Discovering the hidden beaches of northern Spain (Costa Brava)

We have just returned from three days in the Costa Brava, a two hour drive from our home in France.

This impromptu holiday was motivated entirely by @thecogent who has been touring Europe and felt like some beach time before returning to France with us in order to rent for a few months and find a better consistency with his writing. Sabrina knows the Costa Brava (along with some amazing hidden beaches) so this seemed a good place to meet him for a few days of down time.

As always it was wonderful having him with us. His conversation is stimulating and his energy high, always ready to play with the children.

The first beach we went to was this one. Roses Beach.

After a little swim Sabrina & I chilled on our beach towels watching the kids play.

There were super happy to be there.

And it didn't take long for the two of them to get stuck in building something together.

The following day we ventured further up the coast, past the mountain dotted with white holiday apartments. I was able to snap this one from the car to give you an idea of how it looked from the road.

A bit crowded for our taste, so we continued up the coast to the next one.

Even better when you find yourself with a cold beer in your hands ;)

Sitting here on my own for a few moments watching the world go by I felt as if I was very far from home. Certainly further than a two hour drive! And it felt gooooood :)

The children returned from their swim...

...and I noticed they both had their goggles on up-side-down ;)

We ate pretty much every single meal at a restaurant. Not a bad life really, though I can see how one's health would deteriorate quickly if they kept this up for long. Decent vegetarian options were hard to find.

As you can see this beach isn't too crowded. Most people go to the more famous Roses beach and are not even aware of these more private beaches just a few minutes drive away.

On our way back to the car we checked out a building in which Sabrina used to live. Its pool seen here, overlooking the ocean.

On the third day the clouds rolled in from the mountains and even gave us a little rain.

But that didn't stop us from going for a walk!

Sorry Luna, no pedalo today.

Up around the coast we walked in search of more amazing beaches.

Esteban & Luna are still pretty resistant to being barefoot all the time like me, so it is always an enjoyable moment when I see them making the decision for themselves.

We found some amazing looking spots in the end.

Like this one called Pirate Beach (El Pirata)

Complete with beach bar and its own private jetty.

The awesome secluded privacy of this beach was more visible from this side.

The children wanted one last swim before we left. This time with googles on the right way round!

The children are actually back at school today so the house is silent again and @thecogent & I are busy writing in my courtyard :)

In fact, looks like he has already found the place he wants to live. A village in the mountains not too far from us. So this is great!

All in all our little holiday in the Costa Brava was time well spent and a much needed break for all of us. The south of France is a pretty cool place to live but the north of Spain might actually be a little bit cooler. And you can be sure we will be going again in the near future.
