

I didn't see any prices but I am fairly sure these kind of beach front properties are extremely expensive. It certainly wasn't easy finding something affordable to rent. @thecogent shared an apartment with my family in the end which helped a lot. The further you go from the sea the cheaper they get.

There was however a large free parking area for motorhomes around 2K from the main beach so if you happen to have one, this would greatly reduce the cost of this kind of holiday! Here in France there are zero places left where you can stay for free in a motorhome.

It was a village with protective wall around it. Something quite common around here in fact! But no doubt their village has plenty of places for the people to grow their food ;)
